Craughwell continued their fine run of league form with a recent 2-1 awaywin over Corrib Rangers. Played in bright sunshine, the home side took thelead on ten minutes when a long ball created confusion in the Uniteddefence and the Rangers striker nipped in to score. Craughwell respondedwell and with Cathal Greaney causing havoc in the Rangers defence, thegame turned their way. With twenty minutes gone, Greaney, having beentaken down himself in the area, converted the spot kick to level matters. Onthe half hour, Greaney was unlucky when hitting the post from a free kickbut just before the break Craughwell took the lead. A long kick fromgoalkeeper Kevin Sayers was headed down by Adrian Gilligan and therewas Greaney again to strike it home. Rangers started to get on top in the second half as United began to tire, butwith Damien Rooney excellent in midfield and both Kealan Greene andJohn Cheevers commanding in defence, Craughwell held on for win andthus move above Rangers into second place in the league.
Elsewhere, Craughwell progressed in the Lillis Cup by beating Kinvara Utd4-1 at Coleman's Field on Sunday 3 March. Mike Madden opened thescoring for United after only five minutes and although Adrian Gilliganrattled the crossbar on the half hour, it remained 1-0 at half time. Craughwellincreased their lead early in the second half when Jonathan Leech floateda pinpoint cross field pass to find Damien Rooney in space and he set upMadden for a simple tap in. The third Craughwell goal came when a mix-up in the Kinvara defence let in Madden to complete his hatrick. The visitorspulled a goal back late on but there was still time for Madden to finishedthe scoring with his best effort of the game, beating the offside trap to scoreleft footed to the corner. Best for Craughwell were full backs Ian Prendergastand Trevor Ruane while Leech was excellent in midfield and Madden upfront can be very satisfied with his four goal haul.
Craughwell U13s latest league game away to Corrib Rangers produced another great team performance.United opened the scoring on two minutes after a through ball from Micheál McFadden found Cian Waterson the edge of the box who coolly slotted the ball home. After 16 minutes Waters scored his second goalwith a fine strike and on 20 minutes Adam Cunney made it 3-0 after his close range shot beat the Rangersgoalkeeper. Just before the break Waters got his hat-trick to make it 4-0. Five minutes into the second half Corrib Rangers pulled one back to make it 4-1. Strong pressure fromCraughwell brought about our next goal when a corner from Eoin Conaghan found Adam Clarke whochested the ball down and half volleyed the ball into the roof of the net to make it 5-1. On 55 minutesAlan Callanan got goal number six when he broke down the left wing with the ball, cut in and calmly putthe ball passed the outstretched keeper. Not long after, Cunney got his second goal when his fine lobbeat the Ranger’s keeper and with our own keeper Daniel Callanan-Forde in excellent form, the final scorewas Corrib Rangers 1-7 Craughwell Utd. With the league extended to another round of games, Unitedwill be hoping to keep up their consistent form this season.
