RCMPOn Thursday morning, January 7, 2016 at ap-

proximately 8:15 a.m., the Cranbrook RCMP re-sponded to a robbery at the Byng Hotel Liquor Outlet by a suspect who had implied he was armed with a weapon.

The culprit made off with liquor but was quickly apprehended by officers near the downtown area of Cranbrook.

The suspect is being held in custody and will be facing multiple charges including robbery.

Though it may seem like a snowier winter than last year, a meteo-rologist with Environ-ment Canada says that things are returning to average after a milder winter last year.

Environment Cana-da issued a snowfall warning for the East Kootenay on Thursday and forecasted between

10 to 15 centimetres of the white stuff.

Last January and February were really mild and it has been colder this year in the latter part of November and December to early January, but its kind of been up and down since the beginning of No-vember, said meteorol-ogist Doug Lindquist.

B y the late 1950s it was very clear that the old city jail, in use from 1911 in the basement of city hall was entirely inadequate. Actually, it was very clear much earlier than that but it was during the late 1950s that city council sought to seriously seek a solution.

The city hall jail, when first constructed, was certainly an im-provement on the previ-ous ramshackle city lockups. Cranbrook had its own small city police force and both the offi-cers and the criminal element seemed of co-

The city had land available. To the imme-diate north of the Fire Hall No.1, on 11th Ave-nue, was the fire hall

seems to have been the case.

In April, the council submitted building de-sign suggestions to Nel-son architect David Fairbanks, who, in turn, submitted a sketch to council in January, 1960, at an estimated con-struction cost of $100,000. A committee of Mayor Sang, Alder-men J. Ward and S. Mc-Cleary formed to deal with the matter. The cost estimate rose to just under $118,000 within two weeks which in-cluded all mechanical trades, light fixtures, the (politically correct) prisoner accommoda-tions and professional fees but not furnishings, equipment, landscap-ing and necessary bylaw expenses. A final figure of $124,000 went before the populace in April, 1960, and was approved by a vote of 405 to 66.

Local contractor A.E. Jones made a successful bid for the construction rights and worked throughout the winter and spring to complete

the building and the po-lice and magistrate moved into their spa-cious new headquarters on May 18, 1961. The RCMP Administrative Building officially opened on May 27, with 200 citizens given guid-ed tours by scarlet-clad Mounties and city alder-men. The parking lot to the rear and landscap-ing was still under con-struction. Later expan-sions to the north re-placed a residence and the Doctor Green Clinic (now the parking lot next to the Studio).

It was a solid struc-ture, to say the least, framed in long steel span joists over a con-crete foundation with suspended floors and a roof of concrete poured over a galvanized steel form with five-ply tar and gravel laid over two inches of rigid insula-tion and vapour seal. Owned by the city of Cranbrook, of the 7,040 total sq. ft., 2,232 sq. ft. was leased to the RCMP, including offices, 16 jail cells (featuring cell bars

exist in the city hall jail space with some ease.

The B.C. Provincial Police took over from the city police force in 1931, during a time of a worrying degree in the increase of Cranbrook lawlessness. Not every-one was happy with the change but it occurred nonetheless. Over the next two decades both the town and the police force grew but the head-quarters and jail did not.

The B.C. Provincial Police force was official-ly disbanded in 1950, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police moved into town during August of that year. In truth, the RCMP had maintained a presence in the city for years previously, with the stationing of district officers in local residen-tial barracks. By 1953 the local detachment comprised five men in very cramped office quarters and prisoners bunked two to each small cell. The solution was obvious: a new building was required.

