E German and Chinese Immigrants

Political upheaval in Germany sent huge numbers of Germansto the United States in the early 1880s. Chinese immigrantsoutnumbered all others of non-European ancestry until 1882,when the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed.

CForeign-born residents often settled in the same states as others from their homelands. Notice which group of immigrants was largest in more states than any other group.

1969 to Present

ERA

10

The average American life expectancy has increased by seven yearssince 1970, but health issues continue to face the country.

Half of the U.S. population is over 36, almost four years older thanin 1990. America’s aging population puts greater burdens on thecountry’s health care resources.

New communicable diseases, and new strains of older diseases, threatenthe public’s health. Over a million Americans are now infected withHIV, the virus that causes AIDS, a lethal disease unknown before 1980.

Health care costs continue to rise far faster than inflation. Healthinsurance has become too expensive for many people and strainsthe budgets of individuals, businesses, and governments.

AA Over the past four decades, exercise has becomemore popular as increasing numbers of Americanswork at jobs that require less physical activity. It isestimated that only 3 in 10 adults exercise enough.

B By the time AIDS was first identified in 1981, tens of thousands of people in the United States had beeninfected. Ignorance, fear, and frequent public hostility caused infection rates to climb for over a decade. Thanks to public health campaigns the number of cases of AIDS in the United States has remainedconstant in recent years.

C The Aging of America

The Baby Boom swelled the population in age groups bornbetween 1945 and 1960 (see graph A on page 96). AsBaby Boomers age, Medicare and other health programsfor senior citizens will become increasingly strained.

D Rising Health Care Costs

Since 1970, expensive new technologies, the threat ofmalpractice lawsuits, and rising demand from an agingand inactive population have driven up the cost of healthcare. Attempts to control costs by the health care industry, insurance companies, and the government have beenunsuccessful.
