Editor’s Pick – Page 16

I could look at Karen’s journal page for hours,

and STILL see new details! This journal

page is simply stunning!

Happy New Year! Yes, I know this will reach you in December, but as it’s our January issue I’m wishing you all a big welcome to 2016! May your year be filled with creativity!

We have so much artistry to share with you this month. I don’t use that word lightly! I’m a firm believer that we are ALL artists, even if a lot of you don’t think so. I looked up the dictionary definition of art, and it said: “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form… producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty.”

So, to me that means that if we create something that we or others think is beautiful, then it’s art. And you lot all do that on a daily basis, so in my eyes you’re all artists! So there!

We are showcasing lots of wonderful wintery creations this month, not least our fabulous winter dioramas in the 3D challenge (page 32). Created in collaboration with Tando, these are simply stunning!

If you like working with clay, then Tracy Easson is sharing the cutest little village on page 22. These would look wonderful covered in snow as part of your winter décor.

I’m so pleased to share part one of our new ‘Whimsical Faces’ drawing tutorial series. (page 41). Tracy Scott is our expert, and she will lead you through the steps needed to create your own amazing art work. The pages are very conveniently positioned so you can lift them out to refer to whilst you work! In this part, Tracy guides us through face shapes and feature positioning… I can’t wait for part two!

We also have canvases, fabric makes, die cutting and heat embossing in this issue, so lots of variety for everyone! Have a wonderfully crafty month, all you ARTISTS out there!

Wonderful Winter Wall ArtCreate a fun, mixed media wall hanging to remind you of the beauty of winter. By Hermine Koster

Start your project by making your background using gelli plate printing and different colours and stencils. Use whatever you like, but don’t make the pattern too busy, as you’ll want to add

more elements on top.

Start to stamp images on seperate pieces of paper and vellum and create die cuts. Move around and play with the composition before glueing the pieces down. This process allows you to add and take away any elements before permanent construction.

When I think of winter, I think of icy blues and whites, but to give the piece a little more depth, I used deep purple and a hint of silver to add a little sparkle. By using vellum you can also create subtle layer of dimension without losing the images and colours underneath.

Dreaming of SpringLooking forward to Spring? Create a quirky textured canvas to while away the time! By Magda Polakow

When I think about winter I always think about cold, darkness and lots of layers. It sounds horrible but it isn’t, winter in the countryside covered with snow is lovely!

I wanted this canvas to look like my kind of winter. There are some signs of cold – touches of frost and snowflakes, a crochet jumper, crackle paste and lots of white. Elements of darkness - black trees and edging, and to represent countryside – my cute little squirrel.

When I think about winter layers I think about warm clothes, but also layers on the ground – soil, plants covered by leaves and then snow on top of it. I used these seasonal layers as inspiration and applied at least seven layers onto my project.

At the centre of the canvas is a beautiful bright patch – a squirrel’s dream of spring...

In the Details...

To create various textures in my project I stenciled patterns with crackle paste and stamped into wet Whipped Spackle. The combination adds a subtle crispy background effect.

I used Glossy Accents to create my dark Christmas trees. I applied Glossy Accents to the first dark layer and left to dry. The final contrast of black and

white snow has a strong visual impact.

“New Year already! I’ve created a front cover for my new 2016 journal. It’s a busy

mixed media collage with intricate details to surprise

We asked our Design Team some questions about their practice. We’ll be sharing their answers over the next few issues.

This month’s question: What is your day job? Do you take any skills from that over into your crafting life or vice versa?

“I work as a midwife in a hospital. It’s a stressful job, so crafting helps me to unwind. It makes my head empty. Through my job and over the years I gained a lot of self-confidence. I know what I’m able to do. This helps me a lot in my crafting life as well.” - Anneke De Clerck

“I’m a cleaner at a local Fire Station and Primary School. Cleanliness would be what I take away from the workplace... forever cleaning up the children’s arty leftovers.” - Tracy Easson

“I’m so lucky that crafting is now my day job! I’ve done many things in the past and of those I’d say being a teacher has helped me most because you learn how to become a more effective communicator.” - Jenny Marples

One of our amazing readers, Linda Nicholls has crafted this adorable card using the doodle bloom stamp given out free with the September issue. We just love her ingenious use of the stamp!

“I hope the card that I made with the September free stamp will make you smile! The flowers were turned upside down and a face was drawn on each one. The bird was made from the leaf part by adding a couple of lines.”

Have you made an exciting project recently? We would love to see your creations!

A Village in Tobermory Using air dry clay, paint and a few tools, you too can make a whimsical dream village to escape to! By Tracy Easson

Taking inspiration from a place called Tobermory where the brightly coloured houses stand out even on the gloomiest of days, my village was born.

At the heart of the village stands the church, filled with the voices of angels. If you peek through the long stained glass windows made from painted air dry clay, I’m sure you will see them!

