OUR SERVICE Our mission is to be the most trusted supplier of excavation safety solutions and with this comes an exceptional customer service experience.

We provide national coverage through our network of 11 depots and our in-house transport fleet of over 65 vehicles gives us the flexibility to meet our customers needs. The hire and sale of our products is fully supported by our team of qualified engineers, experienced technical sales representatives, hire desk and operational staff. Our depots provide the focal point for service delivery.

ENGINEERING DESIGN SERVICESOur Engineering Team provides a comprehensive temporary works design service in support of the hire and sale of our products. In addition, we offer a bespoke design service to assist clients with technical tender submissions for major projects; including basement propping and other large scale excavations.

The team, based at our Engineering Centre in Astley, comprises of over 35 qualified civil, structural and mechanical engineers who produce over 7000 temporary works designs per year. MGF have achieved Level 2 Supply Chain BIM Compliance and we are constantly striving to enhance our digital capability further through our in-house development team.

TRANSPORTWe operate our own transport fleet yielding logistical control of our operations and flexibility to respond rapidly to meet customer delivery requirements. Our drivers are CPC qualified, receive NPORS accredited Slinger/Signaller training and product awareness training, which is particularly important on collection of equipment as they are able to take a proactive approach to loss management.

We have FORS (Fleet Operators Recognition Scheme) Bronze level accreditation for our entire fleet and are working towards Silver and Gold. We are also nearing full compliance with the CLOCS standard (Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety).

SAFETY IS OUR PHILOSOPHY MGF place health and safety at the forefront of everything we do and are committed to the promotion of best practice in the industry, meaning that we are best placed to assist you to create safe working environments for your employees on site making it easy to adopt best practice in excavation safety.

MANUFACTURING We design and manufacture our core range of shoring products in-house to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 3 & BS EN ISO 3834-3. Our in-house capability provides in-depth product knowledge, flexibility to meet demand and the ability to undertake bespoke manufacture to meet customer requirements.

Anti-skid

MGF provide steel road plates with four handling points in either plain steel or with anti-skid surfacing, available in 2.4m x 1.2m and 1.2m x 1.2m panels. Road plates are designed to cover trenches in carriageways.

Steel road plates are extremely heavy, a lifting plan must be in place prior to commencing works. It is the customers’ responsibility to ensure that no one carrying out the works puts themselves in danger throughout the process.

At no point should the road plate be transportedusing the bucket and blade of the excavator.

Prior to commencing any work it is recommended to read “Traffic Advisory Leaflet 6/14: Using Road Plates at Road Works” Published by the Department for Transport.

The location must be assessed for suitability prior to installation.If road plates are used to bridge over a shored trench, the additional loads induced by the trafficmust be taken into account in the shoring design.

If chocks are not available, then the plates must be individually prised apart to gain access to the lifting eyes.

Ideally timber chocks should be placed in between road plates when offloading from the vehicle to the ground.

A jimmy bar should be inserted under the top plate to prise the plate up, a timber chock shouldthen be carefully inserted so a lifting chain can be attached to the lifting point.

Great care should be taken during this operation to ensure that hands or fingers do not get trapped between the plates.

It is recommended that 2 people perform this operation.

Once each chain hook is connected to the 4-corner lifting points the road plate can be carefully moved to where it is to be installed.

Place road plate on timber chocks. Ensure the plates are supported by at least 500mm of earth and sufficient bedding material on each side.

The lifting chains can now be removed from one sides lifting points.

Ensure trip hazards have been removed. A jimmy bar should now be inserted between the plate and the ground to take the weight of the plate while the timber chock is removed.

Ensure this is done safely. The plate can then be carefully lowered, and this action can be repeated on the other side of the road plate.

If the plates are recessed, then ensure that any gaps between the road plate and the ground are suitably backfilled.

If the plates are raised, then the customer is to ensure a suitable means of transition is implemented if required.

The customer is to ensure that the plates are suitably anchored down to suit underlying ground type. Each time a panel is replaced it may be necessary to replace the bedding material.

Ensure that traffic only passes over the plates in one direction at any given time and be sure that only a single vehicle has contact with any plate at once.

To remove the panels firstly remove all ground anchors.

Using a jimmy bar prise one end of the road plate up and insert a timber chock underneath, repeat this with the other side.(SEE I)

Once both lifting points are accessible attach a 4 leg chain and lift the road plate and place ontimber chock, either in a suitable storage area or directly onto a vehicle bed.

What is a standard solution?

A standard solution is a pre-engineered, calculated solution for specification by the customer through their own temporary works process.

Over recent years MGF has experienced an exponential growth in design requests and customer demands for faster turnaround times.

The MGF Design Team embarked on a research project to find ways to further support our customers and continue to deliver a high quality service; whilst fully complying with the latest safety legislation and design standards.

Research found that 60% of the designs produced showed similarities, so there was scope to create pre-engineered BS5975 compliant solutions which can be used on projects with repetitive groundwork operations.

MGF have now produced a suite of standard solutions that cover a range of products covering trench boxes, manhole boxes, walers and sheets and our GRiPSHORE ® range.

A simple to assemble two-sided, hydraulic bracing system designed for use with steel trench sheets to horizontally brace small trenches for the safe installation of utilities. The complete system can support trench widths of 0.6m to 6.0m and is normally installed using an excavator.

EMVs reduce the cohesion of soils through vibrations, which effectively fluidises the soil.
