I live in Montana; in fact, I commute across a railroad track and often have to wait for a coal train to pass. Thecoal dust is known to adversely affect health. The irony is that most of this coal is being shipped to China, where itpollutes their air and increases carbon dioxide levels, which causes climate change that we Montanans acutely feltthis summer and fall as forest fire smoke choked our breathing. Please do not allow another coal line to be built inour last best place: stop the Tongue River Railroad.

I’ve been teaching secondary science here in Miles City along the Tongue River for over 20 years. Since 1994 I’vetaken students out to sample the water quality and macro-invertebrates on the river. It’s obvious that this river, atreasure and lifeline in Eastern Montana, has its challenges with heavy irrigation withdrawals and coal bed methanewater inputs from Wyoming. The last thing this riparian ecosystem needs is a railroad on its banks and a strip mineupstream tearing up the aquifers. Allowing this project to proceed is putting greed and big corporations ahead ofthe environment and local agriculture. Agriculture, especially ranching, along the river is the best use for this landand most compatible with the native ecosystems. The coal resource can be utilized in a more responsible way thatwill not disrupt our way of life and the ecosystem. As we speak, the microbes in the coal seams are converting avery dirty fuel into clean natural gas. This gas could be ”harvested” over the long-term without the environmentaldisasters of strip mines and rail lines. I hope you make the right decision for the benefit of the life that calls thisvalley home.

I am very opposed to the Tongue River Railroad application to build a new rail line to carry coal through Montanato Asia. From a public health standpoint, pollution is associated with serious health concerns like respiratory andcardivascular disease as well as cancer.
