CREATING A CHARITABLE LEGACYTaking care of the future, today.Creating a charitable legacy can be one of life’s most lasting and altruistic acts. The Denver Foundation is proud to partner with hundreds of committed individuals who have taken the step to include philanthropy in their estate planning.

We’ve helped generations of generous people to plan their personal philanthropic legacies, from creating a bequest that supports the causes that you care about most to establishing a scholarship at a school to leaving a gift to our permanent endowment, The Fund for Denver, that allows the Foundation to meet the most critical needs in the community over time.

The Denver Foundation offers you the ability to create a charitable legacy that honors your commitments and allows them to live on in perpetuity. We can help you define your vision and choose the giving option that best aligns with that vision.

1 DONOR-ADVISED FUND

A donor-advised fund is a charitable giving account created by an individual or family and used to support charitable causes recommended by the donors and their successors. This option provides great flexibility for giving during your lifetime and allows you to leave the gift of philanthropy to future generations.

2 DESIGNATED FUND

A designated fund provides support to your favorite charitable organizations in perpetuity, or over a set number of years. With an endowed designated fund, you can be confident that your gift will provide a lasting legacy to sustain your favorite nonprofits. Should an organization you’ve designated cease to exist, the Foundation will ensure that the funds are redirected to an organization meeting your charitable intent so that your generosity will continue to benefit the community in the way that you envisioned.

3 FIELD OF INTEREST FUND

A field of interest fund allows you to make an impact in specific fields over time. You identify a specific or broad interest area (such as education, the arts, or animal welfare) and The Denver Foundation ensures effective grantmaking within that field as the needs change over time. This type of fund allows your grantmaking to evolve as the needs within the field do, and gives you peace of mind knowing that The Denver Foundation will be there to identify the best nonprofits in the issue area you have selected to ensure your legacy lives on.

4 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

A scholarship fund offers you the opportunity to make education more accessible to students in our community. Scholarships allow you to meet your charitable objectives while providing the much-needed financial support for students to achieve their educational dreams. Choose a school, population, or other focus area to build the selection criteria for your scholarship and rest assured that it will have a significant impact. The Denver Foundation will walk you through the process to ensure the program meets your philanthropic intent.

5 NAMED ENDOWED FUND

A named endowed fund within the Fund for Denver is the engine that fuels The Denver Foundation’s annual support to leading local nonprofit organizations and honors the names of generous and visionary individuals over many generations. These funds allow The Denver Foundation to meet the changing needs of the community now and for generations to come and are used with great diligence and attention.

ON THE COVER: STELLA YU AND DAVID GRIGGSAs part of their estate plan, Stella Yu and David Griggs will give their beautiful, art- and light-filled home in the Santa Fe Arts District to the neighborhood itself. They will donate the building to Metropolitan State University, which will, in turn, use the building in service of the arts for at least ten years.Cover Photo: Stella and David were photographed in their home in March 2018.

We believe that our community is only a community if people care. One way the Kawanabe family cares for the community is through a tradition of annual holiday giving. Every year, they budget an amount to give and decide as a family where to make gifts, giving each family member an equal voice in the collaborative process.

Irene and Ken Kawanabes’ estate plan includes the creation of a donor-advised fund for their children to manage, allowing them to keep the philanthropic tradition alive. Their two daughters are fifth-generation Coloradans.

“The Denver Foundation’s track record of wisely investing monies, combined with staff expertise of community needs, make the Foundation the right steward for us,” says Kenzo.

The Denver Foundation is pleased to be able to provide a vehicle for “passing the philanthropic baton” from one generation to the next through multi-generational donor-advised funds.

LEGACY GIFTSThe Denver Foundation accepts a variety of planned gifts.

BEQUESTS The simplest way to leave a planned gift to benefit our community is to make a bequest by including specific language in your will or living trust naming a fund or the Foundation as the recipient of a testamentary gift.

The Denver Foundation has experience managing a wide-range of estate assets. We would be happy to provide sample language to include in your will or trust.

RETIREMENT PLAN DONATIONS Naming The Denver Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement funds, such as an IRA, 401k or 403b, is a simple and effective way to benefit the community while avoiding significant, often unanticipated, tax penalties.

LIFE INSURANCE DONATIONS Among the many ways to donate life insurance, the simplest is to designate The Denver Foundation as a beneficiary of the policy. You may also transfer ownership of a paid-up policy to the Foundation, donate insurance policy dividends, or choose to name the Foundation as a designated owner and beneficiary.

TRUSTS AND OTHER GIVING VEHICLESIf you have questions about Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, Charitable Lead Trusts, or other giving vehicles, please call 303.300.1790 and ask to speak to a member of the Philanthropic Services Group.

There was always room for a few extra guests at Sunday dinner in Barbara Berv’s childhood home. Her father wanted his children to meet and break bread with people of different backgrounds, to learn what they thought and believed, especially after the family moved from north Denver to a less racially diverse neighborhood.

“We went to Wellshire Presbyterian Church and there would often be someone from outside the US at the service,” says Barbara. “My father would approach the person and ask, ‘How would you like to join us for chicken dinner?

“If you don’t live in a place with diversity, you have to make it happen,” Barbara recalls her dad saying. In their household, a stranger from the grocery store often turned into a new friend. That way of looking at the world, with empathy, curiosity and care for others, planted a seed for Barbara’s career with nonprofits as well as her own philanthropy.

Similarly, Barbara’s husband Dan can trace a lifelong interest in social justice to personal experiences. A native of New York City and graduate of New York University, he grew up around people of all backgrounds.

Dan eventually headed west after a few years as a young professional in New York City. He and Barbara met, married, and raised their children in Denver. Together, their lives have centered around their shared passion for public education, the arts, youth-serving organizations, and their church.

Dan is an accomplished artist who shows his work at local art shows and in his studio in the Golden Triangle neighborhood. Barbara is a third-generation Coloradan whose career led her into the corporate and nonprofit sectors.

As members of our Community Legacy Society, the Bervs plan an estate gift to the Foundation’s Fund for Denver, which will help meet the needs of the future. The instinct to do so is rooted in both of their pasts.

“As a Denver native, I’ve seen a lot of changes in the community. The needs are different from when I was a kid,” she says. “The needs will be different after I am gone. I know that donor support allows the Foundation to meet changing needs for years to come.”

COMMUNITY LEGACY SOCIETYWhen you name The Denver Foundation or your charitable fund in your will, you know that your hard-earned assets will go on in perpetuity, allowing future generations to benefit from your success, passion, and generosity.

You also become a part of the Community Legacy Society – the Foundation’s group that honors those who have taken the extraordinary step to include us in their estate plans.

Members are invited to informational events about issues in our community and are recognized for their forward-thinking gifts. You can also choose to remain anonymous – the amount of recognition you receive is completely up to you.

As a community foundation, The Denver Foundation has a unique window into the generosity that has helped to make our region what it is today – from the benefactors in our past, to the generous donors of today, to the thoughtful commitments of individuals for the future.
