A balanced diet, exercise, genetics, and even certain medications can work in concert to make a person healthy. But a person's demeanor also can factor into personal health.

The Mayo Clinic says that whether or not a person is an optimist or a pessimist can affect many areas of his or her health and well-being, and those who see the glass as half-full may ultimately be healthier than those who see it as half-empty.

Positive thinking can make it easier to manage stress. The body responds differently based on an individual's mood, and it may produce stress hormones if a person's outlook is negative. Such stress hormones can compromise the immune system, increase blood pressure and even reduce the body's ability to burn fat effectively.

Thinking negatively and being on edge also can increase a person's risk for developing cardiovascular disease and aging prematurely.

Conversely, maintaining a positive attitude can be good for your health. Studies have shown that thinking positively can lower rates of depression and anxiety, increase life expectancy and provide greater resistance to certain illnesses, such as the common cold. A 2012 preliminary study from researchers at Stanford University found that daughters of mothers suffering from depression were able to witness their own stress levels go down on a real-time brain scan as they switched from negative thoughts to happy ones.

Researchers are unsure why positive thinking has such profound effects. But in addition to limiting stress-releasing hormones, positive thinking may inspire people to live healthier lifestyles that make them more likely to get routine physical activity and eat a healthy diet. Happy people also may be less likely to use tobacco products or alcohol as a coping mechanism when dealing with elevated stress levels, and such people

will not have to deal with the side effects that can come with these unhealthy behaviors.

Becoming a more positive thinker can take a little effort for those without a natural inclination for optimism. But because positive thinking boasts such significant health benefits, men and women might want to try the following methods to embrace their optimistic side.

• Exercise. Start an exercise regimen, as physical activity naturally reduces stress and can improve mood.

• Embrace humor. Surround yourself with others who bring a smile to your face. Look for ways to laugh as much as possible. Rather than go out to dinner or a bar with friends, head to a comedy club. Choose comedies at the movie theater and find humor in everyday happenings.

• Identify areas that need change. Think about moments in life that may bring you down or inspire negative reactions. If work is problematic, figure out ways to make it better and work toward improving the situation.

• Be supportive of yourself. Consider what you would say to others and then treat yourself the same way. Would you be overly negative or derogatory toward a complete stranger? Probably not, and there is no reason to be harsh with yourself, either. Push negative thoughts away.

• Volunteer. One way to see the world in a more positive light is to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Volunteering not only helps others, but it also can help you put your own problems in perspective. Volunteering also helps you feel good about your efforts, which can translate into positive thinking.

• Think like a child. Take a cue from youngsters and find joy in the little things. Let children be the leaders in activities and mimic what they do. You just may find yourself laughing more and enjoying yourself. Being silly for a little while is one way to recapture the feelings of youth.

Positive thinking is more than the subject matter of self-help books. It's a viable way to improve personal health and live longer.

There are various habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. But one healthy habit in particular, the routine of having a nutritious breakfast every morning, is one that can positively impact your family.

A nutritious breakfast is important to fuel your body and brain after an overnight fast, and provide the nutrition you need to start the day. For parents who want their children to be their best, good nutrition at breakfast can make all the difference. In fact a good breakfast is just as important as having sharp pencils and the right gym shoes.

TIPS TO START THE DAY RIGHT

To help your kids get the right start to the school day, follow these nutrition and wellness tips:

• BE A HEALTHY ROLE MODEL

Kids emulate everything their parents do, including eating habits when mealtime rolls

around. Show your kids that making smart, healthy choices is something that is important and vital to you. When they see you choosing vegetables and fruits over junk food, they will want to follow in your footsteps. When they adopt these types of eating habits, they’ll have the proper fuel to help get them through their school days.

• STOCK UP ON SIMPLE OPTIONS

Do you ever have those hectic mornings when you’re trying to get everyone out the door? Easy-to-make breakfast options are great to have on hand, such as Carnation Breakfast Essentials nutritional drinks and bars. These convenient products offer an easy and nutritious way for your kids to start their day right, with a rich source of protein and 21 vitamins and minerals, including calcium to help build strong bones.

• MIX UP LUNCHES

A lunch consisting of a sandwich, cheese stick and apple can be boring after just a few days. Turn last night’s leftovers into a delicious lunchtime meal. For example, grilled chicken can be turned into a wrap, or taco meat can be a perfect topping for salad or rice. This type of repurposing can save busy parents time and money throughout the school year.

• GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

A great day in the classroom starts with a restful night of quality, restorative sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, kids between ages 3-5 should get between 11-13 hours, while kids between ages 5-12 should get 10-11 hours of sleep. Create a good environment for sleep, which consists of a quiet, dark and cool room that is free of distractions, such as televisions, computers and smartphones.

