A local group of women who think there has to be a way to a better world are taking their cause public on Saturday.

Resonate Kootenay, a regional off-shoot of BraveHeart Women, will be participating in a quest to set a world record for the largest hug exchange at the Creston Valley Fall Fair at 10 a.m.

“Hugs for Harmony” is a way to bring awareness to the power of oxytocin, said to be the love and harmony hormone,” said local organizer Debby Johnson.

Following the hug event, members and supporters are asked to join in a dance-walk, a fun and inspiring way of moving around any community.

“We will be heading downtown, fol-lowing a chalked route, and then return-ing to the community complex,” Johnson said.

The dance-walk was created as a fundraiser to help send Kendra Lee, a local massage therapist and BraveHeart Women facilitator, to a peace event in Jerusalem.

After nearly three decades, the Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) ban-quet is a fall tradition, and tickets are now on sale for the 28th, which will be held Oct. 13 at the Creston and District Community Complex.

The popular fundraiser hosted by the Creston chapter will follow the same format as previous banquets — cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, then dinner followed by live and silent auctions — but the impact is even more visible, now that DUC is slated to take control of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA).

“Under the new agreement between the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Act is slated to be rescinded and management of our wild-life area will be restructured,” said Creston DUC spokesperson Lou Knafla. “The creation of the new management structure for the wildlife area will also involve input from our community.”

The third annual Brandon Salviulo

Memorial Fundraiser is set for Sept. 7-9 in Riondel.

This fundraiser is building a scholarship for the firefighter cer-tificate program at the College of the Rockies, in honour of Brandon Salviulo, who died in an ATV accident in 2009. The scholarship is $1,000 to be given each year to a student that meets the require-ments and is a resident of the Kootenay region between the ages of 20 and 25 who has shown to be an active volunteer in their com-munity. The worthy student will be chosen by the college.

Once again, there are some great prizes and surprises donated from Kootenay busi-nesses and from friends both near and far. The weekend is a family style sports weekend that includes mixed slo-pitch, a two-person best ball golf tournament, four-on-four street hockey, a silent auction, a super-vised kids play area,

and, for adults only, two evenings of prize bingo and a prize poker tournament.

And there will be plenty of food, with a pancake breakfast Saturday and Sunday at Bob’s Bar and Grill and a hamburger/hot-dog stand at the ball-field on Saturday and Sunday.

Donations are wel-come at the Nelson and District Credit Union’s East Shore branch.

For more informa-tion about the week-end, call 250-225-3252 or 250-777-2259. For information about the firefighter certificate training program, visit www.cotr.bc.ca.

Do you have an interest in proper-

ty assessment issues, serving on a Property Assessment Review Panel could be for you.

“If serving your local community and its citizens is impor-tant to you, you may want to sit on a prop-

erty assessment review panel,” said Property Assessment Review Panel admin-istrator Steve Feldman. “At this time, we are seeking panel mem-bers in the Creston area.”

Property assess-ment review panels investigate and deliver rulings on complaints regarding the assessed value, classification and exemptions assigned to properties by BC Assessment. Panel members serve on a part-time basis and must be available to attend hearings scheduled during the annual assessment review period from Feb. 1-March 15. Positions are paid and initial appointments are typically for a two-year period.

Training materials are provided upon appointment to the three-member panels.

To learn more about joining a Property Assessment Review Panel, visit www.cscd.gov.bc.ca/parp/index.htm or call 1 800-663-7867.

EAST KOOTENAYFOUNDATION FOR HEALTH

The East Kootenay Foundation for Health recently received a donation of $643 from Debbie Graham, event co-ordinator of the Pink Garden Tea, for the A Clear View digital mammography campaign.

Graham has been organizing the event over the past three years to help support breast can-cer patients living in the Creston area. This year, she and her committee decided to expand the

event to two days, and to direct their funds to A Clear View.

Her home garden was transformed into a wel-come retreat for tea lovers and featured an array of teas from New York, crepes and fruit skewers, plus a chance to shop at the tea market boutique for a variety of items such as teas, books, angels and hand creams.

Also showing their support were a quilt presentation by cancer survivor Carmen Lancaster, sales of a special edition water-colour teacup giclée by Creston artist Laura Leeder, and book signing and sales by author Valerie Comer.

For more information on A Clear View, visit www.ekfh.ca.

Railcar sandwiches. Boxcar scones. Choo-choo desserts.

If you’re sensing a theme, you’re correct, and if you want a sample, you must be aboard when the train leaves the Cherrybrook Farms station on Sept. 15 at 1400 hours (2 p.m., of course).

“I love tea and Gord loves trains,” said Caroline Martin, who owns the Erickson orchard/candy shop with her husband, Gordon. “So we put the two together.”

Debbie Graham, who has hosted the annual Pink Garden Tea since 2010, fundraising and promoting awareness of breast

cancer, will join Martin, offering a special blend by New York’s Harney and Sons, containing “Earl Grey tea, plus black teas, lemony bergamot and grape-fruit essences,” according to the company’s website.

“We’re going to be serving Diamond Jubilee, which is the Queen’s favourite tea,” Graham said.

The train-themed high tea is planned to be the first in a series.