January, 1959, saw gardens; flowers, trees, hedges, grass, and a fountain; a nice little neighbourhood park maintained by the fire-men. The land would do quite nicely for a new police building. The present day Gyro Park on 7th Avenue and Cen-tral Park (now the site of the Cranbrook Mall parking lot) were both under construction at the time so perhaps it was felt that the loss of the green space would raise little notice which, publically at least,

from Oakalla prison), a drunk tank, wash-rooms, staff kitchen, matrons room, a guard room, an interview room, a radio room, a records office and a maximum security space. A court room, witness room and mag-istrates office complet-ed the layout. The main floors were covered in vinyl and vinyl asbestos tile with each room in-dependently heated by steam from the citys main heating plant to the rear of the fire hall.

Local sub-contrac-tors included Patmore Plumbing and Heating, Modern Electric, J. Ro-mich Drywall and Fred Cawte painting. By June it was apparent that there were some minor flaws that needed touching up: lighting in the cell blocks, reinforc-ing of railings, air-ciru-clation problems, win-dows that wouldnt open, furniture casters damaging the floors, im-proper drainage in the womens cell block and a very noisy courtroom.

In true 1960s fash-ion, the building, when complete, looked like a brick box with some unique steel bar exterior ornamental elements clinging to the windows that, if nothing else, said Weve got an institu-tion here, boys, and gave the faade a rather foreboding appearance, which may well have been the point.

Further brick box ad-ditions over the years with additional steel bars draped around the windows have done lit-tle to change the origi-nal scheme. On the other hand, over the years the non-decora-tive steel bars within the building seem to have done the trick quite nicely.

efficiencies lay in the re-gional district and in Cranbrook?

Megan Lohmann, from the Community Energy Association, spoke to council about just that at the Monday night meeting. She pro-vided information on the Regional District of East Kootenay Commu-nity Energy Manager work plan for 2016.

Lohmann is travel-ling around and meet-ing with local govern-ments in the regional district to talk about what the work plan looks like.

Lohmann noted that the City of Cranbrook does have an Energy Manager, Katelyn Pocha, but her task is different.

Shell be identifying opportunities within corporate operations, so

within municipally owned facilities and in-frastructure, whereas Im looking more broad-ly, community-wide residential-commercial opportunities, she said.

Lohmann said the work plan focuses around four main areas: policy development; residential and com-mercial building energy efficiencies; solid waste; and transportation.

A lot of it does com-

plement what was iden-tified in your Communi-ty Energy Emissions Plan, which was com-pleted in 2013, she said. Every local govern-ment in the East Koote-nay has a plan like this. Many also have, as you do, the Integrated Sus-tainability plan and lan-guage within your OCP that supports the work already.

She said the policy development portion

mainly deals with en-couraging and incentiv-izing local developers to integrate more energy into their developments.

On the commercial building side, Lohmann noted that Cranbrook has many of the larger commercial buildings in the East Kootenay.

She said they hope to help business owners track their energy use to help find efficiencies.

On the residential

side, there is the East Kootenay Energy Diet, which will be refreshed and back for 2016 with rebates and incentives for homeowners in the region.

Lohmann spoke about electric vehicle charging stations. Cur-rently Cranbrook has one located at the Cran-brook Curling Club parking lot. Fernie and Invermere have the sta-tions as well. But she said it is not enough.

In the East Koote-nay there is a very obvi-ous charging gap. We have great charging sta-tions going all the way from the Okanagan through to the West Kootenay, then we have a real gap between Cal-gary and the West Koo-tenay. We have a real chance to make that connection and facili-tate the travel of tourists through this region, she said.

Lohmann said she would like to look into it from a comprehensive approach to identify strategic locations where more charging stations could be in-stalled that would fur-ther benefit the com-munity.

Ideally in this plan-

ning process Ill be look-ing at fast charging sta-tions which take about 30 minutes to reach a full charge, she said, adding those would ideally be located in areas where drivers can access other ameni-ties like restaurants, cafes and shopping.

Organic waste diver-sion is another re-gion-wide initiative that other communities have expressed interest in, she said.

This one is really neat, as there have al-ready been grass-roots efforts to address organ-ic waste diversion, mostly at the household level, she said. What were looking at is estab-lishing one regional processing facility, or perhaps three subre-gional Elk Valley, Kimberley-Cranbrook area and Columbia Val-ley. Then initially en-couraging commercial pickup.

