The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We work with over 100 countries in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Last year we reached over 80 million people directly and 791 million people overall including online, broadcasts and publications. We make a positive contribution to the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust. Founded in 1934 we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body. We receive 15 per cent core funding grant from the UK government.

We established a presence in Korea in August 1973. Our cultural relations work has over the years brought Korea and the UK closer to each other through partnerships in English, the arts, education and society. We have expanded our English work as the demand for English has grown. We currently operate seven teaching centres in Seoul and organise training programmes to support English language teaching in Korea in schools, colleges and universities. Our aim is to help students improve their English for the purposes of work, study, social and daily use and assist teachers with in-service professional development. We also provide opportunities for people to sit IELTS, Aptis, professional and school exams.

We have in place the British Council's global ‘Quality assurance program’ which ensures our teaching services meet high standards.

Through our TLR (Teaching and Learning Review) system, we assess our teaching quality and standardise it across the British Council language centres all around the world.

Teachers peer-observe and get feedback from each other regularly to standardise and improve teaching quality.

Managers regularly come into the classroom to observe and give feedback to our teachers and evaluate teachers against the British Council teaching skills.

Teachers attend two training sessions per month in-house where they can focus on current and new teaching methods and approaches.