“This is the start of a jour-ney,” said Martin. “This is the initial train station, then we make stops around the world.”

Future teas will eventually transport guests to Holland, Japan, France and Poland to celebrate those countries’ tea traditions.

Teatime has been a part of Martin’s life since she was a child, when she enjoyed tea with her mother at a Lake Louise teahouse, the Banff Springs Hotel and Calgary Public Library.

She hopes that guests will appreciate the atmosphere of the shop’s back deck while they socialize — something a lot of customers have been looking forward to.

“Everyone asks what we’re doing on the deck,” said Martin. “To have people out here for tea will be quite nice.”

Admission to the tea, which is limited to 20 seats, is $15. To make reservations, call 250-428-3070.

The Prince Charles Theatre will be filled with the sound of Latin America when the Creston Rotary Club presents Singing for Honduras. The followup to last year’s concert will run at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14, raising funds to buy edu-cational supplies for Honduran children.

“These children are from rural settings,” said Singing for Honduras director Marlene Nash. “They have very limited access to education. A lot are working in fields and are from very poor families.”

The lineup for the concert is extensive, with performances by John Herbaut, the Creston Community Band, the Velle Weitman Trio, and the trio of Tiesja, Larry and Dixie, along with Zavallennahh Huscroft, Monte Anderson, Peter Bodley, Eddie Owl and Latin dancer Melissa Calderon. (Anyone interested in participating in the Latin dance portion can call Calderon at 250-428-3493.)

Nash, who once owned a popu-lar ice cream shop on 11th Avenue North, will also sing, having returned to Creston this summer after a six-year absence. She guar-antees it will be a fun night not to be forgotten.

“We have put together a very unusual show this year,” she said. “I have a surprise ending no one will expect.”

Tickets for Singing for Honduras are $15 in advance at Black Bear Books and $20 at the door.

From page 1The change may not hap-

pen until after next year’s provincial election, but in the meantime, DUC will be investing $600,000 on major upgrades to existing water control structures and upgrad-ing the dikes starting this month. The aspects that require upgrades will be high-lighted at the banquet in a 15-minute slide presentation by CVWMA biologist Marc-André Beaucher.

“A lot of the equipment is so old,” said Knafla. “They do little fixes here and there. Some major channels need to be redredged, and some pum-phouses need to be rebuilt.”

And even though the CVWMA is a Ramsar-designated wetland of interna-tional importance, “it hasn’t had the quality of other Ramsar sites,” said Knafla. “As it pro-gresses, we’ll have something to really show off.”

Those projects will be helped out by the funds raised at the banquet, which has an extra event added last year, a high-flyer challenge. This year, there will be 13 auctions on 13 two-piece pre-mier luggage sets. Each win-ner will then be eliminated until one is left, and chooses a trip to one of five locales, including New York/Broadway, Cape Canaveral and Napa Valley. For those not actually taking part, “it’s as much fun to watch,” Knafla said.

Beyond that, there is the tasty buffet with three meats, salads and desserts whipped up by caterer Carol Huscroft, that follows the cocktail hour that allows up to 236 guests to socialize — one of the most anticipated parts of the eve-ning.

“There’s a lot of chatter that goes on in that hour,” said Knafla.

Tickets for the banquet are $40, available at Mawson’s Sports or from committee chair Gertie Brown. An early bird draw will be held Sept. 15, and the winner will receive a print of a red fox coming out of its lair by Denis Mayer.

From page 1“A meeting of 99 women will include 33

Western women and 33 women each from Israel and Palestine,” Johnson said. “It will bring women of the different cultures together and they can then go back to their countries and communities and promote the need for peace.”

Donations are being collected locally to help fund Lee’s participation and the organization of

the groundbreaking event.“It is an honour to support these women in

their process of release and transformation,” said Lee. “I feel called to be part of this kind of global change. I had no idea that I would ever do something like this. These contribu-tions not only support me in this calling but also these women. This shift will set a tone of harmony between their nations. I am so very grateful we live where I can make this choice.”

Josh Hepditch is the new head coach and general manger of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, and the recent arrival couldn’t be hap-pier with his new home.

“I’m blown away. It’s an extremely friend-ly, supportive town from what I’ve seen so far,” he said, adding that he and his wife, Kathryn, were invited to spend their first night in town at her employers’ home, even though the Creston PhysioWorks and More owners hadn’t met the couple.

The 27-year-old New Brunswick native recently arrived in Creston, although he’s been researching and recruiting since the team hired him in mid-June, even helping out at a Merritt training camp with 2007-2011 Thunder Cats coach Joe Martin.

He started playing hockey as a child, fol-lowing in his older brother’s footsteps.

“I just did the same thing every other kid did,” he said. “As the years went on, the dream got bigger, and I tried to take it as far as it would go.”

Hepditch played minor hockey in Fredericton, N.B., until he was 17, when he joined the Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. After that, he spent five years on the University of New Brunswick team before joining the Central Hockey League’s Allen Americans in Texas.

Through it all, he proved himself to be versatile, playing both forward and defence.

“That was something that helped me get through my career,” he said.

