Student Action for V a l u e E d u c a t i o n (SAVE)

Working with Senior Citizens Associations

It is imperative that right education and values be inculcated within children early in life for them to be sensitive to the needs of the elderly. Keeping this i n m i n d , H e l p A g e launched its Student A c t i o n f o r V a l u e Education programme. The 3 main goals of SAVE are: To Inculcate values of care & respect for the elderly in children, to prepare today's children & youth for their old age and to create an age-friendly society. HelpAge is working closely with schools and educational institutions urging them to show their support and advocate for the cause of the elderly.

HelpAge India recognizes the potential of the senior citizens and is involving them in various activities. Seminars are organized by HelpAge in conjunction with Senior Citizens Associations (SCAs) across the country on National Policy on Older Persons, Maintenance & Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens Act (2007) and other relevant elderly issues for better advocacy of their rights and entitlements, urging Government and decision makers for quicker action. Senior citizens are now feeling empowered to raise their voice & take action on issues concerning them.

Creating an Environment for Change

elpAge has been working towards integrating it's programmes and services and consciously moving from welfare towards development. Advocacy for the H

rights of the elderly has gained immense momentum and HelpAge is working closely with the Government and Senior Citizens Associations across states to bring about changes at the policy level.

A composite response to senior citizens needs across urban areas, are HelpAge India's Agecare Service Hubs which provide customized services such as: a helpline facility, physiocare, recreation activities, a tea/coffee corner, assistive devices, healthcare, a library, computer literacy, discounted services, servicing homes for the aged, opportunities for active ageing, volunteering and working with Senior Citizens Associations. The Hubs located in more than 20 states provide a vital support system for many elders. In addition, more than 40 physiotherapy clinics 'Fitness & Wellness Centres' have been established in the country in partnership with Senior Citizens Associations.

HelpAge's Mobile Medicare Unit (MMU) service brings not just basic healthcare to the door steps of the needy elderly, but also in some areas provides alternative care, through yoga & meditation classes, shelter assistance, disability aids, counseling and conducts multi-specialty camps and home visits to bedridden elderly. Each MMU vehicle is manned with a qualified doctor, pharmacist and a social worker. Medicines & treatment are dispensed free of cost. In 2010 - 11, 10 lakh treatments were meted out, spread over 840 locations in 29 states, through more than 70 MMUs.

With age, it is important one takes extra care of one’s health, a little care and caution can prevent or delay many disabilities. HelpAge has opened physiocare centres across the nation, helping many elders walk again and continue with their basic daily act iv i t ies without being dependent on others.

Palliative Care is the care of patients and their families, by a team of trained professionals at a time when the patient's disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment and life expectancy is

relatively short. HelpAge is running Community Managed Palliative Care projects in 52 villages spread across the districts of Cuddalore & Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Kollam district in Kerala.

For the want of a simple eye operation many elderly can't even see the smile on the faces of their loved ones and become entirely dependent on others for their sustenance. More than 80% of the 12 million blind people in India, can't

see due to cataract. HelpAge India conducts thousands of free cataract surgeries for the elderly every year.

Other specialized care projects are also underway for Alzheimer and Cancer patients.

Through this programme the destitute elderly are provided basic ration, daily use articles, clothing and some money to sustain themselves through the year. Today, these elderly live with dignity & independence.

HelpAge launched its first Elder Helpline in Chennai in 2004. These Helplines address problems of elders such as isolation, neglect, facilitate emergency responses, counsel them, provide information on access to various elderly schemes and linkages with the government, police and referral rescue & relief services. Today, Elder Helplines running across the country serve as lifelines for many elderly.

HelpAge's income generation & micro-credit schemes aim to restore pride and dignity to thousands of elderly making them financially self-sufficient and independent. It enables them to look after themselves and their family and keeps their self respect intact.