• MAKE BREAKFAST FUN

Keep the options for this important morning meal exciting for your kids by mixing in their favorite fl avors. Smoothies are a kid favorite that can be quickly created with low fat milk, frozen fruit and a packet of Carnation Breakfast Essentials powder drink mix.

So help your children be their very best by incorporating these tips into your family routine. For helpful recipes and additional tips, visit www.carnationbreakfastessentials.com.

The compelling calls to action from business leaders, economists, educational experts and politicians across the country have brought increased attention to the importance of early childhood education. This groundswell around the fi rst fi ve years has left parents wondering what the excitement is all about.

Research shows that the development which takes place during the fi rst fi ve years of a child’s life is critical to success in life, and parents, caregivers and early educators play a pivotal role in fostering this growth.

“My career has been focused on a combination of pediatrics, parenting, early brain development and early education and care, and I have seen fi rst-hand the impact that high-quality early care can have on the future success of a child,” said Dr. Laura Jana, pediatrician, early childhood expert and pediatric advisor to Primrose Schools, a leader in educational child care with more than 280 schools nationwide. “As I meet with parents, medical experts and business leaders around the country to address parenting needs, child development, and early education and care, I fi nd that the more they understand about the growth and

development in a child’s brain during the fi rst fi ve years, the more they appreciate this invest-in-kids movement.”

Why the fi rst fi ve years are critical

Dr. Jana uses key connections to help explain how and why the fi rst fi ve years are critical for child development and future success:

Connecting the neurons

Babies are born with more than 100 billion nerve cells in their brains. These neurons must connect and communicate with each other in order to form the circuits

needed to think, learn and succeed — something neurons do at the remarkable rate of 700 connections per second in the fi rst fi ve years of life.

Connecting language and literacy abilities with future success

Reading and talking to young children are fundamentally important activities to their development. In a landmark study, Betty Hart and Todd R. Risley, child psychologists at the University of Kansas, found that children roughly began talking at the same age. However, the level to

which parents spoke to them — both frequency and quality of words spoken — had signifi cant implications not only on their vocabularies by age 3, but also on their IQ, literacy skills and future academic success.

Connecting early skills to workforce development

Writer and speaker Paul Tough’s How Children Succeed book offers an insightful overview of the evolving educational paradigm shift towards teaching skills necessary for the 21st century. Instead of the more purely cognitive focus of decades past, those dedicated to raising children for success are now focusing on character traits, such as grit, perseverance and leadership skills. These valuable skills can be fostered in early childhood, and are proving to be better predictors for later success than IQ scores or standardized tests.

Activities to stimulate young minds

Research shows that daily physical activity helps children perform better academically, and there are several ways to foster these skills with your own children. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s Active Start book offers age-appropriate tips to keep children moving while powering up their brains. The key components of the Primrose Schools Thumbs Up! program are derived from these principles. Here are some activities you can try at home:

INFANTS

• Play simple games like peek-a-boo that encourage small movements, crawling and cooing.

TODDLERS

• Allow walking and running in open areas to improve balance.

PRESCHOOLERS

• Introduce activities that elevate heart rates, such as dancing, biking or jumping rope.

Understanding the critical development that takes place during the fi rst fi ve years and fostering these essential connections and skills will help shape our next generation of leaders. For more information, visit welcome.primroseschools.com.

Summer is a season beloved by many. Warm air, time off from school and summer hours at the offi ce make the months of June, July and August some of the most relaxing weeks of the year.

Unfortunately, like all seasons, summer must eventually come to a close. But even as summer's end draws near, there is still time to squeeze in one last summer trip. The following are a few tips for travelers who simply can't say "so long" to summer without one more warm weather excursion.

* Find a deal on lodging. You can still fi nd a deal on lodging even if your end-of-summer trip is a spur of the moment affair. In fact, you might have a better chance of fi nding a deal if you wait until the last minute than you would have if you booked months in advance. That's especially true if you are planning a weekend getaway to a beachside community. Such communities typically boast signifi cant inventories of summer rentals, and recognizing that the fi nal weeks of summer are their last opportunities to generate rental income, owners of such rentals are often inclined

to lower their prices if they have not yet rented their units. Renters who don't mind waiting until the last minute to book their waterfront escape might just fi nd that their patience pays off with big discounts.