Thunder Cats hire new head coachAs early as age 20, Hepditch

knew he wanted to be a coach but still had a passion for playing. He spent the following years learning what he could from the excellent

coaches on the Moncton and UNB teams — the UNB coaches led the team to the finals four times dur-ing Hepditch’s time on it, and

Moncton coaches Ted Nolan, Danny Flynn and Daniel Lacroix went on to coach the New York Islanders.

The first test of Hepditch’s skills came on the weekend, when the Thunder Cats training camp was held at the John Bucyk Arena from Aug. 30-Sept. 2, with about 30 hope-fuls slated to attend. That was to be followed by an exhibition game against the Glacier Nationals — a Montana team in the Northern Pacific Hockey League holding its training camp in Fernie — on Sept. 4 in Creston, and away exhibition games against the Kimberley Dynamiters (Sept. 7), the Columbia Valley Rockies (Sept. 8) and the Fernie Ghostriders (Sept. 9). The Thunder Cats will host the Beaver Valley Nitehawks for an exhibition game on Sept. 11.

Having just finished playing hockey, Hepditch is sure his unique point of view will be an asset to the local Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team.

“I’m just out of the game, so I see a lot of it from a player’s perspec-tive,” he said. “A lot of players don’t agree with what the coach is doing, and now that I’m in the coach’s seat, I can see why.”

I’m a lucky guy. Part of my job involves getting out and about and talking to a huge range of interesting people who are more often than not doing interesting things. But few of those experiences have left a stronger mark on me than an afternoon I spent recent-ly while I was working on a Meet Your Maker story about young farmers Joel and Jen Comer.

Joel was kind enough to take time out to drive me out to a couple of Lister sites where some of their hives (which they own in partnership with his parents) are situated. Wanting to get some good photos, I pushed my queasiness as far down as I could, donned a white jumpsuit with attached screen mask, jammed my bare hands deep into my pockets and accompanied Joel as he approached a group of wood boxes, each of which is home to tens of thousands of bees.

Now, it’s hardly a secret that bees are fascinating creatures. And it didn’t surprise me at all when, a week earlier, Jen told me that she and her husband had “fallen in love” with them. I’ve known Lew Truscott, who has spent more than half of his long life raising bees and reaping honey, for a long time and his enthusiasm is contagious.

Over the years I’ve come to admire farmers for the multitude of skills they need to survive. Now, I am coming to understand that bee-keeping is a specialty of an entirely different magnitude, and it’s hard to overestimate their importance to our planet.

Since my photo session with Joel I’ve read a couple of books on the subject, watched a documentary film and even re-watched Ulee’s Gold, a

wonderful movie starring Peter Fonda that was made 15 years ago, earning him a well-deserved Oscar nomination. I’ve been thinking and even dreaming about bees.

In the documentary I watched, one of the beekeepers interviewed described honeybees as modern day canaries in coalmines. Canaries were once kept in coalmines because they would stop singing when the air in mineshafts became impure. It was a sign for miners to get out while they still could. Bee health, the keeper argued, is a similar harbinger. When colonies began to mysteriously dis-appear, or “collapse”, about a decade ago many took it as a dire sign of what was happening in our environment.

While the collapse hasn’t turned out to be the worldwide catastro-phe some predicted, it has helped focus attention on some of the dumber things we do as a species. The American obsession with mono-crops might be the single best illustration. For many years a highly subsidized agriculture industry has been encouraged to produce corn and soy, high protein crops that have the added “advan-tage” of helping to supplement fossil fuels. Crops are no longer rotated, the land has little opportu-nity to rest and rejuvenate and innovations like genetic modifica-tions have resulted in vast tracts of

land being treated more like labo-ratories than farms. These parcels end up being liabilities, not assets, to the environment.

In California, which has long been treated as a giant, albeit artificial, oasis instead of the desert it real-ly is, an enormous move has been made to produce almonds. Hundreds of square miles of trees, and only trees, have been plant-ed, so many that more than half of the entire country’s bee population is required to pollinate the flowers in a

three-week growing period. Beekeepers are paid to haul their hives from as far away as Florida on flatbed trailers, place them in the orchards, then remove them when the flowering is over. The bees can’t be kept there any longer — there are no other food sources for them in the almond orchards.

I don’t think you have to be a pot-smoking, burnout leftie to con-clude that this practice can’t be healthy in any way except the pro-duction of a valuable nut. It’s yet another mono-crop that reduces the planet’s biodiversity and pushes bees into the industrial stratosphere, where they become vulnerable to all sorts of dangers.

When colony collapse threw its first scare into beekeepers, farmers and scientists alike, an observation by Albert Einstein was commonly cited. Without bees, Einstein had predicted, humankind could die out in four years.

Whether or not he was right, the prospect that one of Earth’s most important — and fascinating — spe-cies is at risk is as depressing as it is frightening.

Is it just me or am I getting more miserable as I get older? I was won-dering that the other day as we embarked on the journey of research-ing a replacement vehicle for the current one where the engine decided it was time to shuf-fle off this mortal coil. Having spent time in a pre-vious life as a purchaser, I tend to over-research every-thing we buy until we are absolutely certain we have obtained the best value. Turns out the majority of people in our age demo-graphic are quite similar — most of us had grown up in an era where you didn’t have everything you wanted, work hard for your present paycheque and want the best value you can find. Some of us even post-purchase shop to get that glow of gratification in knowing we got a really sweet deal on that thin-gamabob we bought.