Next door is the village hall with it’s quirky roof in need of repair; the village is trying to raise money by holding cake sales, tombolas and ceilidhs. At the end of the lane you will come across the family home of the local potter, it's always a hive of activity with pots large and small either being made, fired or painted.

Who would have thought that a few doodles on paper followed by rolling out the clay, stamping into the clay and using water to hold the walls and roof together, would result in a little village with a story to tell.

Meet the designer:Tracy Easson“I’m a happy, messy, painty crafter living in a world that spins far too quickly. When I’m not at work you will find me in my shed surrounded by paints, brushes, stamps and pretty papers.”

In the Details...

Create an inspiration board with doodles, details, colours and textures as a quick reference.

I stamped onto the clay and then added more detail by stamping it with a tear

shaped cookie cutter.

I wanted to create the look of a roof that needed a repair, so I folded the clay back on itself while it was workable.

Three Important Words By Magda PolakowThere are plenty of materials which can be used as a base for a hanger - MDF, wood or even cardboard. I used a piece of 3” x 6” MDF as my base. I painted it with a few colours of acrylic paints and then added paper shapes and paint markers to finish it.

The tricky thing is integrating the paper into the design to make sure it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. I usually apply paint around the paper shapes or use watercolour pencils to add shadows. I then used the same products for colouring my stamp to finish.

“I love cute creatures on my accessories. Bright objects, full of colours and funny.

That’s why I try to make projects like this.”

Wintery and fun, Magda’s little polar bear is a bear for all seasons and could be used in a variety of exciting projects. Madga and Trish have put him to the test and here’s where you can discover some of their

sensational art work.

The focal point of this bookmark project is the bear. I stamped the bear on to paper and cut it into a strip shape, to create a bookmark. I drew the rest of the picture around the bear using a thin black pen. As I knew I wanted to use watercolours to add colour, I used a water and fade proof pen. I used Sakura Micron and Uni Pin Fine Line. I then coloured my illustration using a few colours of Derwent Inktense pencils mixed with water.

When the background was dry I redefined the images with a black pen. To add interest, between my the bookmark and heavier paper, I sewed a piece of fabric.

Designer Tip…If you haven’t got an

MDF plaque, you could upcycle an old book

cover.

Hide and Seek By Trish LatimerOnce I decided the bear looked like he was hiding behind the flower, the composition of this piece just seemed to fall into place! I created a smeared paint background, then added layers of interest with collage stamping, stencilling and splatters of melted UTEE. I stamped the bear onto watercolour paper five times using Archival ink, then cut out the flower from four of the images. I used watercolour pencils for my colouring, and added dots using a sharpie paint pen. Once the images were glued to the background, I added in my typed phrase.

#sweet By Trish LatimerThe bear is so cute and small, I wanted to create a cute and small piece of wall art! Working on a small scale can be a challenge, but if you scale down your usual background techniques to fit the space, it works really well. I measured the inside of the shadow box, then cut out a piece of card to fit. This card was then decorated in my favourite smeared paint way, and the bear added in as the focal point. I stamped the bear five times, then used just the hearts from four of the images to add a little extra love!

Designer Tip…Archival Ink is

waterproof, so works wonderfully when colouring stamped images with water

soluble media!

3D Challenge

Doorway to Narnia by Katy LeitchMy plan was to create a winter project that wasn’t Christmassy. I was initially struggling for ideas, so out on a walk with the dog I chatted to my husband about it – “what do you think of when I say winter?” I asked. “Narnia” he said. And so my Art Room just had to become a wardrobe leading to a magical land… I used a piece of Tando 6” x 6” chipboard to make a pair of doors to fit the aperture which I attached with hinges. The wardrobe exterior is stamped with a woodgrain background and inside I built up layers to create my scene – each of the elements has a frosting of ‘snow’ (modelling paste topped with fine glitter) to add to the wintry feel. Look closely and you can see Mr. Tumnus popping out from behind a tree!

Thereʼs Snow Place Like HomeBy Tando Designer Karen GistThe top sections of the Art Room were painted with Cobalt Teal Hue and splattered with White Linen. The trees were stamped and embossed onto card and painted with Cobalt Teal Hue and Dioxazine Purple.

The igloo was made from a deodorant top which was covered with paper before being covered in a thick layer of modelling paste. I also used the paste to create soft snowy peaks surrounding the igloo. The paste elements were then painted white and dabbed gently with a mixture of Cobalt and White and Glamour Dust was added to develop a delicate surface sheen. Lace and trim were added to finish and the sentiment was computer generated and glued in place.

Using the Art Room by Tando Creative, our designers have produced some stunningly intricate, winter themed three dimensional art work. So many

exciting elements can be incorporated into this versatile display box and the base material will hold a mixture of media. The Art Room is a great little display base for a range of projects. The kit is flat packed and easily slots together to create a sturdy piece for all your mixed media needs.