She said they would work with larger pro-ducers, grocery stores and restaurants as a first step, then allow local governments to decide if they would like to par-ticipate in curb-side col-lection as well.

Boosting energy efficiencies in the EK

tem is a collision of cooler arctic air coming from Alberta against warmer air coming up from the south, added Lindquist.

What I can say about the precipitation is that its been a setup where systems have been moving up from the south and because it has been cooler and the arctic air is just north of us, its been that colli-sion of arctic air thats on the Alberta side and a bit further up the trench and this milder air from the south thats given us a lot of snow, particularly recently in

the last few weeks.While the November

total snowfall was down17 centimetres this year as compared to 32 centimetres in 2014the December snowfall is up from 19 to 33 centi-metres.

January 2015 had 22 centimetres of snowfall, while Cranbrook cur-rently has just under six centimetres of snow seven days into the month.

In the last 90 days, normally Cranbrook gets about 80 mm of precipitation, this year you have about 120 [mm], said Lindquist. We were kind of on

track for average until about the middle of No-vember, then there was a big jump and it kind of held off until early De-cember, and then steadily uphill since then.

Temperatures are ex-

pected to fluctuate over the next week or so, as the snow will dissipate into a mix of sun and cloud.

By [Friday], well be creeping into arctic air so well still have a 30 per cent chance of flur-ries yet tomorrow and then sunny for Saturday and Sunday, some sun coming in with the cold-er air as the arctic air tries to seep in from the north and from Alberta, said Lindquist.

Its a much drier pe-riod, we dont have much snow forecast all the way through till Wednesday. I noticed that if one went further out to the latter part of next week, we might be

getting into milder air, if that pans out to be true, and if it warms up to zero, we may start to get some melting.

Mainroad Contract-ing provided an update on operations on Thurs-day, noting it was aware of the pending snowfall and warned drivers to expect slippery and slushy set ions as tem-peratures are expected to drop on Thursday evening, especially in the Elk Valley and Rocky Mountain Trench.

Plowing and sanding is in progress, however, adopt winter driving conditions and slow down on East Kootenay highways.

Scouts to collect Christmas trees

Running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., scouts and volunteers will be hit-ting the streets of Cran-brook to collect all the trees that may still be lingering in homes.

The event is not a fundraiser, as the scouts prefer it to be an act of service for the commu-nity, however, they will

accept unsolicited do-nations if people wish to give them.

Just have the tree, sans Christmas decora-tions, out outside of your house or at the edge of your property and the scouts will pick them up and take them to Southeast Disposal, which gets rid of them.

Lech Walesa, a national hero 26 years ago for his role in ending Commu-nist rule in Poland as the leader of Solidarity, has little political power in the country today, but he still has his voice. Last week he raised it, to condemn the new Pol-ish government that emerged from last Oc-tobers election.

This government acts against Poland, against our achievements, freedom, de-mocracy, not to mention the fact that it makes us look ridiculous to the rest of the world, Walesa said. Im ashamed to travel abroad.

Walesa said this on pri-vately-owned Radio Zet, be-cause Polish public service television and radio will no longer invite him to speak on any of their channels. The new government sees him as an enemy, and it now controls pub-lic broadcasting completely: all four chan-nels of TVP and the 200 stations of Polskie Radio.

It took them over in an operation that the European Parliaments president, Mar-tin Schultz, described as having the char-acteristics of a coup. First the new Law and Justice Party (PiS) government packed the constitutional tribunal that might have stopped the media takeover, swearing in five new PiS appointees in the middle of the night. And then it used its parliamenta-ry majority to bring the public service media under party control.

