II love this time of year. It’s a time to express thankfulness and appreciation to one another and to our community. The Abilene Zoo plays an important role in this community, and we on the Abilene Zoological Society Board are thankful to those whose support makes it such a special place. As the Abilene Zoo completes another fiscal year, we have yet again found successes to celebrate and build upon. The zoo has been blessed by strong attendance, improvements in exhibits and facilities -- and a strategic vision that builds for a bright future. I am thankful for our staff at the Abilene Zoo as they lead in the day-to-day operations, maintaining and improving our facilities and grounds and caring for the animals. I am also thankful for the AZS Board. This group leads in building the vision for our zoo. Its members work tirelessly behind the scenes to support the staff’s daily needs. They do so because they care —they care about our community and strive to make our zoo a place that blesses each person that visits. John Pennington has led the AZS Board the past two years with passion and commitment. John’s servant leadership shines brightly in all that he does, and we are so thankful for the impact he has had on our board, the zoo and its staff. He deserves our appreciation not only in this season of thanks, but throughout the year. Excitement about our zoo is building in the Abilene community and beyond. Giraffe Safari will be a wonderful asset to the zoo sure to thrill young and old alike. This game-changing exhibit is worth celebrating and wouldn’t be happening if not for the efforts of volunteers. From major projects to the smallest details, volunteers carry us forward in accomplishing our strategic vision and in making the Abilene Zoo the No. 1 tourist attraction in Abilene. Our volunteers are essential, and we are thankful for them. Thank you for supporting the zoo. Thank you for your past and future volunteer efforts that help make this a truly special place.

Thank you.

Tis the season to say “Thank You”

Steve Hare has been volunteering at the zoo since 2014 and has volunteered 201 hours educating our guests!

Why did you want to volunteer at the zoo? After watching Education Curator Joy Harsh do such a great job of educating chil-dren and adults about animals, I wanted to help. I have always loved animals and enjoy teaching children and young people and this is a great match.  For the past 6 years my grandchildren have loved going to the zoo on every visit to Abilene and this is a way I can give back for all the joy they have received from the zoo.

What is your favorite thing about being at the zoo?My favorite thing about being at the zoo is getting to be around the animals and helping people enjoy their visits to the zoo. I really enjoy watching children get excited about interacting/touching an animal. I like feeling a small part of the com-munity of amazing zookeepers we have at the Abilene Zoo.

What is your favorite animal to work with?I like working with the reptiles. We live in a part of the world where many people have developed an attitude the only good snake is a dead one.  I want to be a part of helping people understand how amazing and wonderful these animals are and how important they are to a healthy ecosystem.I am very thankful to Joy, Paige and Hannah for teaching me so much about the animals in the Education Department. Their passion for what they do is contagious.

Become a volunteer with your Abilene Zoo! The animals will love you for it!Our dedicated and enthusiastic adult volunteers (ages 18 and older) make the zoo a richer place. These dedicated folks contribute their time and talent to assist zoo guests and provide staff support. Education Department volunteers are exposed to amazing learning opportunities while helping the zoo with fun education and conservation activities. Administrative, animal care and facility volunteers offer valuable support to the Abilene Zoo while gaining behind-the-scenes knowledge of zoo opera-tions.

The Adult Volunteer Program is divided into four categories:Education: support the education department as a Guest Ambassador, assisting with Education department animal care and animal programs, and with research and materials

Administrative: work Special Events; assist with Membership, Marketing, and Development.

Animal Care: Assist the animal staff in caring for animals and providing behavioral enrichment.

Facilities: Assist the Horticulture and Maintenance staff with a variety of projects.

The Benefits of Volunteering • Flexible schedule. • Opportunities to gain valuable customer service and public relations skills. • Free admission passes (based on hours of service). • Variety of volunteer activities. • Work with an exciting staff and volunteers. • Recognition for your service.

For those who are accepted into the program, there is a small $20 volunteer fee, which covers a background check, training materials, T-shirt and name badge. Applications are available on the zoo website and in the gift shop. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Baker, the Volunteer Coordinator at 325-676-6451 or [email protected] NOTE: Due to strict animal husbandry guidelines

and safety issues, there are extremely limited opportunities to interact with any of the animals. Remember, this is for their safety and well-being, as well as yours. Anyone who will be working with education animals or animals on exhibit will be required to take a TB test.

JOY HARSH | Education Curator

I’m once again pleased to inform you that we reached our goals in attendance and revenue generation for our fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Every dollar earned through membership sales, ride token sales and purchases at our guest services venues goes back into the operation and upgrades at the zoo. So from all of us here, thanks for being a member, for riding the carousel, for mining for gems, for enjoying a burger and helping us reach our goals.