The Art Room is available to buy from Tando Creative for only £2.40 each. Visit www.tando-creative.co.uk/catalog/room-blank-p-856.html for more details.

Winter in the City By Anna-Karin EvaldssonThis shadow box was so fun to work with and you can fit a lot of dimensional items into it. I also really like the half circle in front of the box, since that gives you even more space to construct an exciting three dimensional piece. In my winter scene, a boy is coming home to his apartment building after a day of ice skating.

The background was created by covering the chipboard with gesso and then continuing with Distress paint, stamping and stencilling. The snow was created with texture paste and sprinkled with Rock Candy Glitter. I also used paste around the edges of the box to cover up the joints.

The house was made from two die cut match boxes glued together and covered with decorative tape. I cut the windows by hand and used mica for the windows and lace for the curtains.

Frosted Frolicking By Tando Designer Carol PlumeGrunge paste was stenciled onto the bare chipboard and painted using acrylic paint. The entire piece was then stamped with the large text stamp (ESN10) from PaperArtsy and white paint. The large back piece was stamped with Snowflakes from Tim Holtz and embossed and glittered.

Once constructed, darker acrylic paint was added around the edges and ‘snow’ was added. Snowflakes were die punched from Clearly for You and frosted film coloured with Distress ink. Crazy Birds were stamped onto shrink plastic and shrunk down to size. Crafty Individuals stamp, CI-399, was stamped and the focal image was attached to the side to complete the composition.

The Owl Nest By Tando Designer Di OliverI have a love for all things natural, so I decided to create a tree effect with my Art Room. The outside has been covered with corrugated paper on the front and I have used generous amounts of Cosmic Shimmer embossing crystals over DecoArt acrylic paint.

I hand drew the owls, mounted them on to card and fixed them to the inside of the Tando Art Room base. I stamped a tree branch using a PaperArtsy Jofy stamp to place across the front. To finish, some branches from my garden were placed over the Snowtex covered Modroc foreground.

Winter Wonderland By Anneke De ClerckI love making mini winter scenes. I’m always on the hunt for suitable objects to put in a diorama. I bought the deer at a flea market but simple things from around the house can be used too. As you can see, left over grape stems make perfect little trees. I first trimmed a stem into a tree shape, then painted the stem with gesso and modelling paste and finished off with Stickles. I then used paper clay to secure the tree. The tree in front was coloured using Dylusions Ink Spray. I decorated the shadowbox with a crackle technique.

I coloured the sky with Distress ink and a blending tool. I love the beautiful gradient you can achieve by sponging with this ink. I stamped trees on top and white heat embossed for a wintery look.

I used the Sparkle & Shine stamp set that I designed for WOW! Embossing Powder to create graphical looking elements. I repeatedly stamped the designs to create intricate patterns. By colouring in the patterns with just two colours and adding some sparkle with heat embossing, I made the pages cohesive, while at the same time keeping them all slightly different.

I browsed She Art on Pinterest to find text that I liked. For my art journals, an important part of the process is finding quotes and texts that are encouraging and positive because it makes me enjoy the process of stamping or writing them out even more.

Q

QAThis issue we introduce you to the wonderfully whimsical mixed media artist, Alix Swan.

Artist inResidence

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background as a maker?

A: I can’t remember a time when I was not drawing, cutting, sticking and making little books and illustrations. In the final year of my Degree, I branched out into 3D illustration and when I did my Masters Degree, I found all the elements came together to produce a collection that now ranges from small book works to individual one-off pieces. All my work has a running ‘story’ theme and each piece is made by me. I cut, sew and assemble everything by hand using my treasure trove of found and second-hand materials.

Q: Your work is clearly very narrative, do you let stories guide you or do you try to wander from the traditional ideas to create something completely new?

A: My work is very guided by story and narrative. All the text I use comes directly from original stories. I use quotations from early texts to retell stories in a snap shot. There is a theory that the adult that reads to you as a child will change bits of the story to suit you and, of course, not everyone will have been read the same version. So the idea of my work is to echo ideas and phrases that are universally familiar and remind you of cosy story times.

Q: How long does it take you to make one of your beautiful paper dolls? And which stage in the creative process do you find most interesting?

A: My paper dolls can take over five hours to make depending on how many extra elements there are to add! All will have rag hair sewn on, but some have shoes, socks, hands, a crown, an apron, a hat, lips or maybe a petticoat. My most ambitious doll to date has been Mary Poppins; she has everything I have ever added and more, taking almost seven hours! I enjoy figuring out how to make the vision I have in my head come to life and I also love it when all the elements come together.

NEW regular: Artist In Residence

Q: Are your chosen fairy tales and stories favourites of yours from your own childhood?

A: The stories I choose are not always stories from my childhood but ones I have revisited as an adult. I like early text as I enjoy the language and phrases that are used. It is the elements of imagination and worlds they create that produce my childhood feelings towards my pieces and there is always a bit of me in each of them.