So, engaging a young salesman (generation Y, maybe generation X, certainly not baby boomer material) with a list of questions, I found responses that were incomplete or ignored the question with the con-stant push to make a decision. While I realize that style probably works with his generation, it really

highlighted the differences in deal-ing with age ranges and what I have come to interpret as good ser-vice. My terse replies and contin-ued requests for more information

obviously equally frustrated him as I was handed off to a gentleman close to my age and a more equali-ty-based conversation ensued. While having experienced similar situations in stores and restaurants, I do want to qualify that not all younger generations can be tarred with the same brush, just as all baby boomers in service industries don’t radiate sunshine and fill you with cheer.

You don’t have to look farther than our front counter to see a sam-pling of all the generational species along with the quirks and foibles that accompany them in their travels to and from the complex. Equally so,

our front end staff covers a wide age range, as well, and with it, the ability to identify and deal with our guests on an individual, age related basis. In providing Leisure services and recre-

ational or educational oppor-tunities, we have what I con-sider a distinct advantage over other service based pro-viders in that 99 per cent of the people coming here want to be here and have a corre-sponding attitude as com-pared to, say, renewing insur-ance, getting a medical exam or reviewing your mutual fund performance. Unlike

many of those industries, we also provide customer comment cards for you that we actually read and strive to respond to.

Being attuned to what represents good customer service is something I have always done, whether it is ordering a hamburger or buying a car. The successful service providers are the ones that leave you feeling you just received personalized attention and that they truly wanted you to be happy with your experi-ence. That credo spans all age demo-graphics.

It has been a hectic summer for everyone at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre.

We have just said goodbye to our two student councillors, Jayme and Caitlyn. They were a great help during a busy summer tourist season. Best of luck to them in their studies!

There were some interesting occurrences this summer. We actually had more visitors this year than the same period last summer, bucking the trend in many parts of B.C. Curiously, the rainy month of June saw us double our Visitor Centre numbers. We have also seen an unusually high num-ber of tourists from far reaching parts of the United States — Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas, Vermont, Massachusetts, Florida and Texas. Part of the credit for that must go to the International Selkirk Loop. Those folks are doing a terrific job promoting the entire area and especially the top 10 scenic drives in North America.

A great addition this year was the summer art show put on by Artistic Visions as our entry in Artwalk. The amount of talent on display was amaz-

ing. The show was a welcome extra reason to stay in the Visitor Centre a while longer, which gives more time to learn about other local attractions. Of course, giving tourists reasons to

stay in the valley longer is one of our main goals!

We also helped several people interested in moving to the area, including a few that are interested in setting up, or in the process of setting up, new businesses. Very exciting stuff!

A lot of work is going into the brand-ing project. Info gathering, fact check-ing, design ideas and more are all a part of the plan for how we can better tell our story and help attract even more visitors to our valley.

Meanwhile, we are busy getting

ready for the fall, Christmas and even next year!

Small business week is mid-October. We are busy planning an event in the middle of the week, including organiz-

ing a sequel to “Common Ground”, which took place in 2010. Not too far after that is the Santa Claus Parade and Christmas celebration. We are constantly gathering info and looking for improvements for our annual visitors’ guide (published for us by the Creston Valley Advance). Plus, we have work on the annual spring Home and Garden Show.

Meanwhile, we are kicking off a membership drive for the chamber of commerce. We are a membership-based organization and cannot do the work we do without your help. We are always working to improve on the way we do things and the things we do. We want to start by asking a simple question, “What do you want us to do?” We welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions. Call me at the chamber of commerce and we can talk.

Jim Jacobsen is the executive director of the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. He can be reached at 250-428-4342 or [email protected].

To the Editor:(Re: “Pickers are among the finest peo-

ple”, Aug. 23 Advance, page 7)Thank you, Susan, for your letter to

the editor with a gentle reminder to all of us — that we should not judge a book by its cover or a person by what they wear.

Many of us do not have the oppor-tunity to meet or get to know the fruit pickers who come to work in our val-ley because they are here for such a short time. If we did have that privi-lege, I believe that we would think differently. These are young people who have come west to experience Western Canada and are away from their home province for most of the summer. Like any other young adults, they love to talk, ask questions, share their stories and are most grateful for anything special — like home baked muffins or fresh vegetables from the garden.

Picking fruit is not an easy job and it takes committed, hard-working indi-viduals to stick it out. Work starts early in the morning, some days are pretty hot by noon and some mornings can be very chilly, requiring toques and gloves. So while most of the population of Creston are still slumbering these young people are working hard to con-tribute to the main industry of our val-

ley, agriculture. Where would we be without the fruit pickers?

While I am saddened to learn that we as volunteers at the Gleaners make some rash and unnecessary comments, I would also like to say that we make a special effort to assist the fruit pickers by collecting and storing things that we have learned over the years that they may need. A simple request for warm sweaters, mitts and toques would be a mammoth task when you think there may be more than 500 boxes to check. So now we gather these items in prepa-ration for that request. We have learned to store bikes, backpacks, small packag-es of soaps, shampoo, small kitchen items and many other things for them.

