    About The Theme:

Our 2011-2012 Calendar Theme is Holisc Health and Wellness, signaling our belief that being

happy, healthy and whole is not possible without understanding conict and construcvely

managing our responses to it. Few things more clearly demonstrate the undeniable connecon

between mind, body and spirit than our experience of conict and our reacons to it. This

years calendar supports an awareness of this linkage and promotes posive acon in all

three realms. Each month, you will nd acvies designed to connect mind, body and spirit,

emphasizing the value of calming ones mind by bringing awareness to the body and breath.

Somemes peace is like the morning.

    Everybody gets a fresh start.

Just as the sun comes up to greet us,

    And the moon says farewell,

We call out to peace for our part.

Likewise, peace is like the evening.

Everyone has a chance to reect.

    When you talk things out,

    Listen to each other,

Your heart will come to respect.

Finally, peace is like the night.

All of us can quietly rest.

Every journey starts with a single step. This acvity is a great way to open a

dialogue about conict with any group of any age. Exploring percepons about

conict oers a rich springboard for other acvies found in this calendar and in

    the web resources listed throughout.

    1. Write conict on the board and ask the group if they know what that word

means. (If they need help, explain that it is disagreement and give a

few age-appropriate examples.)2. Ask the class: What do you think of when you hear

    the word conict?

    3. Have the class brainstorm all the associaons they

have with the word conict. List their ideas on the

board or create a web chart.

    4. Conduct a class discussion using the following ques-

    ons:

Which words are negave? Which are posive?

    Which are neutral?

Why do you think there are more negave wordsabout conict than posive or neutral ones?

Describe a conict youve had. Would you say it was

    posive or negave?

Can anyone describe a conict that ended in a posive

way (where everyone involved felt good at the end or

things changed for the beer as a result)?

Featured Date : Sept. 21 Internaonal Day of Peace

Since its incepon in 1982, the Internaonal Day ofPeace has served as a reminder of our permanent commitment to

peace, above all interests and dierences of any kind. It provides an

opportunity for individuals, organizaons and naons to create praccal acts of

peace on a shared date. hp://www.cultureofpeace.com/calendar/peaceday/ngo/

Let Music Lead the Way: Playing calm music or nature sounds has a

posive eect on the brain and body, can lower blood pressure, and

reduce corsol, a hormone linked to stress. Take a break and listen to

cello master Yo-Yo Ma playing Bach, Pacabel etc. Consider having classical music

or nature sounds playing in the room as students enter to create a calming atmo-

sphere or take a few minutes for yourself in the middle of the day with your Ipod

to nd your inner beat. For more ideas go to:hp://bit.ly/healthline123 .

Being reecve, mindful and purposeful about our intenons before we embark

upon a shared endeavor is what this acvity is about. Seng intenons can allow

a group to reach beyond its expectaons. Intenonally intending to do ones best

-- is a powerful step to reaching that goal, especially for a group. Try this acitv-

ity when you want to set a posive tone and special feeling among group

    members.

Begin by asking, What does the word intenon mean? Then discuss

the power of intenons to shape and guide our acons.

Invite students/parcipants to clarify and share their intenons for

the year, the group, the day, or the acvity (whichever is most appro-

priate). Have fun with this idea by creang your own special ritual.

Unl you do, here is one way to do this:

1.Place a pitcher of water, empty bowl and small cup together in the

center of the space where your group will gather.

    2. Have the group form a large circle in this area, with these

    arcles at the center.

    3. Explain that the group is gathered to give voice to theirindividual intenons, hear their classmate/colleagues intenons

about this ancipated shared endeavor, and experience the

wholeness and power of the groups combined intenons.

    4. Standing in the center of the circle, model the ritual by

pouring water from the pitcher into the cup. Then speak your

intenon for this year/acvity/meeng/project over the water

and to the group. Then pour the water from the cup into the

    bowl.

    5. Invite parcipants to do the same.

6.As each person follows, the bowl lls with the water that carries all the inten-ons; the water mingles and mixes.

    7. Keep the bowl in a prominent place as the group works, as a reminder of the

    groups intenons.

    8. At the end of the session, ask the group whether they realized their intenons.

Then, pour the water (from the bowl) over a plant or landscaping that will

    benet from the special water.

    6/28

This is an exercise about discovering ones personal power. In any conict, thereare things you cant control. However, there are always things you CAN controland knowing what they are and how to use them is a fundamental and powerful

    CR tool.

Have students prepare a group presentaon to teach the 10 things they cancontrol in a conict. This will help everyone remember them in even a stress-ful conict situaon.

    1. Your Plan for the Future Knowing what you want in the future helps you look

past the current situaon and focus beyond temporary problems.