Q: Do you have a favourite piece you just can’t bear to let go of?

A: I always find it hard to let go of my larger pieces of work. I’ve spent longer on them and they become familiar and sometimes a ‘friend’, but the piece that I will never part with is the original paper doll I made at art school. Alice sits on a shelf in my studio slowly being more loved and cherished everyday, I never forget it all started with her!

Q: What advice do you have for emerging designer makers working with mixed media?

A: The best advice I can give is enjoy your materials! Whatever the particular project I am working on will tell me the right material to use, or if I fall over something when I am ‘treasure hunting’ I will know it is perfect for a particular piece. Be unique! I have a particular eclectic style which is recognisably mine and I’m not seeking to reproduce what has gone before but love to find a new twist on things.

Project: Whimsical Faces Part One

Face up to Your Fears Tracy Scott_CSJAN16.indd 41 3/11/15 15:12:04

1 To draw a basic face, first start by drawing an upside down egg shape onto your page. Flatten the sides of the face to create a more realistic look (if you look in the mirror you will see that between hairline and jawbone, it is a straight line). Using your ruler, measure the halfway points both horizontally and vertically and draw in the lines so that they cross in the middle (eventually you will learn to do this by eye). The vertical line (A) indicates the middle of the face and the horizontal line indicates the eye line (B).

2 Next we need to think about adding in lines where the nose and mouth will sit on our face. Using your ruler, measure the halfway point between the eyeline and chin and draw in a horizontal line; this will be the line where the bottom of the nose sits (use this line as an indicator to where the jawline will start and adjust the outside lines). This is horizontal line C.To measure the line for the mouth you will need to divide the vertical line between the nose line and chin into three. Draw a horizontal line on the measurement one third down, this will be the line where the centre of the mouth will sit. This is horizontal line D.

3 Now that we have our basic proportion lines in place we can get to the exciting bit and start to put in some features. The placement of eyes seems to be a real sticking point for lots of people (too high, too far apart etc), however now that you have your eyeline in place you are already halfway there! To get the correct spacing in between the eyes is simple, you just need to lightly draw one eye that goes across the centre lines (your face now looks like a cyclops), then draw in two more eyes which are identically sized to the central eye on each side.

4 Noses also seem to present a problem when learning how to draw them (we will cover drawing them in a later tutorial) and also proportioning them correctly on a face. You already have a horizontal line where the bottom of your nose will sit; on this line, draw a small circle over the central line and then to each side of this, draw small ovals for nostrils. The overall width of the nose should be equal to the width of the central eye. This now forms the base of your nose as is perfectly situated in relation to the other features on the face.

5 Moving on to the placement of the lips on the face. Lips come in all different shapes and sizes, but for the purpose of this exercise we are assuming average proportions. We already have the horizontal line where the top and bottom of the lips will meet (this is line D). Just above the lip line, draw a small v shape where the points meet on the central line. The width of the lips should be the same as the nose and the central eye, so mark this point on your lip line and draw down diagonally either side of the v shape, creating the corners of the mouth. The bottom of the lips can then be added just be sure to make them slightly deeper than the other lip.

6 All of your features are now in place, this will enable you to put in the ears and neck. The ears typically sit between the eyeline and the nose line. Often these will be covered up in your final piece with hair but it is useful to know where they should sit should you need to include them. For the neck, using your ruler, draw a vertical line from the outside of the eyes on each side down past the jawline and continue off the face, this will be where you will indicate the neck line.

Project: Whimsical Faces Part One

Face up to Your Fears Tracy Scott_CSJAN16.indd 43 3/11/15 15:13:36

Next time... Learn how to add shape, detail and colour to the eyes to bring them to life! Part Two of Tracy’s Creating Faces series will feature in the February 2016 issue, on sale January 1st!

“So you think you can’t draw a face?... I used to think that too. Do you look at the whimsical faces popping up in

everyone’s art journals and social media sites and stare longingly, wishing you

could make work like that?... Well, I learnt how, so you can too! It’s much simpler than

it looks when it’s broken down. I’ll show you fool proof tips and techniques that will

have you creating your own beautifully proportioned faces from the very first try!”

Meet the designer:Tracy Scott“When I am not at the ‘day job’ as a Finance Officer in East London, I’m obsessed by all things bright, painty, inky and messy!”

Top Tips:

1 This basic proportioning applies to any shaped face, for a more whimsical look, try applying these proportions to a round face.

2 Once you have the basic proportioning under your belt, play around with it, create bigger eyes, a smaller nose and mouth etc to start creating your own characters and style.

3 Practice, practice, practice. You wouldn’t expect to jump in the sea for the first time and swim the channel would you?

BACKGROUND HISTORY…

My inspiration came from seeing the graffiti

art on the Berlin wall. It’s fun, colourful and truly inspiring - well worth

taking a look at.