The pickers are very grateful for all the hospitality and even though some have need of the food bank when they first arrive, they have also been known to give a donation to the food bank when they leave. Personally, I look forward each year to when the pickers return. They are a happy lot, full of life and energy.

To the Editor:I would like to say a special thanks

to the merchants of Creston who have fixed up their storefronts on Canyon

Street. The view is great and it is so much nicer than lots of small towns with horrible strip malls.

Special kudos to Pharmasave, Jimmy’s Pub and the Creston and District Credit Union for spending the bucks and having faith in Creston.

I can hardly wait until the Bigfoot Pub is redeveloped into high-end apartments and commercial space. We can all dream, can’t we?

doing a sand sculpture — that looks like a wood sculpture.”

The “wood sculpture” was a weird stack of different sized plywood frames in which Dawkins was preparing sand to carve. Layers of sand are watered and tamped within each box as he gradually builds up a sculpting base that becomes more like sandstone than sand. A finished sculpture can be sprayed with a white glue and water mix that can help it last for months, he says.

Dawkins turned that early experience in San Blas into a career, becoming the world’s (as far as he knows) first full-time professional sand sculptor. Over the next four decades, he would go on to travel to 92 countries, often winning sand sculpting competitions and teaching the craft wherever he could.

“I got the idea to go to shop-ping malls and fairs, any pubic venue that has a lot of people.”

He patterned his career after musicians, who tour from city to city, performing.

“In the early days I would travel and stay in hostels,” he says. “In competitions, I would work alone, competing against teams of up to ten people. …

“I’m a really fast shoveler,” he laughs. “I always started out with the biggest pile of sand!”

The last 39 years haven’t been all sand, travel and bikinis for Dawkins, though. He’s also

helped to pioneer snow-sculpt-ing competitions and done ice carvings, too.

He credits his experience as a stop-action film animator and artistic background for the atten-tion his carvings bring him. His creations are always designed to tell a story and give the appear-ance of movement.

Sand sculpting also brings out the competitor in him. In the early 1980s, he was part of a team of Californians that won a couple of team world champi-onships and consistently fin-ished in the medals in competi-tions. They eventually decided to become an all-California team and cut him loose.

“So later on I started another team and we beat them,” he laughs.

Canadians and Americans have traditionally been at the forefront of the sand sculpting competitive world, but European and, now, Chinese competitors have risen to the challenge.

Dawkins cites one of his most memorable experiences — of the 92 countries he has competed in 16 of them — as a 10-day competition in China that drew 10 million viewers over the course of the event.

“The Super Bowl wouldn’t compare as an event. It was a sea of people for the entire time.”

Dawkins didn’t abandon his early interest in film animation.

He came to Creston in part to escape the experience of 10 years in Toronto, where he built up a company of 20 employees, creating special effects, props and TV character costumes.

“It really got too big for me. I felt like I was losing my edge as an artist, so now I’ve gone back to the roots of where I started.”

He talks of trying to settle down, but admits the lure of travel is a strong one.

“The best education is trav-elling, I think. It is very mind-opening.”

Dawkins believes art is an important component in eco-nomic development and has seen his performance art grow into a major attraction that draws tourists and motivates other artists to get involved.

As he works on what he describes as “my most detailed project yet” on the Ramada Hotel lot (with plans to add to his list of world records), Dawkins gets the chance to interact with visi-tors and encourage locals to pick up a carving tool and get involved. Sculpting gives him time to think, too. Travels in Third World, developing countries, have inspired him to work on ways to create low-cost, small-scale housing, using his artistic talents to make tiny homes attractive, as well as functional.

But that, he says, is a story for another day. Warm, sunny weather is time for Dawkins to immerse himself in a creative outlet that he describes as being equal parts fine, com-mercial and perform-ing art.

The mounds of packed sand are ready to be transformed into complex, finely detailed stories that reflect his interest in communities and his-tory, all with a whimsi-cal bent that will allow return visitors to dis-cover new details each time they view his cre-ations.

Paul Dawkins didn’t start with a plan to spend much of his adult life making sculptures in sand.

“I like to tell people that the very beginning was when I was three years old, in a crib, reaching out between the bars for sand to mix,” he laughs.

The truth, though, is that he was an animation school student in San Diego, hanging out on a beach in San Blas, Mexico, north of Puerto Vallarta, and he “was bored silly.”

Let’s get on the beach and build something, he thought. Soon he was constructing a 20-foot dragon with coconuts for eyes.

“And I drew a wall of people, many of whom were asking ques-tions.”

He liked the attention — “It’s performance art, really” — and soon he was learning more about sand as a medium. He started, like kids playing on the beach, using only his hands to pile up the sand, wet it and start making shapes.

It was in California in 1977 that Dawkins saw carvers packing sand into wood boxes.

“I was amazed at what they were doing,” he recalls.

For the last few weeks Dawkins has been working on a sand carving at the corner of highways 3 and 3A, a prime traffic spot provided by the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre. It’s set under a rain-protected shelter and a common comment he has been faced with is, “I thought you were

Creston tomatoes are finally ripening! Fresh, vine ripened tomatoes are one of the best things about summer. Along with tomatoes, corn, potatoes,

peaches, plums and peppers are all available at the market this month, along with carrots, greens like lettuce and kale, onions and other fruits and veggies. This month, the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market will be at the Creston Valley Fall Fair at the usual time, 8 a.m.-noon. On the same day there will be a ven-dors’ appreciation event where customers will have the oppor-tunity to express appreciation for vendors they like. Come to the fall fair to participate!