    2. Your Perspecve Choose to change how you look at it. Stop and reassess

your point of view. Find a learning opportunity in the situaon.

    3. Your Responses No maer what the other person is doing, you can choose to

    control your responses.

    4. Your Investment Spend less me thinking about it, talking about it, and en-

    gaging in it.

    5. Your Role in the Conict Ask yourself, What have I said or done, or not said

or done, that has kept this conict going? If it takes two to tango and youreno longer willing to dance, the conict has no choice but to diminish.

    6. Your Expectaons When your expectaons dont t the situaon, change

your expectaons. Change, not lower. Is it possible that your expectaons are

what are causing your frustraon and the conict to connue?

    7. Your Energy Unresolved conict (and unresolved emoons!) can be a black

hole for energy. Look for a dierent outlet for your aenon and put your

    energy there.

    8. Your Own Story Give an account without elevang or vicmizing anyone.

Consider an honest but hopeful response such as, Its a dicult me right

now, but Im learning a valuable lesson about expectaons, rather than, Yet

again Im the vicm and no one cares.

    9. Your Method for Processing Emoons Find a construcve way to process

whats happening. Talking with a mentor, family member, friends, clergy, or a

therapist can be helpful. Keeping a journal, wring leers youll never send,

a vigorous workout, or even slinging rocks at the tree in the backyard are all

producve ways to process your emoons and perspecve about an otherwise

    unproducve situaon.

    10. Your Character No one can make you do anything. When you say, He just

makes me so (ll in the blank) that I had to (ll in whatever terrible response

or acon you took), youre giving the other person control over your moral -

ber. Take personal responsibility and dont give anyone else the power to makeyou behave in a way that is unbecoming, unethical, or dishonorable. Show

your best side and not an unchecked series of poor reacons.

    Calming Through Visualizaon

Visualizing about nature is known to calm the mind and can work wonders

in anger management. You can conduct this acvity in a group or one to

one. Ask parcipants to close their

eyes and relax. Paint a mental image for the

group by calmly describing a beauful, relax-

ing, refreshing scene. Talk about anything

from nature that evokes peaceful calm

such as mountains, a river, a beach, a for-

est etc. Ask them to visualize the scene

as you lead them through it. If possible,

weave a story around the imagery to

    which the group can relate.

The way one sees, understands, and feels abouta situaon makes up his/her point

of view. Oen we make the mistaken assumpon that others share or should

share our own POV. In reality, we all see and feel in our own unique way. We may

not agree with anothers POV. Some of the things that shape our POVs are:

Where and how we have grown up,

    What experiences we have had,

What we have learned from others.

Autograph Exercise: This exercise encouragesstudents to get to know one another and tolay the groundwork for understanding POVs.

Several days before doing this exercise have each

student give you a fact about him/herself that

no one else knows and that s/he is willing to

share with the group. Type these facts into a

numbered list, leaving a blank aer each fact

with enough room for the owners autograph.Make enough copies for everyone.

Pass out the sheets to the students and give them

10 minutes to walk around the room and see how many people

they can match with the facts. When they nd a match they get that persons

    autograph.

Debrief this exercise by asking how many matches were made; if there were any

surprises; and what role assumpons played in this exercise.

Feel Your HeartYoga helps people of all ages focus, relax and be mentally alert. Gra-

tude engenders a posive outlook. Take 5 or 10 minutes out of your

day to do this yoga-inspired exercise with your students. Bring yourself

back into your body and connect with your breath and your heart by

sing with your hands over the center of the chest, with closed eyes, and breath-

ing through the nose. Let go of everything else. Feel your heart beang and

appreciate the work it does for you every moment. Thank your heart, and feel it

    thank you back!

Being able to center yourself when you are under stress or in a conict is a veryimportant tool to avoid escalang a conict further, and to free you to use skills for

    successfully resolving it.

Points of View can be hard to see when obscured with emoon. This oen is the

case in conicts about polics, religion or issues of morality. Having skills to de-

construct a conict to reveal the needs, values and beliefs underneath all sides

of an issue is a crical skill for resolving any conict. It is especially important for

    cizens in a democracy.

In this acvity, assign students to study a polical or moral issue and have themanalyze at least two opposing points of view. To fully understand these points

of view, encourage students to research the subject including interviewing real

    people and reading relevant editorials.

Next, have students create a poster for each POV - capturing the key points.. Then,

have them use the poster as a visual aid as they take turns explaining the needs,

beliefs or values it represents. Make sure that students/parcipants understand

that they arent supposed to explain what theythink about the issue, but to pro-

vide an objecve and fair account of the POV of others.