What A Dreamer Jane Drake_CSJAN16.indd 45 3/11/15 14:57:30

Altering a canvas is so much fun but turning it over and using the reverse side can be even better. I really enjoyed creating this piece, from the initial doodles to creating an explosion of musical elements.

For this project I wanted to use as much colour as possible because, let’s face it, the winter months can be a bit dark and dismal. I think an injection of colour is just the thing to pull anyone out of the gloom. As well as colour, I found inspiration in the image of the girl; having three daughters of my own I can totally identify with the young girl dreaming her life away.

Doodling is a big trend right now, which makes me very happy indeed. At the moment, my favourite medium of choice is the Posca paint pen. It is fantastic for adding a pop of colour over most surfaces, so it’s perfect for use on a journal. The opaque paint creates amazing coverage and they come in a variety of nib sizes. I’ve been using the white and black in journals for a while but only recently discovered the fabulous range of colours they come in. They’re the perfect choice for my doodled frame.

“Colour therapy is very powerful and winter projects don’t always have to

be monochromatic. I find if I play and paint with bright colour it lifts my mood and I stop moaning about the weather

outside my studio window!”

DESIGNER TIP…

Doodling keeps everything loose and un-fussy so you don’t have to be too hung up on perfect lines

and shapes.

1 Cover canvas with torn text paper using gel medium. When dry, coat with white acrylic paint.

2 Doodle around frame with paint pens and extend over the edges in places.

3 Stamp bubbles background onto text, paint with white acrylic and colour bubbles with coloured pens.

4 Stamp girl twice and cut out the hand, legs and bag on one of the images. Colour with Inktense watercolour pencils.

5 Layer the two girls and place on the edge of the canvas frame as if she’s leaning against the side.

6 Spray both sides of the music shapes with colour and glue to the frame with 3D gel.

To finish the project: When arranging the music notes, make it look as though they’re exploding from the girls mind and out from the canvas. To make them stand out, I used a white pen to add highlights.

Write the word dreamer in a graffiti style on white card with Posca pens and fussy cut around it. Glue down to the background.

Finally, give the girl something to rest her feet on; I cut a piece of twig from the garden which was just thin enough to slip under her feet.

Why noT Try?

Layering the girl even more to make her really stand out. Stamp and cut the image three or four times and end up

with the shoes as a top layer.

Inspired by Pinterest photographs of Christmas upcycled bakeware, I was looking to create a piece with a winter theme that could be displayed through the colder months.

At this time of year I want to create a frosty, icy finish in cool colours whilst also using up bits and bobs left over from other projects. This piece is ideal for just that. Lots of different types of stamps can come into their own on a project like this. I’ve used a bare tree stamp and a little row of houses stamp from Hobby Art on two of my substrates as they’re the perfect fit for my recesses.

This is the ideal project to include your bargain charity shop treasures; I’d been saving a gorgeous vintage brooch. Charity shops are a great resource for cheap old jewellery, which can be broken down into tiny pieces of sparkle to add a touch of luxury to your Christmassy makes.

Cotton gauze was applied with Golden Heavy Matte Gel and chunky vintage glass glitter, tiny beads and mica

1 Cut two pieces of fabric. Draw on body, head and hair using fine line pen.

2 Sketch eyes, nose and mouth. Large, wide set eyes work well.

3 Colour face and hair with Promarkers. Outline and add detail using black Promarker.

Step–by–step... Stuff ed Fabric Angel

My starting point for this project was on paper not fabric. I tried sketching out different shaped bodies and faces to see if I could find my angel. Like any of my face or figure artwork, I rarely have a vision

of them before I start. They tend to appear on the page and my quirky angel was no different.

Once my angel had appeared, I felt safe enough to draw her onto fabric. But, what to colour with? I decided it was time to dust off my alcohol pens. They work well on fabric, as long as you factor in the bleed of the ink. As long as you press very lightly with the dark colours and don’t work too close to the lines, they are great for colouring fabric quickly.

Even better, there is virtually NO drying time with alcohol ink pens. Great for us impatient crafters and it meant I could plough straight into stitching her together.

The characters expressions can easily be altered by the position/direction of the iris and pupil in their eyes. Finally, to give you some idea of scale, the largest angel is 20cm (8 inches) and the smallest is 14cm (5 ½ inches) tall.

7 Randomly stamp images onto body using Stazon ink.

8 Pin together two coloured angels with right sides facing in.

9 Stitch around angel, leaving base open and trim fabric to ½ cm (1/4 inch).

10 Turn right sides out. Stuff firmly and stitch bottom seams together.

11 Draw a pair wings onto two layers of fabric and stitch together.

12 Cut around stitched wings and stamp all over using sentiment.

To finish the project: After making the wings, I attached them using black safety pins. The halo was simply made by twisting two strands of flexible wire together. This was secured

by stitching it onto the seam lines either side of the angels head. As you can see, I also used the black safety pins as an embellishment, along with a

stripey button.

