Behold, how good and how pleasant it is to dwell together in unity!

God began the creation of the world by saying, “Let there be light.” We begin Shabbat with light saying, “Baruch atah Adonai, Beloved are You, Adonai.” We make Shabbat, a holy day for ourselves. May the warm glow of the candles remind us of God’s light, and may this Shabbat be a special holy time for us.

The practice of welcoming the Sabbath as Israel’s bride ismentioned in the Talmud, and on the basis of this the sixteenth-

century Kabbalists in Safed developed an elaborate ritual in whichthey would go out into the fields dressed in white garments towelcome the Sabbath, identified by them with the Shekhinah.

Chatzi Kaddish serves as a separator between kabbalat shabbat and the maariv service. Its' rhythmic repetitions of synonyms of praise

are meant to help one achieve a greater meditative state.

Maariv Aravim:The darkness

of the first day differedfrom the darkness that preceded creation. The root of maariv can also

Everlasting love You offered Your people Israelby teaching us Torah and mitzvot, laws and precepts.Therefore, Adonai our God,when we lie down and when we rise up, we will meditate on your lawsand your commandments. We will rejoice in your Torah for ever. Day and night we will reflect on them for they are our life and doing them lengthens our days. Never remove Your love from us. Praise to You, Adonai, who loves Your people Israel.

Originally this prayer was a kavanah, an intention, to bring meaning to the upcoming Shema prayer. It speaks of God's gift of Torah aseverlasting love. And in return, it expresses our love for Torah.

Shema: The shema/v'ahavta speaks of the tefillin, the phylacteries,on hand and forehead, and the mezuzah which is affixed to the

doorpost. These are concrete symbols of our love for God,representing larger truths. We often place a shin (ש ) on these objects.

The shin stands for Shaddai, a name of Godwhich is an acronym for,

"Guardian of the Doors of Israel."

Notes for Mi Shebeirach:One of the central Jewish prayers

for those who are ill or recovering fromillness or accidents is the Misheberach. The

prayer takes its name from the first two words:“mi" and "sheberach” meaning, “the One who

blessed.” It asks that the One who blessed ourancestors bring about a complete healing for theperson for whom the blessing is said.The prayer

is for the physical cure as well as spiritual healing, asking for blessing, compassion, restoration,

and strength, within the community ofthose facing illness.

For you spread out the heavens and established the earth; Your majestic abode is in the heavens above and Your mighty Presence is in the loftiest heights. You are our God and there is none else. Mourner's Kaddish Translation:Exalted and hallowed be God's great name in the world

which God created, according to plan. May God's majesty be revealed in the days of our lifetime and the life of all Israel speedily, imminently, to which we say Amen. Blessed be God's great name to all eternity.

Blessed, praised, honored, exalted, extolled, glorified, adored, and lauded be the name of the Holy Blessed One, beyond all earthly words and songs of blessing, praise, and comfort. To which we say Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us and all Israel, to which we say Amen. May the One who creates harmony on high, bring peace to us and to all Israel. To which we say

Amen.
