The caller ID on the phone said Comcast, so the resident thought it was valid. It was not! The fake Comcast Representative connected to the resident’s computer and wiped out the operating system. Beware of any calls like this and know that Comcast will not call you to report an internet issue. If you receive a call from Comcast and want to validate it, hang up and call Comcast Customer Service at 855-510-1609. And then there were the Lake Barr ington Shores Veterans .
The recent ly re t i red Army Genera l , who res ides here at LBS , was rev iewing a f asc inat ing
br ie f ing he rece ived f rom the Jo int Chie f s of Sta f f conducted at the Pentagon . The
br ie f ing was about “F ight ing the Long War : a st rategy to combat Al -Qaeda ” . A f r i end and
ne ighbor , an ex -Navy pi lo t , s topped by fo r a v i s i t . The Genera l showed him the br ie f ing
and the pi lo t asked i f the Genera l would present th i s br ie f ing to a group of LBS vete rans
and res idents . The ne ighbor sa id that he would contact the Management Of f ice and make
the ar rangements to rese rve the Bal l room . The Of f ice in fo rmed him that only LBS
char te red c lubs cou ld rese rve the ba l l room at no cost . Non -char te red groups or ind iv idua l s
a re requ i red to pay a f ee . They had a di lemma .
Another ne ighbor , a l so ex -Navy , heard of the prob lem and of fe red a so lut ion .
He was the pres ident of Shorecroppers , a char te red c lub . He of fe red to
ar range fo r the Bal l room to be rese rved under the Shorecroppers banner .
The Management Of f ice agreed , and the Genera l ’s br ie f ing was presented
in the spr ing of 2004 to an audience of over 30 vete rans and res idents .
And that ’s when someone asked the quest ion , “Why don ’ t we obta in a
char te r fo r the vete rans and estab l i sh an LBS Veterans Club ? ” . They did ,
and in May of 2004 , the c lub was fo rmal l y char te red .
The three members of the c lub and the ind iv idua l s invo lved in that f i r s t presentat ion were
the Genera l , re t i red L ieutenant Genera l Randy Rigby , the ex -Navy pi lo t , L ieutenant Char l ie
Bar ry and the pres ident of Shorecroppers , Navy L ieutenant Commander Dav id Rac law .
They , a long with others , inc lud ing Ron Wisnewsk i , US Army , Al Wincheste r , US Mar ine
Corp , John Betzo ld , US Navy , and Char l ie Foos , US Army , began organ iz ing and bui ld ing the
Veterans Club . By - l aws were estab l i shed . Events were planned . The purpose of the
organ izat ion was estab l i shed , which i s to fos te r pat r io t i sm , l ove of our nat ion ’s f l ag and to
promote apprec ia t ion of our count ry , U .S . vete rans , the i r spouses and the i r ch i ld ren .
In 2006 , the Veterans pet i t ioned the Master
Board to create an LBS Veterans Memor ia l
Garden l ocated ad jacent to the Mar ina at no
cost to the res idents . A f l agpo le was there but
a new base was bui l t around the pole
recogn iz ing the f i ve branches of se rv ice .
Then a beaut i fu l f lo ra l garden was created .
The f lowers and maintenance of the garden were prov ided by Peggy Morr i s and Roger
Bengtson , US Army which l a s ted fo r many years . The Garden i s home to 288 Stone s i tes
that prov ide a l a s t ing t r ibute to a l l LBS vete rans l i v ing or deceased .
Under the l eadersh ip of Pres ident Tom Gi lder , US Army , the Veterans Club has grown to
over 160 members . Today ’s Veterans c lub i s very act i ve in the Memor ia l Day and Veterans
Day se rv ices , and many other communi ty events , inc lud ing the Suppor t Our Troops dr ive ,
Toys fo r Tots , and the Mi l i ta ry Speakers Bureau . The LBS Veterans Execut i ve Commit tee
cons i s t s of Bi l l Bishop , US Navy , Bi l l Heinr ich , US Army , Bi l l Lambertson , US Ai r Force ,
Mart in Leksas , US Ai r Force , Daphne Matthews , US Navy , Dav id Rac law , US Navy , and J im
Thompson , US Army .
