Industry Immersion Experience Program

What will I do for a job in the future? This is a BIG question! But also a very important one.

Getting ready for the world of work includes understanding who we are and what we value. We need to know why we work but also who we would like work for. The Industry Immersion Experience Program will help you in researching future careers and perhaps life options!

What is an Industry Immersion Experience? An Industry Immersion Experience is an opportunity to actively engage in a morning, an afternoon or a day on site in industry. It is an opportunity to see how industry operates to give you a better understanding of the world of work in order to help you make decisions about future subjects, courses and training. You will be able to hear directly from Managers, CEOs and staff regarding areas of current and future skills needs in industry, as well as ask questions about working in the industry. You can find out ‘first hand’ what skills and training are required and what employers look for when recruiting. The Industry Immersion Experience Program is an ideal opportunity to gather information to help you with your future career and pathway planning.

What can I do to prepare for an Industry Immersion Experience? It’s a great idea to do your own research in order to help you formulate questions you can ask on the day. Conduct a web search of the company you are going to visit. What do you think might be some of the careers that exist in that industry? What do you want to know about those careers? What is it like for the people that work in those positions? Do they get to travel a lot? Do they work long hours? Do they sometimes have to work at night? How long did it take them to find a job in the industry? What was the first job they ever did and what did they learn from that job that helps them in the role they have now? There are many questions you could ask that will help you decide whether it is an area you would like to research further.

Classroom Based Industry Explorer

Activity #6

Each Industry Immersion Experience features activities to build your skills and knowledge about work in this industry. Your teacher will take you through these activities back at school.

Activity A (designed for Levels 7 & 8)MEDIA ARTS – Media Arts Practices

With a partner visit the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) website at:www.ngv.vic.gov.au

Under the WHAT’S ON tab you will find the current visiting exhibitions.

With your partner you will need to create a 3 minute video advertisement for the internet that showcases the highlights of these exhibitions. You will need to consider what your client, the NGV, would like to focus on to draw audiences to the gallery.

Using a story boarding template (A3, hand drawn), sketch out your ideas including what artworks you will feature. Remember to think about the size of each frame. Will you use a wide shot, a mid shot or a close up? Will you use a panning shot or utilise a drone? You will need to include additional elements in your advertisement such as a script, music and possibly sound effects.

Once competed, as a pair present and ‘pitch’ your idea to the class.

Activity B (designed for Levels 9 & 10)DRAMA – Respond & Interpret

Visit the Arts Centre Melbourne website at:www.artscentremelbourne.com.au

Choose a production under the WHAT’S ON tab.

You are going to create a presentation or ‘pitch’ to an overseas executive theatre board, to convince them to fund an international tour of that show. You will be advocating for the power that drama has in changing the way audiences think. For this you will need to consider the following:

What are the social and cultural themes in this production? This could include indigenous themes, LGBTQI themes, refugee themes, or themes based around war.

How are they represented in the production?

How are they designed to influence the way an audience thinks?

What are the messages the production aims to share with audiences?

Why is this production important?

You can use images, make casting suggestions in your pitch but you must also consider budget. Is Tom Cruise too expensive for the lead role?

Present your ‘pitch’ to the board (your class). Will they book a season?