Tomatoes are a part of the nightshade family, which includes chili peppers, potatoes and eggplants. Tomatoes were even thought to be poisonous at one point. Tomato allergies and sensitivities are fairly common,

but for anyone not sensitive to them they are actually very healthy. Tomatoes are low in cal-ories while being high in many different vitamins and minerals

and antioxidants. They are especially known for being high in lycopene, which is what gives tomatoes their color. Lycopene is believed to have a part in preventing certain types of can-cer, including skin

cancer, and protecting the skin and eyes from UV rays. It is best to choose organic varieties of tomatoes as the lycopene content is proven to be up to three times higher than in conventionally grown tomatoes.

Besides their antioxidant con-tent, tomatoes are very high in vitamin C along with niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin A, iron and potassium. Because of their nutritional content, tomatoes can help control cholesterol, prevent heart disease, and promote eye health and the immune system.

When choosing tomatoes, look for smooth, glossy toma-toes that are fully ripened and that are vibrant and richly coloured. The skin should not be broken at all and they should

not be wrinkly or too soft. When storing your tomatoes, be sure to keep them on the counter and out of the fridge unless they’re becoming over ripe. Tomatoes are sensitive to the cold and will not contin-ue to ripen if they are kept in the fridge so unripe tomatoes should be kept at room temper-ature until they ripen. Even ripe tomatoes can be kept at room temperature for a few days before they become overripe. To speed up ripening if you have unripe tomatoes, place tomatoes in a paper bag with a banana or an apple as they release a gas that will speed up the process.

Rinse your tomatoes to remove any dirt or residue and dry before using. Some recipes may call for peeling tomatoes. This is easily done by cutting an X in the bottom of the tomato and dropping into boiling water for 30-60 seconds. Remove from the boiling water and place in an ice bath immediately. When

the tomato is cold, easily peel the skin off, remove the spot where the stem was and use as needed.

While tomatoes are usually red, there are many different varieties

that are yellow, orange or even purple. They are usually used when fully ripened but can also be enjoyed while still green in differ-ent dishes, including fried green tomatoes, or different chutneys and curries. When fully ripened, they’re eaten raw, chopped over salads and sliced into sandwiches. They’re cooked into sauces and soups and condiments. When tomatoes are plentiful they can be canned or fro-zen, whole, diced or pureed. They can also be cooked into soups and sauces and then canned (depend-ing on the recipe) or frozen.

Cheesy Tomato SoupServes 4

1 tbsp olive oil1 large onion, sliced5-6 cloves garlic, sliced2.5 lbs or 1 kg fresh tomatoes

(about 5-6 cups), peeled and stem end removed

1/4 tsp salt1/4-1/2 tsp sugar (or less

depending on how sweet your tomatoes are)

2-3 tbsp fresh parsley1/4 C fresh basil1-1 1/2 C extra sharp cheddar

cheese, grated

In a medium-sized soup pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the onions and sauté for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally. After the onions are softened add the garlic and sauté for just a minute or two before adding the tomatoes. Crush slightly with the back of a wooden spoon to release the juices. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15 min-utes.

Once the soup has simmered long enough, throw the parsley, basil and cheese into the pot. Stir just to combine, then blend the soup with an immersion blender or transfer the soup to a blender or food processor in batches and blend until smooth.

Serve with an extra sprinkle of cheese over top and stir in a spoon-ful of yogurt for a creamier soup.

CRESTON CONCERT SOCIETY

We may not like to admit it, but autumn is fast approaching. The Creston Concert Society can help keep the heat on the approaching months with its upcoming series lineup. Visit our booth at the Creston Valley Fall Fair for even more information!

Starting the 2012-2013 season on Oct. 20 is the return of Lorne Elliott. Humorist, story teller, comedian and musician, Elliott is described as “unrelentingly hilarious” an “a genuine and talented nutcase.” Best known for his CBC series, Madly off in All Directions, on his previ-ous visit to Creston, he played to a sold-out crowd. (www.lorne-elliott.com)

Nov. 21 sees the return of the Toronto Consort, the internationally recognized ensemble known for its excellence in medieval, Renaissance and early baroque music. Featuring leading spe-cialists on lute, recorder, guitar, flute, early keyboards and percussion, Toronto Consort will present a story of Renaissance diplomacy in all its shades. (www.torontoconsort.com)

The Duo Rendezvous stars two of B.C.’s most dynamic young musicians, Daniel Bolshoy, Canada’s “reigning master of the guitar”, and Jasper Wood, Canada’s “violin virtuoso”, who will present a “rendezvous celebrating Paris.” Prepared to be entertained with their stories and dazzled by their skills. They perform Feb. 9, 2013. (www.dan-ielbolshoy.com, www.jasperwood.com)

Completing its first decade of artistic excellence with Passages, Ballet Kelowna

travels on a trans-continental journey through time from Spain to Russia and England to Canada, on March 9.