Acve listening is really the applicaon of the Golden Rule and perhaps themost crical skill for resolving conict. To know how to listen to someoneelse, think about how you would want to be listened to. While the ideas are

largely intuive, it might take some pracce to develop (or re-develop) the skills.

Let your body language show you are listening through your:

    Facial expressions

    GesturesEye Contact

    Posture

Do not interrupt, oer advice or give suggesons.

Do not bring up similar feelings or problems from your own experience.

    Dont take sides.

Paraphrase the persons most important thoughts and feelings.

Make sure people understand it is okay to have these feelings.

Put yourself in the other persons place to understand what the person is saying

    and how they feel.

Incorporate acve listening by repeang back important informaon and

Reconciliaon changed South Africa...and South Africas eorts to forgive

and to heal as a naon changed the world!

Yogas benets include: sllness, balance, exibility, focus, peace, grace, connecon,

health, and well-being. It pairs perfectly with conict resoluon educaon. When

teaching yoga to kids it can be challenging to keep their aenon. Here are some ideas

to make the experience posve for everyone. Children will jump at the chance to assume the role

of animals, trees, owers, warriors. Your role is to step back and allow them to bark in the dog

pose, hiss in the cobra, and meow in cat stretch. They can also recite the ABCs or 123s as they are

holding poses. Sound is a great release for children and adds an auditory dimension to the physicalexperience of yoga.

As they perform the various animal and nature asanas, engage their minds to deepen their

awareness. When theyre snakes, invite them to really imagine that theyre just a long spine with

no arms and legs. Could you sll run or climb a tree? In Tree Pose ask them to imagine being a giant

oak, with roots growing out of the booms of their feet. Could you stay in the same posion for 100

years? If you were to be chopped down, would that be OK? Would it hurt?

This helps to make a connecon between the macrocosm of our environment and the microcosm of

our bodies. The importance of reverence for all life and the principle of interdependence becomes

apparent. Children begin to understand that we are all made of the same stu. Were just in

dierent forms.Source: Marsha Wenig Yoga for Kids hp://www.yogajournal.com

This acvity gives parcipants pracce with paraphrasing and acvelistening.1. Sit on the oor in one large circle. Explain that everyone will share

his/her name and something about himself/herself. Give everyone

a minute to privately prepare a response.

    2. Have one person start by sharing his/her name and something

about himself/herself. Then have the student hold on to the end

of a ball of yarn and roll it to another person in the circle.3. The person who catches the ball of yarn restates the name of the person who

rolled them the yarn and what the rst person shared about himself/herself. Then this

second person states his/her own name, something about himself/herself and rolls

the ball of yarn to the next person.

    4. Have everyone connue this process unl all have shared.

Oponal: With each holding the yarn, stand up/kneel in place to fully reveal the spider-

web. Talk about ways we are connected to one another; how communicaon strengthens

    our human web.

This is an experienal acvity that helps students/parcipants understand the feeling ofbeing excluded or of excluding others, and it provides an opportunity to pracce groupproblem solving. It is eecve with upper elementary students through adults.

Ask four volunteers to leave the room. Because these four, the outsiders, will be temporarily

excluded from the group they must be willing volunteers.

Ask the rest of the group, the insiders, to make two circles, standing shoulder to shoulder.

Tell them to pretend that they all are going to a party; however, the outsiders who le theroom are not invited. When the outsiders return to the room, they will try to get into one of

the circles so that they may be included in the party plans. The inside people are not to let

the outsiders in. They may not use force, but may ignore the outside people. (As a variaon

the inside people may be told that they must listen to the outside people before making up

    their minds.)

Tell the outside people the instrucons that were given to the inside people before leng

them back into the room to try to get into the circle. Assign two outside people to each

circle. Give them about ve minutes. (As a variaon repeat the exercise with four dierent

    volunteers.)

Aer compleng the acvity, form one large circle and ask the outsiders what it felt like tobe outside. Ask the insiders what it felt like to be inside. Then discuss who might feel like an

insider or an outsider in real life, and how it aects people to be inside or outside of a group.

Help students idenfy acts of discriminaon and explore ways to safelystand up against discriminaon. You will need chart paper, markersand the Dont Discriminate worksheet. See: hp://bit.ly/dontdiscriminate123.

Have students pretend that someone made the decision that everyone

who is wearing sneakers today will not be allowed to eat lunch in the

cafeteria (or perhaps will be allowed to eat in some other locaon oncampus that is desirable to students, i.e., outside).

    1. Discuss answers to the following with a partner:

In this situaon, how would you feel if you were wearing sneakers?

Is it reasonable for someone to decide where people can eat lunch

    based on what theyre wearing?

