Pursuing Innovation3M Company has long encouraged employees to pursue ideas and
concepts that might, at first, seem unusual or odd to some people.
From those efforts, many innovations were born.
In the late 1930s, one of 3M’s scientists Al Boese began a journey to
develop an inexpensive, noncorrosive backing that was fibrous, but not
woven, for electrical tape. The journey took him through a decade of
learning and experimentation that did not produce a better backing for
electrical tape, but did lead to an amazing series of products using the
new technology. Al Boese retired in the 1980s, however, the journey
he started continues today: 3M is still finding new ways to refine and
apply the nonwoven materials.
Making the ConnectionOne of the most successful uses of the 3M non-woven technology
is the 3M personal respirator. The challenge for the product design
is to protect individuals, while also allowing maximum comfort and
breathability. The innovation required to do this was years of R&D
research, resulting in a fundamental base for 3M HVAC air filters.
It was the same principle, stop unwanted particles but maximizing
airflow.
“Breathable” FiltrationToday, 3M is arguably considered the world’s leading
expert on “breathable” synthetic-based filtration
products. For 3M HVAC air filters, this means
filtration with best in class pressure drops and
lightweight media, analogous to the design criteria
for personal respirators.

Building managers and HVAC engineers often face a fine balance of finding the best air filter solution
for the building and keeping their operating budgets in check. Meeting environmental requirements for
buildings is becoming increasingly important too.
Energy consumption related to HVAC systems is a significant component of the overall energy
consumption required to operate a building. Using energy efficient air handlers is one step towards
reducing those operational costs. Choosing the right HVAC replacement filters helps maximize those
savings opportunities.
The greater the ability of a filter to load with debris without substantial increase in pressure drop, the
greater the possible energy savings. HVAC engineers typically look for filters that have a low initial
pressure drop, high filter loading capacity and the minimum required particle capture efficiency
required.
Filtration requirements, time constraints, energy, and sustainability efforts create a number
of decisions that have to be researched and analyzed. Using HVAC filter and air handling unit
performance data, 3M can help managers look for opportunities for improvement in associated Total
Cost of Ownership (TCO).
Focusing on opportunities to lower energy consumption, reduce filter maintenance time and reduce
waste stream volume, have provided favorable results.
Our Story
Technological Innovation Journey
Total Cost of Ownership
There are five components of the
ownership and operating cost of HVAC
filters: the cost to purchase the filters,
the cost of the associated energy use,
the cost of labor for installation and
replacement, the cost of disposal,
and the cost of shipping. Using 3M™
Commercial HVAC Filters may have a
positive impact on the ownership and
operating cost as a result of their low
pressure drop and their design for long
filter life. The Total Cost of Ownership
tool from 3M, for commercial HVAC
air filtration systems, can be utilized to
compare 3M Commercial HVAC Filters
with alternative filter options. 3M offers
complimentary filter evaluation services
to help in your decision-making.
V-Bank Filters
MERV A15MERV A14
MERV A13
3M™ Commercial HVAC V-Bank Filters MERV A13, MERV A14 and MERV A15 offer a unique combination of performance and design features including integral gaskets and nested pleat packs. These filters are an excellent choice for building owners and facility managers looking to reduce their energy utiliza-tion and minimize their total cost of operation, while still providing building occupants with high quality filtered air.
Using 3M technologies, these commercial HVAC filters offer an industry leading combination of low pressure drop, robust efficiency, longevity, low weight as well as unique design features. These design features include nested pleats for reduced pressure drop and highly engineered media with a precise balance of mechanical and electret characteristics. The robust efficiency of these filters is tested to the rigorous industry filter conditioning standard – ASHRAE 52.2: 2007 Appendix J.
3M™ V-Bank Filters are the only HVAC V-Bank filters that feature innovative integral gaskets. No other manufacturer offers this feature, which helps prevent unfiltered air from flowing past gaps between the filter and the filter rack. The integral gaskets from 3M are factory installed, which not only save time during installation, but ensure that gaskets will be used.
Key benefits
Potential for reduction in electrical energy consumption due to industry leading low initial pressure drop.
Filters with MERV 13 and greater ratings contribute to earning a point in the LEED certification process for new and existing buildings when used on all outside air intakes and inside air recirculation returns.
Filters with MERV A13 and A14 ratings meet the Facilities Guidelines Institutes (ANSI / ASHRAE / ASHE Standard 170 - 2013) requirements for hospitals and healthcare facilities where MERV 13 or 14 primary filters are required.
Long filter life, due to the unique combination of electret, depth-loading filtration media, the precision pleat structure and high filter media area.
Factory installed gaskets ensure correct installation and usage, resulting in consistent reduction of air bypass, as well as eliminating the need for additional labor to install gaskets on-site.
Due to their lightweight frame construction, 3M™ V-Bank Filters are easier to handle, transport, and install than many comparable V-Bank filters and metal box filters. Lighter weight is especially important when HVAC filters must be manually carried to the air handler.
3M V-Bank Filters are 100% synthetic, resulting in moisture and humidity resistant, corrosion free filters that do not support mold growth.
3M V-Bank Filters are 100% metal free and fully incinerable.
3M V-Bank Filters meet UL 900 flammability rating (US) and UL 900 Class 2 flammability rating (Canada).
Reverse Flow options are also available.

Mini-Pleat Filters, No Gasket
Key benefits
Increased air flow or lower fan energy consumption compared to equivalent filter design and efficiency of competitors
 Electrostatically charged, open construction media
Durable synthetic media and frame construction
 Long filter life
■• Media loads through the depth of the filter■• Mini-pleat construction provides high surface area Small Package Size — Easy to handle, low disposal volume, low shipping costs
 Demonstrated filtration efficiency
 Lightweight, rigid frame
■■ Low pressure drop for potential energy savings
■■ Long filter life
■■ Tough filter and frame construction resulting in low chance of filter damage during handling, installation or use in humid environments
100% Synthetic media-filters are very durable:• Lesschanceoffilterdamage
during handling and installation
• Resistanttomoistureand common chemicals
• Resistanttofibershedding
3M™ Commercial HVAC Filter MERV A8 and A12 Mini-Pleat Filters without Gaskets combine excellent filtration performance with low airflow resistance and long filter life in a cost effective construction. Their balance of properties may offer building owners and managers time and money savings.

High Air Flow (HAF) Filters
The open channel construction of 3M HAF filters offers low initial airflow resistance, while its unique micro-structure and electrostatic charge provides effective particle capture and retention. In certain applications, this may translate into fewer filter changeouts, reduced coil cleaning, and reduced maintenance costs.

A balanced approach to improved air filtration3M™ HAF Air Filters may offer an ideal alternative in applications where regular filter replacement is difficult or impractical, but where low airflow resistance is important.
Developed using innovative 3M technologies, 3M HAF Air Filters are frameless, self-supporting, and are constructed from an array of open flow channels. These filters are electrostatically charged for enhanced particle capture and retention.
3M HAF Air Filters are available with an antimicrobial agent to help inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the filter media. Users should be aware that mold and mildew may grow on captured particles that build up over time on the filter.
