Tips for Better Living
We all pay for trash pick-up. The city wants us to keep the lids closed on the alley
dumpsters. The lid helps keeps RATS, OPOSSOMS and RACOONS from moving into
the area. So if you have a ripped or missing lid, call repair at 893-7261, ext. 3 You will
get it fixed in a week or two.
If that lousy neighbor left STUFF next to the can and it is getting a bit unsightly, just call
893-7398, FREE TRASH Pick-up. (Don’t leave your car too close to the can). Carpets,
wood, TVs and the like are picked up FREE. My neighbor and I added a concrete pad
to set the dumpster on. It feels good that you know a snake can’t fit under the can.
You see trash or an empty can rolling down the street, or some discarded wrapper.?
PICK IT UP! And bring it to our more than 200 trash receptacles. It improves your
cardio system and makes your mind feel better because of your effort to improve the
community. If a property has owners, tenants or business that seems oblivious or
inconsiderate to common care, and confrontation is not to your liking. St Petersburg
code enforcement may be able to help. ST PETERSBURG CODES ENFORCEMENT ‘s
number is 893.7373
By the way, if a handbill is stapled on a pole, and you put it up, please remove it after a
week or two! - Joseph Poltorak

Presidents Letter: Out with the Old..Out with the Old?
This month’s CHNA yard sale on Saturday,
March 9 is a great way to get started on your
spring cleaning. If you haven’t used your
crock pot in a dog’s age, you might as well
sell it to somebody who can get some use out
of it. I’ve found that when I look for items
to purge, I always find something I didn’t
know I had. I just saved $20 and a trip to
Home Depot when I found three shrink-
wrapped weed whacker spools buried in a plastic bin in my garage. As an added
bonus, eliminating clutter relieves stress, makes your house look nicer, and makes it
easier to clean and locate things you actually use. – Phil Trocchia

Home of the Month: 525 26th Ave N
Many of you may already know
this Month’s Home of the month,
located at 525 26th Avenue N, by
its welcoming cat named Stormy.
The house was purchased about
a year ago by Karry and Brian
Morrison. Previously to the
Morrison’s purchasing this house,
the house had been family owned
since 1928, when the area around
the house consisted mostly of
orange groves and few other
houses. There was one
contingency upon buying the house, it was that Stormy the Cat could stay. The
Morrison’s agreed and Stormy has embraced her new role of greeter to anyone who
stops or walks by…even dogs!
The Morrison family consists of Brian, Karry, young son, William "Liam" and four
cats, Stormy, Mattie, Addison, and Rose. They also have a dog, Abraham. Karry
works in marketing and Brian is a teacher at Largo High School. Previous to moving
to the Crescent Heights area, they lived near the intersection of 10th Street and 54th
Avenue.
With William leading the way, they often go to the Crescent Lake Park to enjoy the
open play area that is only five blocks from their home. They find Crescent Heights
Neighborhood, to be quiet, friendly and having a strong sense of community.
It is not uncommon, for neighbors to stop and chat while the Morrison’s are working
on the house or to pet Stormy, who takes advantage of the sunny southern exposure
of the home.
The house was built in 1928; it has three bedrooms, family room and two and half
baths. In addition to the main house, there is a garage apartment that has two
bedrooms and one bath. The additional living space above the garage is beneficial for
Brian’s parents who enjoy coming to St. Petersburg for the Florida “winter” weather.
A welcoming aspect of the home is the bright and cheery large front porch which
provides a nice play area for William and relaxing area for Karry and Brian. The front
porch has a beautiful eye catching tongue and grove style wood ceiling. The large
front porch is reminiscent of many older homes in the South, which provides a
friendly area in which to greet visitors and neighbors.
The Morrison’s do have some planned renovations for the home, however for now
they will be concentrating their efforts on the front yard landscaping. They will be
adding items, such as a hedge, flowers and a fence so that they can enjoy their front
yard as an extension of their porch.
If you should see Brian, Karry or William outside on one of these lovely spring days,
please stop to say hello or take a moment to meet Stormy the cat.

Freecycling – Gregory Garbers
I’d like to introduce my neighbors to freecylcing. Freecycling combines two of my favorite words: free
and recycling. Freecycle.org matches people who have things they need to get rid of with people who can
use them. The goal is to keep usable items out of the landfill.
By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and
lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle.org is that it encourages us to get rid of
junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. To sign up go to
freecylce.org, and select a user name and password. You will need to join the local St. Petersburg group.
When you choose email preferences, I suggest you select email digest. You will then receive an email
(usually daily) with a list of 25 posts of what people in your area would like to give away, and what some
people need. You can make posts yourself or respond to other’s posts by email and arrange to pickup
items. I have been doing it for a few years and it is very satisfying to see items that I was planning on
throwing away being put to good use. It’s a lot of fun.

Gone Girl – by Gillian Flynn
Review by Maureen Camphire
Gone Girl, a New York Times #1 bestseller, is a suspense novel about a woman gone missing and
whose husband is the prime suspect. This is not a new premise -- headlines often report this kind
of story. What is new and fascinating is Gillian Flynn’s extraordinary handling of the suspected
crime. She alternates chapters between Amy and Nick Dunne, her two main characters, allowing
the reader to get inside the heads of both the alleged victim and the accused.
Nick, the husband who is the chief suspect, seemed innocent at the start, but after getting to
“know” him from Amy’s point of view, one realizes that he has a much darker side. Amy is also a
likable character in the beginning, until her many quirks are revealed. To say that theirs is a very,
very dysfunctional marriage is putting it mildly. However, the book is an intriguing thriller, full of
psychological drama that keeps you wondering how it will be resolved until the very end.
The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work "draws you in and keeps you reading with the force
of a pure but nasty addiction. Gone Girl's toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling
prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn. “
The New York Times stated, “Gone Girl is this author’s third novel, and is Ms. Flynn’s dazzling
breakthrough. It is wily, mercurial, subtly layered and populated by characters so well imagined
that they’re hard to part with — even if, as in Amy’s case, they are already departed.”
Amazon goes on to say that “With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight,
Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms
her status as one of the hottest writers around.”
Please join us to discuss Gone Girl on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 PM. We will meet at 486 24th Avenue
N. For more information contact me at [email protected].
