LEADERSHIP CAMPBy Abuzar

School Captain

On Tuesday morning 16 March Stage 3 leaderswent to Brewongle Environmental EducationCentre for the leadership camp.

Our journey was a one-hour drive from school toSackville North, near the Wiseman’s Ferry. Whenwe arrived at Brewongle we unpacked and wereready to do our first activity. Our first challengewas to get a ping-pong ball into a tube and theninto a bucket without using hands or equipment(that had been used before). The aim was to workas a team and to get the ball into the bucket.

The second challenge was all aboutcommunicating with each other. We had to makethe fastest time with everybody touching the ball. Then we were blindfolded to make some shapes. When we took our blindfolds off the shape lookedlike something completely different!

The next adventure was visiting the old schoolto learn about how school life was in the oldendays. A girl who ran away from the school wrotea letter about where she went. Everybodyfollowed the footsteps of her story along a nearbytrack down to the Hawkesbury River. We heardthe whipping and moaning of the convicts. When we got to the river we ate fruit and cake.

Lucky, the wildlife show was able to present tous next. The presenter told us stories about theanimals he had and the importance of Australia’snative wildlife. He let us pat some of them likethe python from the Northern Territory, afreshwater crocodile, a ringtail possum, a tawnyfrogmouth, a green tree frog and a blue tonguelizard.

Time was up. We had to pack up and head backto school.

Before we had lunch, we were challenged to tryeating kangaroo meat and taste lemon myrtle tea, which was really easy!

We had afternoon tea before going to a nearbyoval to play some sport or just to chat with somefriends. We went back to get ready for theawesome wildlife presentation. But thepresenters forgot to come! So we had to watch amovie instead. Later we were dismissed to havea shower, brush our teeth and go to sleep.

At 7:00 am, the next morning, we got up and atebreakfast. The next activity was to go to the pondand to check the condition of one of Brewongle’sponds. This included testing the temperature, salinity and how clean it was. The best part wascatching the animals and insects that lived inthe pond. Our results showed that the pond wasin a healthy condition.

QUICKSMART UPDATE

The Quicksmart lessons have begun with studentsbeing very excited about the processes. Theformal University PAT test will be administeredon Wednesday 31 March. This had beenpostponed due to a number of students leavingthe school for various sporting competitions.

On Friday 26 March a Quicksmart celebration washeld with the 2009 and 2010 students and theirparents. It gave the school the opportunity tocelebrate and show off the successes of the 2009program and introduce 2010 students and theirparents into what we expect for this year. Parentswere also treated to a mini lesson allowing themto better appreciate how the program works.

My thanks to the parents who visited the schoolon this occasion and to Mrs Dybac, Mrs Toohey,Mrs Mellross and Miss Sturman for theirorganisation to ensure that the occasion was agreat success.

Mr BodiczkyAssistant Principal

Afterwards we had a break to eat, drink and goto the toilet. This was followed by us designingour own boomerangs using only traditionalAboriginal colours such as red, black, yellow, white and using symbols like the kangaroo, snake, wombat, dots and circles.

LEADERSHIP CAMPBy Tim

SRC Representative

On the 16-17 March, the leadership team wentto Brewongle Environmental Education Centrefor a two-day camp.

First we learnt some interesting facts aboutAboriginal culture and the traditions of the localAborigines from Mark and Damien.

Then Mark gave us a boomerang each and wewere asked to paint it using some Aboriginalsymbols.

One of my favourite parts was when we had thespecial hamburgers for dinner that had been madeat Brewongle just for us!

Another favourite part was going to the oval toplay some games and to learn how to throw aboomerang so that it really did come back.
