Creating True Scale Map Books with AutoCAD Map 3D 2009

The Map Book function has been a Part of Map 3D since the early days of ADE.  In the last several releases the functionality has become very robust and a whole lot easier to use due to the Sheet Set Manager and a Wizard.  That being said, there is one piece of the Map Books that can cause you to go nuts and many folks it seems just give up… setting a % Overlap value and still getting a scaled map books. The key is in the Map Book  template (.dwt).  The following is a tutorial on how to properly set up a map book template to produce a properly scaled Map Book set (and stop ramming your head against your desk). 

 

   

First let’s discuss the % Overlap setting

 

% Overlap actually scales your viewport by the value and does NOT compensate for the Scale you set the viewport to be.  THIS IS THE KEY #1 

That being said, your scale affects the Viewport in your Map Book .dwt file. The Viewport has to be created to match the desired scale of the Map Book compared to the size of your Map Book Grid. To be successful in scale you must create the Grid (in model space) and use the “Custom” Tiling option. Do not use the “By Area” and “By Number” Tiling Options. THIS IS KEY #2 

In order to create an appropriately sized Viewport you have to do a little math:

Yes, I also think AutoCAD is supposed to be doing the Math for us, but alas, human intervention is still alive and necessary! Let’s break down the equation…  

In this example assume we have created a 1 mile by 1 mile grid and we want the scale to be 300 with a 5% overlap (24in x 24in plot): 

1. Viewport Height

The Viewport size will need to be exactly 18.48 x 18.48 inches to plot to scale. 

 

In the next example assume we have created a 6000ft by 4000ft grid and we want the scale to be 500 with a 7% overlap (11in x 17in plot):

The Viewport size will need to be exactly 12.84 x 8.56 inches to plot to scale. 

The Process (step by step tutorial) 

Now we will walk through the process of setting up a Map Book that will plot true to scale in Map 3D 2009. We will use the second example from above that uses a 6000x4000ft grid, a scale of 500, and a 3% Overlap. 

The Template 

The process for building a template is well documented in the help file.  In this example we will use one of the predefined Map Book Templates that ship with AutoCAD Map 3D 2009. 

1. Open Map Book Template ‐ 11x17 Classic.dwt from the template directory (typically found in C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD Map 3D 2009\R17.2\enu\Template):   

 2. Now go into Page Setup Manager and specify your PLOT settings, these settings are used in the 

Map Book Publish functions later on and affect the printable area of your sheet which in turn 

affects the size of your Title Block and Viewport.

 3. Select the existing Viewport and Erase it:  

 

   

4. Create a new Viewport (MV) using the Viewport Equation:  a. Length:

c.  d. Use 0,0 for the lower left corner of the viewport and then used Relative Coordinate 

Entry @12.36,8.24 to establish the upper right.  

e. Now just move the viewport into place and adjust the title block elements as necessary. 

 

The Map Book template requires “Placeholders” that define what elements to use for what purpose in the creation of the Map Book. 

5. In the Map Book tab of the Task Pane Click the Tools button and choose “Identify Template Placeholders…”

 6. In the Identify… dialog box: 

a. Highlight the “Main Viewport”

 b. Click the “Select Placeholder(s)>>” button and select the new Viewport. 

c. Press Enter to finish the selection (the info box should now read 1 selected): 

 d. Close the Identify… dialog box. 

7. Save the template as (SAVEAS) True Scale Map Book Practice.dwt :

 

8. Click OK on the Template Options dialog box: 

 9. Close the drawing. 

The Map Book 

The process for building a Map Book is also well documented in the help file.  In this example you can use any existing drawing as long as it has a 6000x4000ft grid. This is KEY #3 the grid has to be composed of Closed Polylines, nothing else will work.  

1. Open a map (the map can contain dwg objects or FDO connection or both): 

 2. Create the grid. Make a single rectangle 6000x4000 for this example and use Copy/Paste or 

Rectangular Array  to build out the grid. You can also import an existing grid by querying the drawing, using the Insert command, or importing a file.  In this example I have imported a .shp 

file obtained from the GIS department. 