The fabric I used was from an old

Christmas in the 50’sWe showcase a collection of gorgeously retro designs, following this issue’s theme of ‘Christmas in the 50’s’.

Christmas in the 50ʼs By Jane TyrellI love retro Christmas cards and wanted to use 1950’s inspired colours to create a misty forest scene. Cards in those days were always stylised, so a blue deer and trees would not have been out of place!

I swiped mixed media card through watered down Antique Linen Distress ink and once dry, I added different colours to each tree and stamped onto the card at different heights. I also made separate trees which I then cut out. The front panel was swiped through watery Abandoned Coral ink. I then layered up using foam tape and clear embossed the deer and sentiment to give them texture and clarity. The Merry Christmas sentiment has a retro font so was perfect for finishing off my card.

Merry & BrightBy Chrissie StokesThe reindeer and tree images were stamped and heat embossed, then die cut with matching dies. The front panel was first cut with the stitched rectangle and then the stitched circle die, creating a large window. The backing panel was embossed using the Snowfall embossing folder, producing a delicate bumpy snow texture.

To finish, the collage was arranged to give the appearance of the reindeer jumping out of the aperture, with the sentiment added beneath.

To a Deer FriendBy Ren LohUsing one Distress ink pad, stamp with varying pressure to give depth and tone to the forest. Add dimension by die cutting an oval in the centre of the scene. Use the Ranger Mini Ink Blending Tool to round off the rectangle corners and create a retro faded effect.

Adhere the rectangle piece to the card base using foam tape and attach the oval cut out with double sided tape. On top of the two, add the reindeer and sleigh cut outs, this adds subtle dimension to the piece and brings it to life.

Retro ReindeerBy Joanne AllisonRepeat stamping a small motif to make a repeat pattern is an easy way to create a background with a retro feel. I used two different sized snowflakes on alternate lines and then overstamped tiny deep brown snowflakes on top of them and finished the centres with a dot of pearl paint.

Distress glitter has the slightly aged, shabby chic feel of retro ornaments, making it perfect for the reindeer on this card – who would guess he started life as a cereal packet?

Classic Christmas By Ulrike DellingerThe theme, Christmas in the 50’s, conjured up images of a coffee bar with a jukebox playing classic Christmas songs.

Die cut the cardstock parts and stamp the music sheet background with Pale Ochre. Heat emboss the jukebox with Espresso powder onto white watercolour paper and Espresso cardstock. Colour jukebox on the watercolour paper with markers and a wet brush. Add a sparkle with the Wink of Stella Brush pens. Cut out and mat the jukebox onto the embossed Espresso cardstock with foam tape. Emboss the Christmas lettering and adhere the ‘dreaming of a white’ rub on. Embellish using enamel dots and a star brad. Assemble as shown. Finally highlight the silver parts of the jukebox with Glossy Accents.

Nifty Fiftyʼs Christmas FunBy Jerrie Mead and Julie Mead A blast from the past! What fun it is to create baubles from the 50’s. The colour from the Copic marker was pulled in from the edge of the bauble with a 0 Copic marker, leaving lighter colour on the inside of the bauble. A glitter gel pen was used over the colour in the center of the bauble to create a silvery sheen. The image of people riding a toboggan was coloured in and glitter was added to capture the glistening snow. Twine adorns the top of the card and clear Doubleclick Skittles were added to create more dimension to this Christmas from the 50’s fun.

White ChristmasBy Kerstin-Inga PetersWhen I think about Christmas in the 50’s, I close my eyes and I can still hear the sound of the Bing Crosby’s wonderful song ‘White Christmas’; that was my inspiration for this little card.

Firstly I stamped the reindeer and Christmas baubles with Spiced Chai StazOn ink and then stamped and white embossed the snowflakes. Once dry, I used blue and brown Distress ink pads and a blending tool, sprayed with water and left to dry. To create a dimensional, shimmering snow effect on the front, I used a snow writer and silver glitter. Finally, I inked my Santa hat with Distress ink for a vintage look and glued on top of the tree.

Crimson StagBy Lydia Brooke EvansI cut two layers of white cardstock using the scalloped frame dies from the Audrey Cutaways set. I added the larger one onto my card blank and used the other to stamp on.

I stamped the stag head using Raspberry Jam ink and added extra antlers. With more antlers, there is more space to add the hanging bells. I stamped the bells with turquoise ink before stamping the circle of dots in cream around the deer head to create a frame.

After stamping, I coated the elements with the Wink Of Stella pen and Glossy Accents, giving an enamelled finish. The sentiment was stamped in brown onto a strip of card and adhered to the finished card.

Normally when using alcohol ink markers, I reach for smooth cardstock in order to achieve a perfectly blended finish, but for this effect, smoothly blended colouring was the last thing I

wanted, so instead I used watercolour cardstock.

