leading hikes for the Sierra Club for the last five years. Her quest, is to work toward her " I " rating which allows leaders to travel off-trail and in the snow. To accomplish this, she took an off-trail hike to Whale Peak, a bus trip and backpacking in Yosemite, and a 50-mile backpacking trip with her son, from Onion Valley to Horseshoe Meadows in the Eastern Sierras. Karen brings us along to share some of the high points from her experi-ences, including the view from the top of Forester Pass at ele-vation, 13,153.
Our program begins following news of Conservation and Outings. This a free program and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served. Please contact Pat Kramer, at 818 468-7278 for further program information.

Kariné Armen is a Glendale
kindergarten teacher, photogra-
pher, traveled to this costal South
American country during her
spring break last year and again
in the summer.
She spent three weeks in the
summer studying Spanish in
Cuenca at San Pedro Language
institute, which also helped ar-
range housing with a family for
$20 per night.
She gave a pictorial tour of

her spring and summer visits to
Ecuador, aptly named as it sits on
the equator.
Someone from the audience
whispered how brave she was to
travel places alone. Kariné said,
however, that she prepared to
make her trip solo. She noted her
surroundings, asked permission to
take pictures, even discarded her
camera bag in favor of a purse
that didn’t peg her as a photogra-
pher
In the Capital city of Qui-
to, she stayed at the Marriott hotel
rather cheaply, at $20.00 per
night. She witnessed the daily rit-
ual in which the President speaks
from the balcony of presidential palace.
Taxis were quite cheap at about $2.00 a
trip (incidentally, the U.S. dollar is currently
the country’s monetary unit).
She bought shawls, to give away as
Christmas presents, and other items. And
wore an outfit she purchased in Ecuador to
her presentation.
In Quito, she took pictures of the color-
ful Good Friday parade, with several shots
of parade participants carrying crosses and
looking as if they had undergone a flogging.
She also took some photos of folk,
mostly children, being sprinkled with green
leafy substance which, according to Karine
was a medicinal ritual.
