ProblemSearch engines currently provide bits and pieces of results - not the full picture the user was after. Particulalrly if the user is in "research/browse mode". The net generation like to find - and create - search is not seamless in this regards. Search should help people create the digital picture they envisage - in other words search should assist the user to create.

ProblemCreating digital content is a painstaking process - with a variety of desktop and online tools required.Creation - needs to be faster and more immediate. For a significant number of people the net is - "hey this is what I am doing now"... It is also has been reported that the status messages of social sites such as twitter and facebook - are on average boring. To some proof that we do indeed live dull existences..

The SolutionThe solution - Creative Search allows the user to find any multi-media or other media on the web. They are then able to collate the information they find and then use information creatively. At its simplest they are able to mash and drag the results - and create rich pagelets which can then be shared via the web or simply stored within the search engine.

USE CASE 1Example a user is interested in Jimmy Hendrix. The engine returns a set of Jimmy Hendrix video, images, pictures, audio and websites (website's are returned as screen shots)..

Page 5: Creative Search Engine

The SolutionThe user likes some of the pics some of the audio etc and devices to drag the items into a work space

With a few clicks they have created a paglet with a jimmy Hendrix background - with several video clips ready to play ... and a background music of one of their favorite Hendrix tracks playing - plus a screenshot of their favorite Hendrix sites in a tabbed section.

They share the paglet instantly with their friends - the "I am thinking" phrase in their network leads to a thoughful yet quickly created media experience..

The SolutionThe advanced user can use gesture control to create. Using a PC's webcam the user can drag and drop media on a time line using hand gestures alone.

The can take snnipets of existing videos - add different audio - drop their own images into video. add audio to pics etc... etc..... all with gesture control.

The become the conductor of the search results using them to create. Therefore a creative search experience - could be 3D audio/video.

Search as a JourneyUse Case 2 The user types in/or says Jimi Hendrix.

They see on the screen a bank of video and pics which they can explore. They can also see blog/chatter re Jimi Hendrix. When they look at the blogs (webcam detects where the viewer is focusing on the screen or gesture - or touch) - the blog information comes into focus. By focusing on more distant objects - it might be they can see the fashion of the time, news articles - major events.

Search as CreationUse Case 3 The user is able to drag and drop the interesting pieces of their journey - and then can arrange them spatially. The user can also arrange the "exhibits" within the spatial world - and then sequence them.

This would be similar to a "second life" environment - however the user would create their own unbounded environment by placement of media objects.

Credits...As users will be able to mash just about any piece of content a system of credits would be created.

I.e. the owners of found content will be credited and linked to. Similar to film credits.

Why NowPeople are looking for new ways to search - and new ways to explore - however start-up search engines and even the larger engines (such as Bing) - provide the same or worse experience than Google.

There has been no paradigm shift in search.

There is however keen interest in new search experiences.

Take for instance Cuil - an enormous amount of interest - but similar results and display as Google with some UI adjustments. Not paradigm shift..