The season wraps up on April 6 with the multi-talented Shane Philip, whose simultaneous playing of didgeridoo, guitar and a variety of percussion instruments will stun lis-teners to silence or encourage them to rise up in a tribal sell of intoxicating spirit. Philip blurs the boundaries between folk, reggae, blues and beyond. (www.shanephilip.com)

Season tickets are $95 for adults, $45 for students and $245 for families (two adults and two students), available in the form of five tickets, which may be used for multiple entries to one show or one to each show. Season tickets are available at the Creston Concert Society booth at the fall fair or Creative Fix.

Individual concert prices are $22 for adults ($25 at door) and $10 for stu-dents ($12 at door), available at Black Bear Books. All performances will be held at Prince Charles Theatre.

Creston Concert Society announces season

(Clockwise from above) Toronto Consort, Lorne Elliott, Ballet Kelowna, Shane Philip and Duo Rendezvous comprise the Creston Concert Society’s 2012-2013 season.

The Columbia Basin Environ-mental Education Network (CBEEN) is thrilled to announce that world-re-nowned primatologist, conservation-ist and humanitarian, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, will be in Cranbrook from Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Goodall is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), and a United Nations Messenger for Peace.

Goodall will be offering her wide-ly acclaimed “Reason for Hope” pre-sentation at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook on Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. Following the presentation, Goodall

will be available for a question-and-answer period and book signing.

In addition to her public presen-tation, Goodall will also be speak-ing to a select group of students and educators about JGI’s Roots and Shoots — a global program that empowers youth to take positive action on environmental and humanitarian issues. This will com-plement the work CBEEN is already doing as an umbrella network for environmental education in the Columbia Basin. CBEEN’s Wild Voices for Kids (WVFK) program offers students free programs and field trips with local experts to pro-mote stewardship and a conserva-tion ethic through direct experience

of ecologically and culturally significant areas in their own backyard.

“To host Dr. Goodall’s first visit to the Kootenays is truly an honor for CBEEN,” said CBEEN executive director Duncan Whittick. “She travels exten-sively to share her story and message with leaders and citi-zens across the world. We antic-ipate with great excitement the spark that Dr. Goodall will kin-dle in environmental education in the Columbia Basin.”

CBEEN is grateful for the generous support from its pre-mier sponsor, Kicking Horse Coffee, along with feature spon-sors Kootenay Savings Credit Union, Columbia Basin Trust and the Black Press East

Kootenay Group. CBEEN would also like to recognize the important role of its supporting sponsors in making this event a reality, including St. Eugene Mission Resort, Key City Theatre, Cranbrook Photo, Wildsight, Kootenay Kwik Print and Lotus Books.

Tickets are $50.00 and can be purchased from the Key City Theatre Box Office, which can be reached at 250-426-7006.

CBEEN was founded in 2002 and is a registered charity and an umbrella network for envi-ronmental educators in the Columbia Basin. CBEEN encourages environmental stewardship and sustainability in the Columbia Basin by sup-porting environmental educa-

tion initiatives through capacity building, information sharing and educational programs. For regular updates on this event as well as other activities, visit www.cbeen.org.

The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada was founded in 1994 and is part of a dynamic net-work of Jane Goodall Institutes around the world. JGI supports habitat conservation and chim-panzee protection programs in Africa and runs Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots in Canada — a powerful, global program that inspires and empowers youth to be active global citi-zens and to take action to create sustainable and positive change. M y passion for horses began at a very young age and has been the primary focus of my life. I saved up and bought my fi rst horse at age eleven and still have him today along with

another gelding, a broodmare, and another leased mare that I am hoping to get my next prospects out of this coming year. I rode just about every discipline of riding growing up but dressage and jumping are my favorites. School came pretty easy for me as a child so I decided to become a vet around the age of ten with the thought of combining my academic ability with my love of horses. I was in Pony Club and 4-H for many years and got a good basic knowledge of horse care through those clubs.

G etting the acceptance letter from veterinary school after several years of college and univeristy in order to

complete all of the prerequisites was one of the best days of my life. I understood how competitive it was and becoming a vet was absolutely the only career I was interested in so it was pretty stressful wondering if I would ever get in, and therefore a huge relief when it fi nally happened!

I thought I would do soley equine work when I graduated, so in school I chose to do all of the equine electives and fi lled my practical year with mostly equine rotations. I stayed longer

in Saskatoon the summer before my fi nal year doing a six-week equine rotation that included medicine, surgery, and fi eld service in order to get more cases during the busier time of year.

This enabled me to get much more experience with reproductive work, foal medicine, general medicine, surgery, fi eld work, and a lot more training with equine dental work.

W hen I graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 I started work with

an equine vet in the West Kootenays and did strictly equine work for the fi rst few months. Come late summer, the equine work slowed down and it was time to look for small animal or mixed work. That is when I approached Dr. McLeod and was very lucky to get on at the Creston Veterinary Clinic where we see all animal species. I really like Creston and I love the clinic and the staff so I hope I will be working here for a very long time.

We all deserve a Healthy Smile...

Even our best friends!

Longtime Gray Creek resident Johnny Oliver died on Aug. 28 at the age of 92. Following is a story that appeared in a series of pioneer profiles in the Nelson Star:

BY GREG NESTEROFFNelson Star

At 92, Johnny Oliver is Gray Creek’s oldest old-timer. But he sure doesn’t act like it.

