•Most students belong to a minority group:• ± half of our students are Hispanic
•Avg student age = 27 years•1,100 faculty:• 350 FT : 750 PT
•NM has 20 % poverty rate:• average income in mid 40K’s

• Debates on:• Cost of textbooks, student debts, student dropout
• Sustainability of OER and its challenges

• OER software based on this research
• I recommend the OpenStax A&P books to my students as:• a second textbook

• OpenStax presents on Faculty Focus Day• VP appoints me as contact person for OpenStax and other OER

• I create OER lists for all faculty:• For as many subjects as possible• Update list every few months • Peaks faculty’s interest
•OpenStax in Library:• OpenStax books are added to our Digital Library• Librarians help inform students of free OpenStax textbooks

Educate Faculty about CC Licenses
• Faculty had many inquiries about Creative Commons licenses:
• Faculty member offers workshop on how to access and use CC BY content.
• Librarian presents on various copyright types on Faculty Focus Day.
• Librarian becomes appointed Copyright Specialist and, to this day, continues to educate faculty about copyrights. Crucial!
• iPad Workshops:• Provide perfect opportunities to introduce faculty to
free digital textbooks. • Mobile device use is rampant!!• Students and faculty expect easy access to
textbooks and other resources via mobile phones, tablets and laptops.

Spread the Word!
• Offer interview about OER Initiative to:• College Paper• Marketing Department:
• Request for interview to be published on public college website
• Educate parents/grandparents/friends about OER:
• Provide OpenStax link as well as other OER links.
Make Adoption Easier
• Encourage faculty to become reviewers and editors:
• If a colleague has reviewed a book, we tend to be more open to adopt that book.
• Our Faculty Senate has adjusted instructions for textbook adoption to be OER inclusive.
Lead by Example!
• Our adoption rate increased from 2.5 % to 12.2 % in less than 1 year!
• Number of our adoptions is still going up, especially in sciences.
