Challenges to engineering education in Vietnam• Little inspiration and incentive from early on• Family• School• Society
• Perceived high costs• For schools• For students
Challenges to engineering education in Vietnam• Gender factor• Traditional thinking: girls not naturally fit for engineering
• Job environment unfavorable to engineers• Gaps between school training and actual job environment: 2 extremes• Inadequate training => needs retraining• Adequate training but engineers have to compromise under pressure
from corrupt practices
Some suggestions
• Raise awareness about engineering: communication and outreach efforts
• Recruiting more girls into engineering by both educating society, including girls themselves, and positive discrimination
• Better public and corporate policies to protect and incentivize engineers who uphold professional integrity
Contributions by private sector
• HEEAP activities
• Company exhibit/museum
• Internship programs
• Sharing employer best practices (Best employer for engineers award)