The new Polish Culture Minister, Piotr Glinski, explained that it was necessary to re-Polonise Polish society i.e. cleanse it of all the decadent Western European liberal notions and values that had infect-ed it under the rule of the outgoing Civic Platform government and that the pub-lic broadcasters would therefore be re-des-ignated as national cultural institutes.

The head of PiSs parliamentary caucus, Ryszard Terlecki, was even franker: Over the past few weeks we have had to deal

with the extremely unreliable work of the public media, he said, referring to the media coverage of popular protests against the PiSs attack on the constitutional tribu-nal. If the media criticises our changes we have to stop it.

The PiS is the creation of Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his late twin brother Lech, who died in a plane crash at Smolensk in Russia in 2010. The brothers have always had a close political relationship with the Catholic Church in Poland, and the PiS

largely owes its recent electoral victory to the support of Polands very conservative Catholic bishops.

But it wasnt all that sweeping a victory, really. The PiS got just over half the seats in the Sejm (par-

liament), which technically allows it to do almost anything it wants now that the con-stitutional tribunal has been crippled. But it won those seats on only 37 percent of the popular vote and now that it has begun to put its agenda into action, recent opin-ion polls are giving it only 24 percent sup-port.

That doesnt bother Jaroslaw Kaczynski in the slightest. He has the same knack as Donald Trump for saying nasty, untrue things and making them sound bold and incisive (to his target audience, at least) rather than just stupid and slimy.

For example, he recently warned Poles that Syrian refugees would bring diseases and parasites into the country. He contin-ues to speculate publicly that the crash that killed his twin brother was a plot (pre-sumably a Russian plot), despite the fact that two official Polish investigations have concluded that the cause of the crash was pilot error.

Even the poor, left-behind Poles who are Kaczynskis target voters are some-times alarmed by his anger and his ex-tremism, so he wisely decided to let anoth-

er, virtually unknown party member, An-drzej Duda, run for the presidency last year.

Duda won, so Kaczynski repeated the strategy in October, promoting another relatively obscure and unthreatening party member, Beata Szydlo, as prime minister after the PiSs victory in the parliamentary election. But most people suspect that he will quickly tire of working from the shad-ows and take her place as prime minister himself.

What has brought this deeply unat-tractive politician to power in Poland? Its largely the same factors that have made Donald Trump a political phenomenon in the United States: an economy that is doing quite well overall Polands econo-my grew by a third under Civic Platform in the past six years but that has left a large chunk of the population behind.

Its even the same chunk of the popula-tion that backs Trump in the US: older, more religious, less well educated, living in smaller cities and rural areas. Kaczynskis victory therefore depends on a very narrow and fragile base, and he may well become more and more radical in his struggle to hold it together.

It is therefore going to be quite exciting in Poland for a while, and probably quite embarrassing for people like Lech Walesa. But it isnt an anti-democratic revolution with real staying power.

Poles overwhelmingly want to remain part of NATO and the European Union, if only (in some cases) because they still fear Russia so much. You cannot go far down the road Kaczynski wants to travel without coming into serious conflict with the EUs laws protecting civil and human rights and when Poles have to choose between the EU and Kaczynski, they will not back Kaczynski.

M any Cranbrook resi-dents are this month making one of their most important New Years reso-lutions ever.

Theyre becoming Demen-tia Friends, committing to learning a little bit about de-mentia so they can be support-ive and inclusive toward people with the illness, which has be-come one of the countrys most pressing health issues. Statis-tics suggest three out of four area residents know someone living with dementia.

People affected by demen-tia continue to live in and be a part of our communities, and we can support them to stay connected in ways that are meaningful for them, says Julie Cameron, First Link Helpline Coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. for the East Kootenay region.

Through individual actions we can raise awareness of de-mentia and reduce the stigma attached to it.

Cranbrook residents show support for important health issue by becoming Dementia Friends

The Dementia Friend cam-paign is the cornerstone of Alz-heimers Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January.

Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Cameron. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. The

next step is to understand five simple things about dementia:

It is not a natural part of aging.