* Be fl exible. Flexibility is another friend to men and women booking end-of-summer getaways. If you have vacation days to spare, consider traveling midweek instead of on Friday or Saturday, as you might fi nd more affordable fl ights and/or lodging if you travel on days when many people will be in their offi ces. In addition, traveling midweek is a great way to avoid the traffi c jams and crowded airports and train stations that have become a staple of summer weekend travel.

* Don't stray too far. If your trip is truly a last-minute affair, then you might want to set your sights on a destination that's close to home. A last-minute fl ight to a land far away can break the bank, and booking trips at the last minute may mean you have to travel during off-peak hours when it can be less convenient and enjoyable to get away. If traveling far and wide will put too great a dent in your fi nances or fi nd you

dealing with long layovers, then consider a place closer to home so you can spend more time relaxing and less time traveling.

* Keep it simple. The vacation of a lifetime at the end of summer can make for a memorable experience, but keep in mind that end-of-summer trips are often seen as one fi nal opportunity to unwind and enjoy the relaxing nature of summer. If your trip is fi lled with sightseeing and other activities, you may feel exhausted by the time you return and never get the last-minute respite from the daily grind that you were hoping your end-of-summer excursion would provide.

* Pack light. While it's important to pack all of the little things you need every day, when packing for an end-of-summer getaway try to pack light. If the weather fi gures to be warm, you won't need to pack any coats, jackets or even long pants. Packing light fi ts the theme of a relaxing summer getaway and allows you to avoid waiting at baggage claim or stressing out over how to cram everyone's luggage into the trunk of your car.

End of summer travel tips

Many people like to host parties for friends and family members. Advanced notice of such gatherings gives hosts ample time to get organized.

But sometimes hosting duties fall on our shoulders out of the blue when a relative is unexpectedly in the area or a friend suggests stopping by to catch up over a cup of coffee. In such instances, what is a host or hostess to do?

When tasked with last-minute hosting duties, fi rst fi gure out how much time you have before the guest or guests are expected to arrive. This allows you to take inventory of your home. While you will not be able to give every room a complete overhaul, you likely will be able to squeeze in some last-minute straightening up. Focus your energy on one or two rooms of the house where you and your guests can spend your time.

When getting the house ready at the last minute, empty the sink of dirty dishes and load them into the dishwasher. Wipe down countertops and tame any cluttered counters. Simply make piles of these items

and move them to another room out of sight.

In a living room or dining room, give surfaces that are at eye level a quick dusting. Sweep crumbs from hardwood fl oors or take out the vacuum cleaner and give fl oors a once-over to combat dust bunnies. Plump sofa pillows and open the blinds to make the room brighter and more inviting. Freshen up a dining room table by putting on a new tablecloth and move a potted plant from elsewhere in the home to the table for an easy centerpiece.

Focus signifi cant attention on the

bathroom. Counters and sinks should be wiped clean, and fresh hand towels should be hung on the rack for guests. Give the toilet a good scrubbing, and vacuum any hairs or dust that has accumulated in the corners of the fl oor. A few spritzes of perfume or air freshener can make the space smell inviting. These quick cleaning tasks should take no more than an hour.

When serving meals or snacks, be honest with your

guests. Explain that you did not have a chance to visit the grocery store, and suggest they bring a cake, cookies or another snack. Add a splash of fl avor to water by fl oating slices of lemon,

cucumber or apple in a decorative pitcher. Crackers and sliced cheese can serve nicely in a pinch.

Guests who will be arriving around dinner time will likely expect a meal. Casseroles and pasta dishes can be expanded to feed a crowd. Select a meal that is fi lling so you won't have to prepare as much food. If you simply do not have enough ingredients to whip up something substantial, ask guests if they would mind dining out or ordering in. With an array of restaurants offering delivery or curbside pickup, you likely can order anything from steak dinners to a bucket of chicken, depending on your preferences. As long as you are gracious and accommodating, guests won't mind if you do not provide something home cooked.

If unexpected guests are immediate members of your family, you may not have to go to great lengths to organize your home and prepare a spread of refreshments. Still, everything should be orderly and you can do your best to be welcoming no matter how short the notice.

Unexpected company is coming: What now?

With toxins from algae on Lake Erie fouling up the water supply in Toledo and its neighboring cities, drinking water was in short supply Saturday in Lucas, Fulton and Wood counties. The bottled water shortage forced many of those residents to head to Defiance to stock up. Above, Shelli and Joe Spears, Waterville, unload their cart at Meijer while at left, the truck bed of Toledoans Tom Danker and Scott Hoffman is filled with 60 cases of water.

The dog days of summer get their name from the star Sirius, commonly known as the "Dog Star." In ancient times, when artificial lights did not obscure the stars, people looked to the sky as a source of inspiration and answers to questions they otherwise could not explain. Groupings of stars known as "constellations" were used to tell stories, and these stories were part of ancient folklore.