By using a watercolour cardstock combined with fine, flicking motions of the tip of the brush of the Copics, I was able to lay colour down without it immediately blending and softening into the cardstock.

Nevertheless, if each layer is not blended slightly it can look too harsh, so I begin with my darkest marker and worked through to the lightest, overlapping the colours.

With a strange colour combination, it can look odd until a Distress marker, in a complementary colour, is run through all the Copic colours to tie it together. If you’ve chosen to keep to a safe colour palette by introducing ‘Distress marker veining’ in another colour, it can then lift the colour scheme. The beauty of adding veining is that, as Distress markers are dye based, they don’t react with Copics in any way, so the colours don’t become muddy.

This issue, three amazing designers have put the Universal stamp set by Visible Image to the test. Being a versatile set of six funky background stamps, the designers have had a lot of freedom to create totally one-off pieces.

The Universal set includes sketchy Galaxy star, Galaxy Swirl, Orbital Circles, Plasma Circle and Plasma Ball designs. The abstract stamps could be used to create so many different effects, there are infinite possibilities, just waiting to be discovered!

The Universal stamp set, priced at £9.99 and many other fab designs are available from Visible Image. Log on to www.visibleimage.co.uk for more details.

The Design Team have been busy crafting unique designs using some exciting background stamps by Visible Image.

Adventure Waitsby Georgie ConnellyThe best thing about background stamps is the artistic licence that comes with them. You can be as messy and creative as you want! With this sea themed background, I started with black ink, embossed with white, and then again with a lovely rich blue, creating contrast, depth and a touch of shimmer.

I used the stamps again to come back over the layered section to tie the background and foreground together. Finishing up with some small embellishments and twine completes the page.

CREATEby Georgie ConnellyThis tag was created using the stamps in a similar way to the scrapbook page project, with regular ‘messy’ ink stamping and heat embossing.

Overall, I wanted a slightly softer feel by comparison, so I swapped the black ink for brown and added a touch of torn crochet lace. Hints of sea sparkle were added using glitter glass and to finish up, I used a Derwent Inktense pencil in Ink Black for shading and definition.

MaterialsINKS: Ranger Jet Black Archival; Ranger Distress Inks – Blueprint Sketch; Faded Jeans; Vintage Photo. OTHER: PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Paints – Snowflake; Blue Oyster; Glass Blue; Sizzix Thinlits Die – Adventure Words Script; Derwent Pastel Pencils – Burnt Carmine; Indigo; Kingfisher Blue; Sharpie Paint Pen – White; tea-stained book pages; twine; seam binding; tracing paper.

Designer tip…Use up the ink with

second and even third generation stamping, using your fingers to give more or less pressure as you hit the paper for an organic and

random look.

Blooming Canvasby Georgina FordI used the Universal stamp set for both the background and main floral images of my canvas. For the background I used the spot circle stamp. I white heat embossed blue card with the stamp and tore it up and added to the canvas background. I then added paint, blue tissue and stamped directly onto the canvas with paint.

The mixture of stamp styles makes them ideal for producing a quirky selection of flowers. Using a brayer, I created a Masterboard with yellow, orange and red paints. I then stamped the images with Jet Black Archival ink, stamping the star stamp twice to create the spiky bloom.

Floral Tagby Georgina FordThe tag background was created the same way as the canvas. I used two different circle stamps to create one large flower. The scribble circle was the ideal stamp to create the petals, as the busy lines give the impression of multiple petals and delicate texture. I created one large flower for the tag and I cut it into three pieces before attaching in different areas of the tag to develop a repeat pattern.

MaterialsINKS: Archival – Jet Black ink pad; VersaMark. OTHER: 15 x 15cm canvas; tag; PaperArtsy Fresco Finish paint – Cheesecake; Yellow Submarine; Tango; London Bus; Smurf; Bora Bora; Tinned Peas; Ranger – Multi Matte Medium; small brayer; WOW! Embossing Powder – Bright Opaque White; tissue paper – blue; green; Sharpie pen – black; white ribbon; corrugated card.

Designer tip…Stamp and cut out

a selection of shapes. Move them around and

see what other interesting flower shapes you

can create.

“I like to think of the background as a series of layers, each one overlapping the previous one adding more detail, but still allowing each layer to show through.”

A Plaque for Courageby Visible Image Designer Teresa MorganI primed the plaque with gesso and added modelling paste before colour washing with spray ink and wiping away the excess with a damp cloth. The words are stamped directly onto the wood and heat embossed before adding the background stamps using the same process as before. I then used one of the background stamps to create my border, stamping and embossing small sections at a time.

Altered Mannequinby Visible Image Designer Teresa MorganAfter gluing the torso, spool and coaster together to create the mannequin, I applied two coats of gesso. Texture was created using both modelling paste and crackle paste over masked areas. I used ink spray, paints and antiquing cream to create the base background colour and began my stamping.