I know many of you are wondering when Giraffe Safari will be opening. Because of construction and weather delays, along with the fact that we’ll be introducing the animals to this new exhibit area during the coldest months, we have set the opening date for April 2016. Trust me, we all wish it could be sooner. However, we must be sure that the facilities are complete and safe to house the animals.

Speaking of animals, three new species, Red River Hogs, Kori Bustards and Blue Duiker will all be taking up residence in Giraffe Safari. We’ re excited to add to our animal family and know these new species will contribute greatly to the educational aspects and our visitors enjoyment of the state of this exhibit. You can learn more about these interesting animals in this edition of Zoo News.

See you at the zoo!

New giraffe exhibit to feature other African wildlifeThe exciting new Giraffe Safari will bring an African savannah to the heart of the zoo. The zoo’s two female reticulated giraffe, Asha and Punk, and the male Rothschild giraffe, Mesi, will graze in double the space of the old giraffe exhibit, while being surrounded by other African animal species. Some of the new animals already have arrived, awaiting their debut as they go through the mandatory 30-day quarantine period. Some may not go on exhibit until the weather is warmer, but you can count on seeing them by spring. Even better, all of the African animals in the zoo – new exhibits and old -- will be getting updated interpretive signing – adding more educational information at each stop. Look forward to seeing these new animals when Giraffe Safari opens:

Red River Hogs: This wild pig lives in the Afri-can rainforest, dining on berries, roots, and other plants, as well as small reptiles and insects. The zoo will have a small “sounder” of these hogs, a group with a male and several females.

Blue Duikers: This petite member of the an-telope family typically lives in the rainforests of central Africa, dining on fallen fruit, nuts, flowers and fungi. The smallest of these can weigh in at only 8 pounds, spending 75 percent of its day foraging for food.

Kori Bustards: These large birds are thought to be the heaviest creature capable of taking flight, which they only do when in danger. Native to the grasslands of Africa, they are ground-dwellers that dine on insects and reptiles.

Other African animals that have been on exhibit at the zoo will be moved into the new Giraffe Safari area. The Colobus monkeys are getting a new caged area, while crowned cranes, yellow-billed storks, and helmeted guineas will graze on the giraffe grounds.

Bluu Beam will bring you zoo animal information on your smart phone!

It is autumn in Abilene, finally, and the weather has been hot for this time of year! After a moderately hot summer, and September, and a warm October, we have finally gotten the rain all these blooming flowers need! And they’re going crazy! Knockout Roses, Salvias, Fall Asters, Carolina Jessamine, and Turk’s Cap are in full bloom, just to name a few. On the horticulturists’ menu this fall is the addition of several new trees to the South American Pampas exhibit, as well as the Rhino exhibit planter, and lots of perennials throughout the zoo, including areas such as the Bird Garden, Caribbean Cove, Karibu Outpost, and the Elm Creek. We’ll be adding plants like Gulf or Pink Muhly grass, more fall-blooming Asters, Regina Iris, Cast Iron plants, and several more. By the way, folks, autumn is one of the best times of year (besides early spring) to plant perennials and trees! If they are deciduous trees, meaning they lose their leaves in the fall and winter, many people recommend waiting to plant them until they enter dormancy, but before the ground freezes in the winter. Evergreens can be planted any time in the fall and spring, or anytime the weather isn’t very hot, or very cold. Here at the Abilene Zoo, and especially in the Horticulture Department, volunteers can be a valuable asset to getting large projects, or even the daily chores, completed. To successfully grow and manage a wide variety of non-native plants in West Texas, a certain amount of knowledge, wisdom, and experience (collectively referred to as “plant skills”) is necessary, but if you can sweep, pull weeds, hold a water hose, operate a shovel, or rake leaves, you can volunteer! And we have had some extraordinary volunteers, some topping out far above 300 hours of donated time. Several large projects completed at the Abilene Zoo have been made possible only with the help of volunteers, so if you are interested, please inquire! Volunteer registration forms are available on the website at www.abilenezoo.org.

By supporting the zoo, visitors and members alike always have supported the Abilene Zoo’s conservation efforts. Not only does your support help us to provide top-notch care for our animal residents, but it also allows us to support field conservation efforts around the world. In early October, we were proud to announce our new “Quarters for Conservation” project. Twenty-five cents from each paid admission is donated to the conservation funds for three Texas-based programs. It works like this: When guests pay admission they are handed a recycled metal washer that represents their quarter for conservation. They then vote with that washer by tossing it into one of three vortex wishing wells at our conservation kiosk. At the end of next September, the animal project with the most votes will receive $10,000, $5,000 for second place, and $2,500 for third place. Members will not receive a washer with each admission, but of course are welcome to vote with loose change! Each wishing well represents one of three exciting conservation programs.

Ocelots: The United States only

has 50 of this small cat species left, and they can

all be found at the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

in south Texas. Funds through this project will be donated to the Friends of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge to help support the refuge and its animal residents.