One constellation prominent during the summer months is Canis Major, which includes a bright star named "Sirius." Ancient peoples surmised that this star's brightness warmed the Earth, not unlike the sun. In addition, Sirius rises and sets in conjunction with the sun in the summer. It was believed that Sirius added even more heat to the sun, creating the humid and especially hot days of summer. This time on the calendar was thusly named the dog days of summer.

Thanks to scientific study and a better understanding of astronomy and weather, it is known that the dog days of summer do not owe their extreme warmth to Sirius. Rather, the heat is a direct result of the Earth's tilt on its axis during this time of the year.

Dog days of summer

People frequently

refer to the month of August as "the dog days

of summer."

Homeowners who have not yet upgraded to a programmable thermostat could be doing themselves a signifi cant disservice. Not only are programmable thermostats key to saving energy, they also save money.

The Alliance for Environmental Sustainability note that for every degree they adjust their thermostats, homeowners save between 1 and 3 percent on their heating and cooling bills. Setting the thermostat slightly warmer in the summer and a notch or two cooler in the winter can save a considerable amount of energy and money. The United States Department of Energy says homeowners who make slight seasonal adjustments to their thermostats can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling costs.

But such adjustments are only truly effective when homeowners commit to them on a daily basis. The best way to stay on top of temperature settings is to purchase a programmable thermostat, which allow homeowners to predetermine when heat or air conditioning will turn on and off. Many programmable thermostats can store multiple daily settings, allowing homeowners to further customize their heating and cooling schedules based on the time of day as well as the day of the week.

According to Energy.gov, a common misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace or an air conditioning system works harder than normal to get the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, and that this hard work

means the overall savings are negligible. However, when a home's interior temperature is similar to the temperature outside, the home will lose energy to the surrounding environment more slowly. The lower the interior temperature, the slower the heat loss in cold weather, and a higher interior temperature will slow the fl ow of heat into your house in hot weather.

Programmable thermostats are available in a variety of models. Some are easier to program than others. Certain thermostats can be linked to a home's wireless system so that adjustments to the thermostat can even be made when you are not at home. Consult with an HVAC expert to see if a particular thermostat works best with your system. Some homes may benefi t from a dual- or multi-zoned system, which allows homeowners to adjust the temperature independently from other fl oors or wings of a home.

The location of the thermostat also is important. The thermostat should be placed where it can get the most accurate reading of the house. It should be on an interior wall away from direct sunlight, doorways, drafts, and windows. It should not be directly facing an air vent. Avoid placing furniture above or below the thermostat, as such furnishings can impede proper air fl ow.

If you feel like your HVAC system is cycling on and off even after programming, you may need to call a technician, who can determine if there are any obstructions to the thermostat or if the unit is the appropriate size for your home.

Homemade eatsSpice up your scrambled eggsConventional wisdom says breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But many people fi nd breakfast is also the most bland meal of the day. Those who want to venture off the beaten break-fast path to enjoy something more fl avorful than another bowl of cereal can spice things up with this recipe for “Akoori (Indian Scrambled Eggs),” a tasty if somewhat more fi ery take on traditional scrambled eggs from Suneeta Vaswani’s “Easy Indian Cooking” (Robert Rose).

Akoori (Indian Scrambled Eggs)

Akoori (Indian Scrambled Eggs) Serves 4 to 6

8 eggs1 teaspoon salt or to taste1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper3 tablespoons oil1 teaspoon cumin seeds1 cup chopped onion2 teaspoons fi nely chopped green chile (see tip)1 cup chopped tomato1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper1/4 teaspoon turmeric1/4 cup cilantro, choppedTomato wedges and cilantro sprigs, for garnish

1. In a bowl, gently whisk eggs, salt and pepper. Do not beat.2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat and add cumin seeds. Stir in onion and green chile and saute until golden, 3 to 4 minutes.3. Add tomato and saute, stirring continuously, for 1 minute. Stir in cayenne, turmeric and cilantro. Cook for 1 minute longer. Reduce heat to medium-low and slowly add egg mixture. Cook, stirring gently, until eggs are soft and creamy, 3 to 4 minutes. Do

not overcook.4. Serve garnished with tomato wedges and cilantro sprigs.Tip: The important thing in Indian cooking is to use a chile pepper with spirit. Fresh cayenne peppers, or any similar ones, would work very well. If using Thai peppers, now readily available in North America, use only half the amount called for in the recipe. In a pinch, jalapenos also can be used.