It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicat-ing and doing everyday activi-ties.

It is possible to live well with dementia.

There is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia.

The Alzheimer Society of B.C.s East Kootenay branch is here to help people with de-mentia and their care partners.

That knowledge can easily translate into action at home and work, Cameron adds.

The Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link, connects people af-fected by dementia with infor-mation, Society support ser-vices and programs such as Minds in Motion, and demen-tia education sessions at any stage of the journey.

T ed Striker a former pilot suffering from PTSD is forced to safely land a plane after the crew and half the passengers are taken out by food poi-soning.

While many may recognize this as the plot from the 1980 blockbuster comedy Airplane!, it is also the exact plot of Arthur Haileys first novel 1958s Runway Ze-ro-Eight. Surprisingly, this is not where the people behind Airplane! took their idea from.

Before he became one of the most successful novelists of the 20th cen-tury, Arthur Hailey whose mega-hits include Hotel, Detective, and Airport was an avia-tion instructor during the Second World War, as well as a magazine editor. After the war he emigrated to Canada to work for the pub-lishing firm Maclean-Hunter. It was on his flight to Toronto that inspiration hit him, as he began to wonder what would hap-pen if the pilots were suddenly incapaci-tated by food poisoning. Then, he thought to himself, it would fall to a rusty old wartime pilot like me to bring the plane down safely.

Unsure he had enough of a story to fill a whole novel, he first wrote it up as a short play which he sold for $600 to a brand new entity CBC Television. Only an hour long, the play was broadcast live on the evening of April 3rd, 1956. Two million

Canadians tuned in to watch, making it the most successful teleplay of the time. NBC purchased the story to televise their own version of it, as did the BBC.

The success of his story gave Hailey the confidence to expand it into a full-length novel, which he titled Runway Zero-Eight. Yet before that hit the shelves in 1958, Par-amount Pictures turned it into a feature film called Zero Hour!

Although this was success enough for Hailey, this was the story that just kept on

giving. It soon appeared as the

1964 German film Flug in Gefahr, then a Cze-koslovaian radio play Let Do Nebezpec and then again as a CBS movie of the week Terror in the Sky.

This brings us all the way to the mid-70s, and a struggling comedy troupe called the Kentucky Fried Theatre. Made up of two brothers (Jerry and David Zucker) and their friend (Jim Abrahams), the three performed satire on current events, somewhat in the vein of Saturday Night Live. For material, the three would record late night television on a cheap audio cassette recorder, and then write spoofs on whatever television commer-cials the recorder caught.

Between the commercials were late night movies, and one they had recorded immediately caught their attention: the 1957 film Zero Hour! With no visuals, the dialogue sounded hilarious to the trio,

who decided that this material could make a successful comedy film.

To make their own screenplay work, the trio needed to lift the characters and dialogue verbatim from Zero Hour!, so they purchased the rights to that film from Paramount. What was serious and dra-matic in 1958 was unintentionally hilari-ous in 1980, including that famous excla-mation mark after the title.

But before Airplane! opened to sold out theatres, another version of Haileys original story appeared. Two kids in the eighth grade had used their parents Super 8 camera to film their own version of Ter-ror in the Sky. This is only notable as the year before they had filmed their own version of Jaws, which ended up being a film festival favourite.

The story of Ted Striker and a plane full of food poisoning may have reached its largest audience with Airplane!, but it also ended there too. No one could ever take this scenario serious again, not without visions of Leslie Nielsen saying and dont call me Shirley.

Arthur Hailey, the creator of these myr-iad productions, was spotted exiting a theatre with a huge grin on his face. He told reporters (who incorrectly but under-standably thought Airplane! was spoofing his book Airport. Right author, wrong book) I laughed like everyone else.

For the second time this season, the Koote-nay Ice have been burned by a player re-fusing to report to Cran-brook.