He’s a flirt and a card and will keep you in stitches. He jokes that he’s “127 per cent disabled” even as he continues to tend to his farm and extensive gar-dens. He says he has “thousands of friends and no enemies, but I don’t know why,” even though it’s obvious to most.

Born into a family that arrived in Gray Creek around 1905, Oliver grew up there and in Taghum, where his father worked in a sawmill. At 21, he joined the navy and reported for stoker training. (Seven other Olivers, brothers and cousins, also served in the Second World War.)

He cleaned boilers for a year, then was drafted onto the HMCS Weyburn for Mediterranean service. On its way home, the ship struck a mine off Gibraltar and sank, killing eight. Despite his own injuries, Johnny carried a badly burned sailor to safety.

He was the only one of 25 stokers he enlisted with to make the rank of chief petty officer/engine room artificer.

On weekend leave in 1942, he went to London to visit his brother George, who was dating a girl named Florrie Griffin. At her house, Johnny saw a pic-ture on the mantle of a woman who

looked like Rita Hayworth.“Who in the hell is that?” he asked.“That’s the girl you’re going to take

to the show tonight,” George replied.“They don’t make ’em like that in

Canada,” Johnny said.So began a romance that war and

prolonged absences couldn’t abate. Johnny and Grace only saw each other a few more times before they married on April 6, 1945.

In Canada, though, things were tough for Grace. Stepping off the train in Procter, a woman told her, “We’re tired of you hussies marrying all our men!”

Her mother-in-law didn’t approve of her either, for the Olivers were Catholic and Grace was Protestant. But gradual-ly, their relationship improved.

Johnny received his navy discharge in 1947, a year before his seven-year term was up. “I wanted to divorce the navy and hold on to Grace,” he says. “It was a good trade.”

His father bought him a neighbour-ing property, which they turned into a working farm, with all the necessary outbuildings and a house for a growing family. Grace and Johnny had three kids, fostered several more and became grandparents to the entire community.

Grace was an excellent chef, but when she became wheelchair-bound, Johnny looked after the meals. “She never com-plained about my cooking,” he says, “as long as I kept the thermos full of tea.” (Grace died in 2008, soon after her sister, who married Johnny’s brother.)

Johnny spent 25 years with the high-ways department, then retired to work

on his farm. Last month, he led a tour of the property, which still has cows and chickens. The hayloft, in particular, is a favourite for visitors.

He pointed out a gazebo he built when he was 90, and lamented that he can’t do as much as he used to, on doc-tors’ orders.

“They won’t let me split wood or throw baled hay or anything hard. I can only work about a quarter of what I did 60 years ago,” he said.

The recent Gray Creek museum days featured an exhibit on him and his fam-ily, including some tools he made in a navy mechanician course. Spotting a picture of himself around the time of his enlistment, he exclaimed, “Tear that down! Seventy years have turned me into an old man.”

Hardly.

The story of Gray Creek’s Johnny Oliver

CRESTON AND DISTRICT

PUBLIC LIBRARY

Foodies, cinephiles, farmers and chefs: Revel in this season of the Earth’s abundance! The Creston and District Public Library celebrates the harvest, salutes the valley’s agricultural sig-nificance and commem-orates B.C.’s Farmers Appreciation Week with its Fabulous Food Film Festival, presenting three stunning docu-mentary films that will tantalize your taste buds and excite your mind.

The films are:Ingredients, 7 p.m.

Sept. 13. Farmers and chefs are creating a truly sustainable food system. Their collab-orative work has resulted in great tast-ing food and an explo-sion of consumer awareness about the benefits of eating local. Ingredients illustrates how people are work-ing to revitalize the connection between farmers and food lov-ers. The film takes us across the U.S. from the diversified farms

of the Hudson River and Willamette Valleys to the urban food des-erts of Harlem and to the kitchens of cele-brated chefs Alice Waters, Peter Hoffman and Greg Higgins. Ingredients is a jour-ney that reveals the people behind the movement to bring good food back to the table and health back to our communities — told through mouth-watering cinematogra-phy.

To Make a Farm, 7 p.m., Sept. 14. What might the future of local food and farming look like? This enlightening and thought-provoking film follows five young people without farming backgrounds as they embark on making their farming dreams a reali-ty. Starting from scratch, they meet the risks and challenges of this demanding profession with determination,

dedication, imagina-tion, passion and sacri-fice. To Make a Farm is a hopeful look at small-scale food production, named one of the 10 most popular Canadian films at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Queen of the Sun, 2 p.m. Sept. 15. What are the bees telling us? Taking us on a journey into the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ulti-mately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the tiny pollinators of 30 per cent of the world’s food crops. Queen of the Sun follows colorful, alternative and inspir-ing beekeepers from all around the globe as they keep bees in natu-ral and holistic ways. From the United States to Italy, each has unique philosophical and spiri-tual insights into their bees and is striving to

keep their bees safe, healthy and produc-tive.

The Fabulous Food Film Festival takes place at the Creston and District Public Library (531 16th Avenue South). Admission is free. For more information, call the library at 250-428-4141.
