Client

Aricent SolutionAricent developed a pre-integrated 5G software framework using 5G New Radio (5G NR) to ensure the client had 5G

technology by supporting non-standalone deployment mode.

Aricent provided Dual Connectivity feature support on gNodeB (gNB) so that there was no requirement for a new

next-generation core (NGC) entity. The master radio access network (RAN) is an LTE eNB connected to an evolved

packet core (EPC). The secondary RAN is gNB with only a S1-U connection to the EPC and Xn interface with LTE eNB.

The new Xn interface interconnects gNBs that are connected to the 5G core network.

Aricent’s 5G gNB solution was comprised of:

– Layer3+ (radio resource control (RRC) protocol and support for new Xn-C, a Xn control plane interface).

– 5G radio resource management (RRM) module and 5G operations, administration and management (OAM)

modules, which support dual connectivity of the client Master eNodeB (MeNB) with the Secondary eNodeB (SeNB).

Aricent committed a dedicated team of developers to the client to engineer the gNB solution, integrate the client MeNB

node and provide the API interface for the client’s 5G Layer 2+ (L2+) module with Aricent’s 5G Layer 3+ (L3+) module.

Aricent enhanced its 5G L3+ solution to include the new interface by implementing an adaptation layer of 5G L3+

modules to interface with the client’s 5G L2+ protocol of gNB (medium access control (MAC), radio link control (RLC),

packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) and GPRS tunnelling protocol user interface (GTPuI)).

Aricent worked closely with the client to integrate and verify the Aricent 5G L3+ modules with the client’s L2+ modules

on target 5G hardware with the client’s LTE eNodeB and EPC.

ChallengesThe client was looking for 5G Trial in the field within stipulated time and hence time-to-market was critical for Aricent to

provide 5G-enabled services.

The client wanted a partner that was willing and able to own the development of the 5G feature on the existing LTE

software framework infrastructure instead of building new infrastructure.

The trial needed a cost-optimized solution and software design that could be scaled up to support additional 5G

deployments.

Client BenefitsSignificant reduction in the cost of 5G development with pre-integrated, feature-complete, fully tested 5G L3+ module

software.

On-time delivery of a high-quality solution that gave the client a time-to-market advantage.

First mover advantage to support future 5G deployment scenarios as the extended team of experts from both Aricent and

the client are available to work on 5G technology challenges as 3GPP rolls out the 5G specifications.

The client is a leading Asian Tier 1 networking and telecommunications original equipment manufacturer

(OEM). The company manufactures and sells networking hardware, telecommunications equipment and

associated high technology products and services.