 3. In the Task Pane (MAPWSPACE> On) click on the Map Books tab. 4. Click the New button and choose Map Book: 

 5. In the Map Book Wizard: 

a. Source>> Model Space – Give the Map Book the name 11x17 500 Scale, you can have multiple map books in a drawing (different sizes and/or scales):

 b. Sheet Template>> Settings – This is where half of the action occurs! 

• In the “Choose a Sheet Template:” box Browse to the template we created o C:\Documents and Settings\mcknelj\Local Settings\Application 

Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD Map 3D 2009\R17.2\enu\Template\True Scale Map Book Practice 11x17.dwt 

• From the “Choose a Layout:” dropdown select Ansi B (this is the name of the Layout tab in the .dwt). 

• Under “Layout Options” o “Include a Title block (name or file)” select Title Block (name of the 

block in the .dwt). 

o “Include Adjacent sheet links (name or file)” select Adjacent_Arrow_4  (name of the block in the .dwt, if you do not want to use Adjacent Sheet Links uncheck the box) 

• In the “Scale Factor” set the scale factor as 500 (this is what we designed our Viewport for in the .dwt, the scale factor of the .dwt has no effect on this number). 

 

c. Tiling Scheme>> Custom – This is the other half of the action occurs! 

• Select Tiles>> ‐ select the Closed Polygons (remember Key #3) of your Grid 

• % overlay of each tile ‐ Set this to 3 (this is what we designed the Viewport for in the .dwt, it will not allow decimals) 

• Skip any empty tiles – set this if you like, it does what it says! 

 

d. Naming Scheme>> Data Driven – Select the Data Driven Radio button (since I used a Grid that was imported from a .shp file from the GIS department I will use the Grid Object Data that is attached to the Closed Polylines, see Object Data in the help file). If you do not have attached data use the Sequential Radio Button as the other two options do not work for custom grids. 

• Click the “Expression Chooser…” button. • Expand “Object Data” • Expand the appropriate Object Data Table • Select the appropriate Object Data Field  

 

e. Key>> Layers – If your map contains .dwg elements choose the layers you want to see in the overview map, if using FDO select layer 0 to see the FDO data.  Click the “Add Layers for Map Key” button to add the layers. The other options are documented in the help file.  

 f. Legend and Sheet Set – accept the defaults for these options. Review the help file to 

discover what they do and how to set them up. 

g. Click the “Preview Tiles >>” button to make sure the tiles were select correctly. 

 h. Click the “Generate” button to create the Map Book:  

The number of tiles created will determine the time it takes to generate the Map Book.  The generation process does several things: 

1. Adds the Naming Scheme and Views to each Grid Tile. 2. Creates a Layout for each Grid Tile. 

a. Sets the view, scale and % Overlap for the Viewport. b. Adds the intelligence to the Adjacent Sheet Links. 

c. Sets the view for the Key View and highlights the appropriate Grid Tile (Key View uses another viewport). 

d. Sets the view for the Legend (also a viewport). 3. Creates and AutoCAD Sheet Set. 

 

The Result 

Now that you have successfully created a True Scale Map Book you need to test your results, but first let’s take a look at what was created. 

Note: if you do not see the Grid Numbers in the Map Book tab fo the Task Pane pick the down arrow at the top of the tab to select from your saved Map Books… 

 

Intelligent Grid Tiles – Double click on a Grid Number in the Map Book tab to zoom to that Grid. All view scales are retained in FDO data, so you only see what you expect to see. 

 

Automatically Generated Layouts – Right click on a Grid Number in the Map Book tab to zoom to that Layout. All view scales are retained in FDO data, so you only see what you expect to see at the Layout Scale. 

 

Click the “Quick View Layouts” button (in red below) at the bottom of your AutoCAD Map 3D 2009 screen to reveal the generated layouts: 

 

Publish the Map Book to DWF or a Plotter – Right click on the Map Book name at the top of the Grid Numbers to open an options menu. Select “Publish to DWF…” or “Publish to Plotter” to publish the entire Map Book based on the settings in the .dwt file (set above in the .dwt creation). 

 

 

Plot a Single Layout – When you have zoomed to a layout use the PLOT command to print that Layout. Once printed put your scale on it and prove that you are a genius! 

 

Now that you have successfully plotted a Map Book to scale, go to Disneyland… You deserve it!