Riley Whittingham, 20, acquired from the Spokane Chiefs Monday morning in a deal that sent 20-year-old Presten Kopeck south of the border, is not expected to report to the Koote-nay Ice after initially in-dicating he was excited for the opportunity.

He has decided not to come [to Cranbrook] and hes looking at all his options right now, said Jeff Chynoweth, president and general manager of the Koote-nay Ice, Thursday after-noon. It doesnt look like the Kootenay Ice or the Western Hockey League is an option at this present time.

Whittingham was ac-quired from the Chiefs along with a fourth-round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. Ac-cording to Chynoweth, Whittinghams refusal to report will not impact the trade with Spokane, as there was protection written into the deal to cover circumstance such as this.

When I talked to Riley on Monday, he was excited about coming and getting an opportu-nity for a more expanded role with our hockey club, Chynoweth said. But as the day pro-gressed and the week progressed, hes had sec-ond thoughts. He is con-templating his future right now and looking at all options.

In 34 games this sea-son with the Chiefs, Whittingham posted eight goals and 18 points. Over 228 career WHL games, all with Spokane, the 6-foot-2, 196-pound forward has registered 46 goals and 95 points.

Im not going to lose much sleep over it, said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. Im not really concerned with it. If [Whittingham] ends up, at some point, deciding to come, hell help us with our depth up front. If hes not here, which is my feeling that he wont be, it just gives the current group we have more opportunity

and more ice time. Were focusing on

trying to develop our young players and give them a chance to play. Having a 20-year-old here for a couple months really doesnt help our project. Its a win-win ei-ther way, in my opinion.

Should status quo re-main, this leaves the Kootenay Ice carrying 22 players -- 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goaltenders -- head-ing into Sundays WHL trade deadline.

I wasnt counting on this and were at that magic number right now with 22 players, Chynoweth said.

Were going to con-tinue to look right up until noon Sunday. If we can better our hockey club, well definitely look at it.

Whittinghams refus-al to report to the Koote-nay Ice is not a new chal-lenge for Chynoweth.

Back on Nov. 26, Chynoweth brokered a deal to bring 18-year-old forward Johnny Wesley to Cranbrook from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a sev-enth-round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

After confirming Wesleys willingness to report to the Ice, the deal was rubber-stamped and officially processed by the league. Before the day ended, Wesley had reconsidered his situa-tion and informed Chynoweth he was not going to report.

The deal was nullified by the WHL and Wesley, a native of Surrey, B.C., remained property of the Hurricanes only to be dealt Nov. 30 to the Van-couver Giants for an eighth-round pick in 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Kootenay Ice (7-31-3-0) will move on without the services of Whittingham as they host the Regina Pats (17-17-3-3) Friday night (7 p.m.) at Western Finan-cial Place.

While the Kootenay Ice had been without the on-ice services of cap-tain Luke Philp since Nov. 21, the 20-year-old was still around and now that hes gone, a true and complete void exists.

Luke, even though he wasnt in our lineup, he was always around, said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. Hes a leader, whether hes dressed in your lineup or not.

This now really opens the door for guys. Weve seen improve-ments in that from Matt Alfaro and Zak Zbo-rosky. But weve got Tanner [Lishchynsky] and Hof [Wyatt Hoflin] here still that are a big part and were big parts of it from the beginning.

Well go about nam-ing a captain next week. Im pretty sure, in my mind, who thats going to be, but well get some more input from some of our players.

Philp, of course, was shipped off to the Red Deer Rebels Sunday morning in a blockbust-er deal that brought a handful of assets to a re-building Ice franchise.

Zborosky, who has been sporting an alter-nate captains letter on his sweater, is certainly a candidate and when asked who needs to step

up with the former cap-tain no longer in the fold, the first finger he pointed was at himself.

Its a big impact. Luke [Philp] was our best player and our captain, Zborosky said Thursday. To see a guy go like that, its never easy. But weve got to move on from that. Thats how it works. Its a business. We kind of thought it was going to happen, so we kind of prepared for it.