Turtles: The Turtle Survival Alliance is a Texas based organization that supports projects both in Texas and

around the world trying to conserve

threatened and endangered turtles and

tortoises.

Attwater’s Prairie Chicken: More than a million of these

colorful grouse used

to roam the coastal prairies of

Texas and Louisiana. Now there

are less than 400 of them in existence. Funds through this

project will be donated to the Friends of the Attwater Prairie

Chicken Refuge and will be used to help recover Texas’ most endangered bird

and the habitat it depends on.

Memorial benches are a wonderful way to honor your friend or loved one, as well as create a tangible and comfortable place for them to be memorialized. Each bench is 6’ long and made of recycled plastic lumber. Up to three lines of text can be engraved with the donor’s personalized message. Each bench sponsorship is $1,500. Contact Kelly Thompson at 324-437-4692 for more information, or email [email protected]

Animal: Attwater’s Prairie ChickenScientific name:Tympanuchus cupido attwateriNative habitat: Gulf coastal plains and prairies of Texas and Louisi-ana, now only found in Texas.

Size: It is a small grouse about the size of a domestic chicken

Diet: Insects, buds, grasses and flowers

Conservation Status: Critically Endangered

Other information: More than a century ago, the Attwater’s prairie-chicken population was estimated to be up to a million birds. Today, there are less than 400 birds in the wild and captivity setting. Attwater’s prairie-chickens were once found on 6 million acres of prai-rie along the Gulf Coast. Today, less than one percent of coastal prairies remain and the Attwater’s prairie-chicken has been pushed to the edge of extinction. What makes these birds unique is their courtship activity; a male performs on a lek, or booming ground. Here, they gather each morning and evening from February through mid-May to perform an elaborate courtship ritual. The males inflate an air sac and emit a strange, “booming sound” while stomping their feet extremely fast in order to attract the females. When you vote for the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken at the Conservation Kiosk wells, funds will go to Friends of Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Refuge to support the efforts to recover Texas’ own and one of North America’s most endangered birds. Funds will specifically go to the control of red imported fire ants that impact the survival of young birds on the Attwa-ter’s Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge. To learn more go to www.attwater.org or visit www.fws.gov/refuge/Attwater_Prairie_Chicken/wildlife/APC.html.

As a zoo veterinarian one of the questions I am often asked this question: “Do animals get the same diseases that people get?” And they sure do! For that reason, our zoo veterinary clinic has to be ready to handle all sorts of animal health problems. Just like people go to their doctor for routine check-ups, our animals are given routine exams and vaccinations to keep them healthy. One difference is that our animals will not hold still (or always be nice) during exams, so we often must anesthetize them. That just means we give them medication to make them fall asleep for a short time. While the animal is sleeping, we are able to safely collect samples for various testing and examine all parts of the animal’s body. Preventative exams allow us to either ensure our animals are healthy or find illnesses early so we can provide treatment as needed. When the exam is over, we give another medication that causes the animal to awaken. As animals age, just like people, they can develop all kinds of diseases. Unlike people, our animals cannot tell us some-thing is wrong. They often hide that they are not feeling well for as long as possible. Therefore, it is important that our keepers closely monitor our animals for any abnormal behaviors that may indicate that the animal is not feeling well. If keepers notice something wrong, they alert the veterinary staff so we can perform a diagnostic physical exam to find out how to make the animal feel better. In the animal world, we also use a lot of the same equipment that human doctors use. Our hospital is equipped with a brand new digital x-ray system that gives us great pictures of an animal’s body. We also have a great ultrasound machine that allows us to look at all the animal’s organs. In addition, most of the medications we give our animals are the same medications people would take for the same reasons. In fact, sometimes we even use human pharmacies to fill prescriptions. So, in conclusion, there are many similarities to animal and human medical care. Here at the Abilene zoo, veterinary and keeper staff work together to ensure that all animals are happy and healthy throughout their entire lives.

E ach year, zoo supporters generously treat our animals to toys and enrichment items that they can use all year. To help with ideas, we set up an annual Giving Tree, located inside the Zoo’s gift shop, decorated with ornaments featuring a picture of a zoo animal along with a gift idea that would be appropriate for that animal. Visitors can either take the ornament off the tree, purchase the item listed and turn it in at the gift shop or make a monetary donation in the gift shop. Items on the Giving Tree range in price from $1 to over $500. If you are interested in supporting the Animal Behavioral Programs at the Abilene Zoo and wish to donate training or enrichment items, please contact Liz Kellerman at 325-437-4696 or [email protected].

A Wish List for the zoo is located on the Abilene Zoo’s website at www.abilenezoo.org. There is also a year-round wish list with www.amazon.com, where visitors can purchase items and have them shipped directly to the Abilene Zoo. Just search for “Abilene Zoo” in the wish list section.