What if it was decided that only students who were wearing boots

could eat in the desired locaon, and you were wearing boots but

    your best friend wasnt?

    What feelings would you have?

    2. As a class, discuss the following:

If you were the one being discriminated against, what would you

    do?

What would you do if you saw another person being discriminated

    against? A stranger? A classmate? A friend?

    3. Now read Dont Discriminate to learn about real-life examples of dis-

criminaon and how people stood up against it. What are some other

ways they could safely stand up against discriminaon?

    4. Check out the website above for more ideas, like

In small groups, write skits illustrang 1) an act of discriminaon

and 2) how people stand up against it. Perform the skits.

In large or small group, ask students to create a shared record of

their reacons to this experience, without speaking. Provide chart

paper, a blank wall mural or the chalkboard.

Each records a thought, feeling or queson with wrien words or

images. More than one person may write at a me. Once everyone

has had a chance to contribute, dialogue about what it reveals.

They may draw lines to connect related comments and answers to

quesons. From: Teaching Tolerance, A project of the Southern Law Poverty Center,hp://www.tolerance.org.

Students are not at their best for learning or resolving conicts when they areexperiencing stress. The objecve of this acvity is to idenfy situaons thatcause feelings of stress, and to determine and discuss posive, healthy ways to

    cope with stressful situaons.

Discuss with students the denion of stress.

    1. Explain that stress can cause powerful feelings, as well as biological changes in

    the body.

    2. Have students brainstorm feelings and biological changes that stress can

    cause.

Responses typically relate to the ght or ight theory of stress response.

For useful informaon see: Gender Dierences in Behavioral Responses

to Stress and/or The Fascinang History of

    Stress Theory.

    3. Divide class into six groups.

    4. Posion each group in an area of the

classroom and tape a sheet of poster

board to the wall by each group. Each

poster should feature one of the head-

    ings below:

SituationsthatMakeMeAngrySituationsthatFrustrateMeSituationsthatMakeMeWorrySituationsthatMakeMeHappySituationsthatTakeaLotofTimeSituationsthatTakeMoney5. Tell each group they have 1-2 minutes to write down their responses.

    6. Aer 2 minutes, have students rotate to the poster to their right and add their

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had a quarrel, as it occasionally happens ina marriage. One word led to another, and suddenly Prince Albert angrily lethe bedroom, went to his study, slammed the door and locked it. Queen Victoria

ran aer him, knocked on the door and demanded, Open! There was no answer.

She pounded the door with her st and shouted, Open at once!! No answer.

She shouted at the top of her voice, I am the Queen of England, Scotland, Wales

and Ireland, the Empress of India and of the enre Brish Commonwealth, I amthe Commander-in-Chief of all the Brish armed forces, and I order you hereby to

    open this door!!! No answer.

Finally she said in a so voice, Albert, I am sorry, I love you and miss you. The

door then opened. This shows that nonviolence can be more powerful than

    violence.

This is a true story that appeared in a Swiss newspaper many years ago.

This acvity is about learning to avoid emoonal volcanic erupons and their

    consequences. Learning to control emoons

    takes intenon, planning and pracce.

Ask students, How is anger like a volcano? What

kind of trouble can come from losing control of

    your anger?

Teach this three-step process for regaining

    control.

THINK - what happened, what did you do,

FEEL - name your emoons, whats going

    on inside of you?

RESPOND - Use the informaon you came

up with while thinking and feeling to choose

Ask, Can you think of a me when you didnt

Here is a chance to pracce the asserve speaking, acve listening andcreave problem solving skills that you have been teaching/learningover the past several months. For each of the following role plays, name

tell parcipants they have 3 minutes to role play it. When the me is up,

go around the circle and have parcipants demonstrate for the class theirI-messages, their acve listening and the proposed soluon. Scenarios:

Two children: Two children are ghng over a pencil. One accuses the

other of stealing the pencil. The accused says she brought the pencil

    from home.

Teacher and student: Money has been stolen from a teachers desk.

A student named Pat was in the oce alone just before the teacher

    noced the money missing.

Two students: Two boys are shoong hoops at lunch. One accuses the

    other of hogging the ball.

Teacher and student: Halfway through direcons for the lesson, the

teacher noces that one child is not wring anything. The teacher

noces the child does not have a pencil. This has happened several

    mes before.

    Teacher and student: School

    rules forbid talking during re

    drills. One student sees water

on the oor and warns the

others. The teacher hearsthe student talking and

    reprimands her in front of

    everyone.

    Discuss how parcipants felt

in their roles. Ask which of

    the dierent soluons they

liked the best or which soluon was the most

respecul of everyone or the best nonviolent soluon.
