If you’ve resolved toeat better this year, startby packing your platewith produce, includinga dynamite little fruit –the Concord grape. Con-cord grapes are bold intaste and pack quite anutritious punch. Theycan be enjoyed as 100

percent grape juice or insimple, healthy andflavor-packed recipes.

Welch’s uses Concordgrapes grown in NorthAmerica exclusively byits family-farmer own-ers, who work tirelesslyduring harvest season tocollect exceptional fruit

Snoring can be annoy-ing, but it can also signala more serious underly-ing health conditioncalled Obstructive SleepApnea (OSA). OSA is abreathing disorder inwhich breathing is brief-ly and repeatedly in-terrupted during sleep, and most often occurswhen the airway musclesfail to keep the airwayopen while asleep. Ac-cording to the WorldHealth Organization,OSA affects one in fourmen and one in ninewomen. The most com-mon treatment for OSAis wearing a devicecalled a Continuous Posi-tive Airway Pressure(CPAP) mask when sleep-ing.

Dr. Timothy J Kitzmil-ler, DDS understandsOSA because he himselfhas it. That’s why hestarted Cincinnati DentalSleep Medicine. Dr. Kitz-miller explains, “Manypeople can’t tolerate aCPAP machine because

of discomfort, claustro-phobia or just the in-convenience of having towear a mask every timeyou go to bed. So I en-rolled in specializedtraining out of state toprovide myself and mypatients a CPAP alterna-tive called an oral appli-ance. It’s a medical de-vice that fits over yourteeth and holds the lowerjaw forward while yousleep, keeping the airwayopen.”

Dr. Kitzmiller and hisstaff want to educatepatients on the dangersof snoring and sleepapnea and conduct aneasy screening processto determine if they haveit, then provide a moreuser-friendly treatmentoption. “Many of ourpatients are women

bringing their husbandsin for a consultation be-cause they hear themstruggling to breathethroughout the night,”said his wife, Lori Kitz-miller, who oversees thedental sleep medicineaspect of the practice.“As his wife, I can say ithas definitely helped. Nosnoring and his apnea isbeing managed.”

Besides offering solu-tions for obstructivesleep apnea, Dr. Kitzmil-ler also provides generaldental services, includ-ing: bonding; crowns andbridges; dentures; im-plants; veneers; and whit-ening and braces, in-cluding Invisalign. “Weeven offer Botox andJuvederm to help im-

You probably know taxdeductions are an impor-tant part of your incometax return and that youwant as many as possible. But do you understandhow deductions actuallysave you money or howto determine which onesyou can claim on your taxreturn?

“Simply put, deduc-tions lower the amount ofyour taxable income,”explains Jessi Dolmage, spokesperson for Tax-ACT, makers of populartax-preparation software.“The more deductionsyou have, the less tax youpay.”

Knowing which deduc-tions you qualify for andwhether you should item-

ize is easy with do-it-yourself tax preparationproducts. Dolmage says:“The program eliminatesthe guess work. Answersimple questions aboutdeductions and it will tellif you’re better off item-izing or taking the stan-dard deduction. It alsochecks for errors andoffers one-on-one taxhelp every step of theway.”

You have the choice ofclaiming the standarddeduction or itemizingdeductions on your taxreturn, but you shouldchoose whicheveramount is higher.

Nearly two out ofthree taxpayers claim thestandard deduction.

Amounts are adjusted forinflation each year, varyby filing status and arehigher for those 65 andolder or who are legallyblind. For 2012 federaltax returns due April 15,2013, standard deductionamounts are:

» $5,950 for single, ormarried filing separately

» $11,900 for marriedfiling jointly, and qualify-ing widows(ers)

» $8,700 for head ofhousehold

If you itemize, yourdeductions are listedseparately on your taxreturn. Itemized deduc-tions are reported onSchedule A and can onlybe filed with long Form1040. On the other hand,

taxpayers claiming thestandard deduction canfile Form 1040, 1040A or1040EZ.

Itemized deductionsmay include mortgageinterest, state and localtaxes, charitable gifts, unreimbursed employeeexpenses, uninsuredcasualty or theft losses, and miscellaneous deduc-tions.

However, your ex-penses must meet certainrequirements to qualifyas itemized deductions.

For instance, certainmiscellaneous deductionsmust exceed 2 percent ofyour adjusted gross in-come, and unreimbursedmedical and dental costsmust exceed 7.5 percent

of your adjusted grossincome.

If your tax returnfiling status is marriedfiling separately, bothspouses must claim thesame deduction type.

If one spouse itemizesdeductions, the othermust also itemize, andvice versa.

All taxpayers are eligi-ble for certain deduc-tions, regardless ofwhether they itemize.

Examples includetraditional IRA contribu-tions, student loan in-terest, alimony pay-ments, moving expensesand a portion of yourself-employment tax (ifapplicable).

