Executive summary of audit report

Comfit Composite Knit Ltd. is located at Goraiখ Mirzapurখ Tangailখ Dhakaখ Bangladesh. Total land area occupied by factory 870খ000 square feet whereproduction area is about 182খ331 square feet. Warehouse area is about 36খ963 square feet.

The factory was established in the year of 2006 specialized in Knit Items. Main production processes includes knittingখ dyeing & finishingখ cuttingখ printingখsewingখ finishing & packing. On the audit dayখ there were total 3খ968 employees in the factory of which 3খ539 employees were production workers.

The facility consists of two buildings & five sheds. Buildings & sheds descriptions are as follow:

Building- 01 (6 storied): Ground floor is occupied by knitting section 1st floor is occupied by cutting section 2nd to 4th floor are occupied by sewing sectionখ packing section & finishing section. 5th floor is occupied by sewing sectionখ packing sectionখ finishing section. Roof top tin shed & 35% open area.

Building- 02 (1 storied): Generatorখ boiler & air cooling room.

Shed 1: Dyeing & dyeing finishing section. Shed 2: Adminখ store & printing section. Shed 3: Central store & chemical store. Shed 4: Pump house & compressor. Shed 5: Dining hallখ canteenখ medical centerখ child care room & sample section.

ETP and WTP are in open space

Based on documents reviewখ management and worker interviewখ wages are paid monthly in cash. The regular working hours are from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM withone hour lunch break. There are three shifts for knittingখ dyeing & dyeing finishing section & security guard: : Shift A: 6:00 AM to 2:00 PMখ Shift B: 2:00 PM to10:00 PM & Shift C: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Normal working days are from Saturday to Thursday.

During the current auditখ payroll records from April 2015 to March 2016 and attendance records from April 2015 to March 2016 were provided for review. Theauditor selected 40 samples from March 2016 (recent month)খ 40 samples from September 2015 (random month) and 40 samples from April 2015 (initialmonth) for review.

b) The facility calculate remuneration quick scan prior to the audit.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT:The overall observations shows that the factory has ensure and pay all kinds remuneration to the workers as per law. All workers were provided withwritten and understandable information about their employment conditions with respect to wages before they enter employment and about theparticulars of their wages for each pay period. The factory pays the wages within 7 working days of the following month. Moreoverখ the overallcompliance level of the factory was found complete and consistent except one deviation was noted on living wages issue. AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT:The overall observation shows that the factory has a working hour policy posted in all prominent places in the premises. As per records provided by the factoryখ the factory useselectronic system to track the workers daily in and out time. As per working hour policyখ the highest working hours is 12 hours/day with 4 hour overtime and 72 hours/week which iswithin the legal limit of working hours. The maximum continuous working days were noted 6 days. Howeverখ some problem identified in 6.2 & 6.4

Performance Area 10 : No Precarious Employment

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT:The overall observation shows that the facility follows all the requirement of local law related to employment. Copy of appointment letterখ ID card andservice book is given to all the regular workers immediately upon joining. During the employees’ interviewখ all interviewed employees stated that theysign labor contracts with the facility and they have obtained the copies of their labor contracts prior joining. These labor contracts were in the locallanguage. AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT:The overall observation shows that the factory has maintained a proper record keeping system and was provided all necessary documents to theaudit team for review. Currently the management has a policy on ‘business ethics and anti-corruptions’ which is posted in all prominent places in thepremises and was communicated to the employees through awareness program and notice boards.