I have to step up and guys like Alf and Lish, they have to step up, too. Even sec-ond-year guys, they can say a lot of things in the dressing room. But were going to miss [Philp]. Hes a fantastic leader. Everyone can

pitch in to fill that role and we should be okay.

In their first outing without their captain, Zborosky and the Ice skated to a 3-1 win over the Swift Current Bron-cos this past Sunday.

With Zboroskys hometown Regina Pats (17-17-3-3) visiting Cranbrook Friday, the hope is to build off a two-game Saskatchewan road trip that saw the Ice (7-31-3-0) claim three of a possible four points.

This is only the sec-ond time playing them this year, so we dont know much about them, Zborosky said. But they have a few guys that can score. Weve got to shut down those guys and weve

got to continue to play how weve been playing the last couple games.

Fridays game marks the first on a six-game road trip for the Pats, who were thumped 7-3 by the Prince Albert Raiders last Sunday.

We havent seen them in quite some time, but theyre a very aggressive group that plays with a lot of speed, Pierce said. Theyre similar to us in that theyre young and they make some of the same mistakes that we do. We want to play the same way we played in Moose Jaw [4-3 OT loss Satur-

day], and to a lesser ex-tent, maybe in Swift Current-- a real uptem-po and competing.

Were not spending a ton of time focused on our opponent. It sounds funny because its Janu-ary and thats usually when you start to dial into that stuff. But with new players, healthy bodies coming back -- guys that hadnt been in our lineup for a while -- were still really focused on ourselves and making some subtle changes.

Having come to Cranbrook via the Luke Philp blockbuster deal with the Red Deer Reb-els, the native of North Vancouver is looking forward to a fresh start and the opportunity to build some special with his new team.

I was excited -- this team is in a rebuild right now and Im a younger guy, Pouliot said prior to practice Thursday at Western Financial Place. They told me, Youre going to get more op-portunity here than in Red Deer.

The opportunity will

be there if the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Pouliot is willing to work for it and based on what he had to say Thursday, that shouldnt be an issue.

Its pretty early to tell where exactly he will fit in with our group but he seems like a great kid, very respectful, said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice.

Hes going to get an opportunity to play. Hell play [Friday] night for sure and between him, Jason Wenzel and Dallas Hines, its an opportuni-ty for someone in that group to really step up and take the bull by the horns, so to speak.

I think hes excited just to get a chance to

play.A former 11th-round

selection (228th overall) of the Saskatoon Blades at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, Pouliot is in his rookie campaign, having skated in 14 games with the Rebels prior to being traded to the Ice.

While a change of scenery can be refresh-ing, Pouliot elicited a good chuckle from members of the media when he talked about the adversity hes faced in making the move to the East Kootenay.

The biggest chal-lenge is probably the snow, Pouliot said with a laugh, showing off his electric smile again.

The East Kootenay is

under heavy snowfall warning with 10 to 15 centimetres expected to hit the area over the course of the next 24 hours, but at least Pouliot made it to town before the storm rolled in so he could meet his new teammates and prepare for Fridays tilt with the Regina Pats.

Coming to a new team, youve got to meet everyone and its a little harder to adjust, Pouliot said. But this team has been really good, its been easy to adjust.

With the Regina Pats visiting Cranbrook Fri-day night, Regina native and alternate captain Zak Zborosky made note of the arrival of Pouliot.

Hes been fitting in fine, I see him around the dressing room talking with guys and joking around, Zbo-rosky said. He seems pretty calm on the ice. He doesnt seem too nervous out there. I think hes going to fit in fine.

You just let him know that everyones his friend and were going to welcome him.

The true welcome will come Friday when Pouliot, who is expected to don sweater No. 7, steps onto the ice for the first time as a member of his new club.

Dear Annie: My wife and I have been married for a long time. In the last couple of years, she has developed an incontinence problem. She seems not to be aware of how bad it is.