Best Furniture Galleryin Fort Thomas, Ky., hashad a lot of customerscome through its doorssince it was founded in1941. And current ownersCraig and Carolynn Reishave answered a lot ofquestions from both long-time and first-time cus-tomers about what setsBest Furniture apartfrom other furniturestores. Here are just afew of those questions, along with their answers.

Does Best FurnitureGallery ever have sales?

Rather than havingwhat Craig calls, “fakesales,” Best Furniturebelieves in simply of-fering the best pricespossible, every day. “Wedon’t believe in trying tofool our customers bymarking merchandise upjust to lower it for a pro-motion. We offer the bestproducts at a fair priceevery day, and our cus-tomers appreciate thatthey can focus on gettingtheir room right insteadof feeling pressured thatthey have to buy today or

they will miss the specialdeal,” said Craig. Thatdoesn’t mean that BestFurniture isn’t confidentin their low prices. “Wedo a lot of homework andknow that our prices arethe best around. In therare instance that a cus-tomer finds the exactsame item at a lowerprice in our market, weappreciate them bringingit to our attention and weare happy to take care ofthem,” added Craig.

Best Furniture main-tains an extensive onlineClearance Center whereyou can enjoy extra-spe-cial savings on qualityfloor samples and close-out merchandise. Thismerchandise representshuge savings, consideringit has beenmarked downfrom already low prices.“Again, we don’t playgames andmark ourclearance items up ...these products are oftenpriced below our cost.”

Can I buy a sofa I seeon your showroomfloor?

Often, you can pur-chase a floor sample rightout of the showroom, butBest prides itself on of-fering pieces custommade to your specifica-tions and to fit yourneeds. “We can orderalmost any piece you seein our showroom in thefinish or fabric you want, but we also have to makesure the item is there toshow the next customerthat comes in,” explainedCraig.

In the coming months, many aging adults maybe planning to have aneeded surgery, such as ahip or knee replacement.

For many, it is com-mon to consider the reha-bilitation required aftersuch an important sur-gery, but often, one doesnot think about the impor-tance of preparing his/her body prior to surgery.

There are many activ-ities that can be complet-ed before surgery whichhelp ensure that elderlypatients will be in theirbest condition beforetheir necessary proce-dure.

As opposed to “reha-bilitation” after surgery, this is referred to as“prehabilitation.”

Such a program isdesigned to improvestrength and perfor-mance of functionaltasks, as well as reducethe amount of pain andrecovery time followingsurgery.

A recent study, foundthat knee and hip re-placement patients that

participated in an exer-cise-based physical thera-py program six weeksprior to surgery reducedtheir need for inpatientrehabilitation by 73 per-cent.

“The benefits of exer-cise before surgery arevery clear: the more youcan do for yourself phys-ically before surgery, thebetter off you will be,”says lead study authorDaniel Rooks, Ph.D.,assistant professor ofmedicine at HarvardMedical School.

At Triple Creek Retire-ment Community, ourexpert staff is speciallytrained to assist you inbecoming as well condi-tioned as possible prior tosurgery through a varie-ty of moderate exercise, including warm-ups,cardiovascular activity, strength training, flex-ibility training and func-tional skills.

Our specialized careeven extends throughoutthe entire recovery proc-ess if you are unable toreturn home directly

after surgery or an in-jury.

Our Home Again reha-bilitation program willpamper you while youundergo physical/occupa-tional and/or speech ther-apy, and we’ll get youback to maximum inde-pendence fast.

You’ll exercise withsome of the most modernequipment, using in-novative therapy ap-proaches with provenresults.

And once you’re readyto return home, we’llsend you back with pre-pared meals and com-plete a home inspectionto ensure your safety. You’ll be amazed at howquickly you’re able toreturn home.

For more informationabout our state-of-the artprehabilitation program,and/or to find out moreabout the services andamenities of our propri-etary Home Again reha-bilitation program, pleasecontact a member of ourstaff today at 513-851-0601.

Program at Triple Creekwill help you get homefaster following surgery

ily mean great expense.Gathering at home withchampagne, maybe acheese plate and a home-made music playlist canmake for one of the mostmemorable occasions ofyour life.

Just be sure your fu-ture spouse is the centerof attention, and you’ll beset to make the eventunforgettable.

Capture the moment

Nearly all coupleschoose to hire photog-raphers and videogra-phers to capture thememories of their wed-ding day. But isn’t theengagement just as mo-mentous? As your heartbegins to race when yourknee bends toward theground, the last thing onyour mind will be yourcamera. But being able toactually look back at thismoment will be some-thing you’ll treasure foryears to come.

If you plan on hiring aprofessional photogra-pher, make sure to call atleast a few weeks in ad-vance. Luckily, unlikeyour wedding day, you’llprobably only need thephotographer for an houror so. If you’re already ona shoestring budget, seeif a photography enthusi-ast friend will take photosfor you. They may notend up in The Louvre, butwith a decent camera, you’ll be sure to havesome great snapshots ofthe big moment.