I created a layered effect by randomly stamping one design at a time and embossing all over the piece. I kept changing stamps and embossing powders and repeating until I was happy. The words were stamped onto tissue paper and applied with Mod Podge. I added Stickles to give some extra sparkle to the words and spool base, then finished with some fancy trim.

MaterialsSTAMPS: Visible Image – Stay Strong; Smile Sparkle Shine. INKS: Versamark. OTHER: Creativ Company – Paper Mache Torso; wooden spool; coaster; Araldite epoxy resin; DecoArt – White Gesso; Modelling Paste; Crackle Paint; Black Antiquing Cream; Silver Paint; Dutch Doobadoo Mask; Burlap; Dylusions – London Blue Spray Ink; Cosmic Shimmer; Blue Watercolour Paint; WOW! Embossing Powder – Silver; White; Pink; Blue; Ranger Stickles – Silver; white tissue paper; flower trim; beads; charm; wooden plaque; Crafters Workshop Mask – Circle Explosion.

Designer tip…When stamping onto an uneven or curved

surface, mount the stamp onto a piece of acetate

instead of an acrylic block to allow you to flex it

while stamping.

The Sizzix Bigz Owl #2 die can cut a whole range of different materials including paper, metal, fabric or cardboard,

so it’s great for using in a variety of different mixed media projects. You could use it to make a mixed media owl plushie or maybe an owl-shaped mini-album.

You don’t have to use just the die-cut shapes either, you can also use the negative shapes from the die cutting in your projects. I did exactly that to create an owl stencil to use on my frosted owl composition.

Once you have cut out your pieces in different materials, you can mix and match the owl parts to add even more interest and texture to the final project.

Iron Bondaweb onto the back of a piece of calico before cutting it with the Owl #2 die to make two eye circles. Stamp one of the Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous: Classics #4 stamps in Raw Sienna and Titanium White paint on of one of the denim bodies.

Use the stamp again with Raw Umber onto a calico circle. Iron the two calico eyes onto the stamped denim owl body and stitch two black lines with a sewing machine. Add a hand-stitched beak and pin the two denim owl bodies together. Stitch a border around the owls, leaving the bottom open, fill with stuffing and stitch the bottom seam closed. Add the stamped circle, a little denim banner, the wings and the buttons.

Main Project:Prepare the background with strips of old book pages, layers of gesso and acrylic paint. Scribble into the still wet background with a brush handle. Once dry, place a die cut owl stencil onto the background and add a mixture of Raw Sienna and Regular Gel medium to the centre of the stencil. Mix Raw Umber and Regular Gel medium and add this around the edges of the stencil. Add texture to the owl using a palette knife and remove stencil.

When dry, add white and Raw Sienna paint over the texture. Cover a piece of grey board with old book pages, cut with Owl #2 die and colour two wings, pupils, beak and feet with Ranger Archival ink pads. Adhere features with Heavy Gel. Finish the piece with leaf stamps carved from Speedball Speedy-Carve stamped in paint in the top right-hand corner.

3D Challenge p.32

Anna-Karin Evaldsson has created a delightful little house to fit into her wintery city scene in 3D Challenge. Using two die cut match boxes and seasonal decorative tape, the house really comes alive – she’s even added curtains to the windows!

Georgie Connelly’s Stamping Contrasts on p.64

Using the Galaxy Swirl stamp and embossing powders, Georgie Connelly has added beautiful lapping waves to her nautical collage design. The nautical details are fantastic, with delicate white netting, anchors and this cute rope tie.

Free Stamp Makes on p.26

Hidden in the background of Magda Polakow’s brightly coloured bookmark for Free Stamp Makes, are these whimsical cloud houses. The intricate roof tiles and uniform windows were drawn in fine black pen after colouring with watercolours.

What a Dreamer on p.45

To add an explosion of music notes to her reverse canvas piece, Jaine Drake spray painted IndigoBlu Music – Altered Ego pieces with black paint and added highlights with a white Posca Pen. We love how they flow organically across the composition.

Teresa Morgan’s Stamping Contrasts on p.64

To develop the spontaneous surface pattern of her altered mannequin, Teresa Morgan has used layers of crackle paste, modelling paste, embossing powders and ink sprays. This has resulted in a gorgeous textured and coloured finish. Just stunning!

Take It, Make It Challenge Winner on p.80

For added interest, Amanda Pink has included a tiny, crackled finish bottle in her homely altered art for the Take It, Make It Challenge. We just love the old potion bottle style of the bottle, complete with miniature ‘love’ label.

Check out all the gorgeous details you missed from this month’s delectable makes!

In Art Journaling 3 – Bold Backgrounds, Kate creates seven stunning backgrounds using her trademark bright and vibrant colours. Shown step-by-step in real time, with details of the equipment and materials used, you can easily follow along.

Kate explains her thought process as she uses acrylic paints, ink sprays, stencils, rubber stamps, gesso and pastels to create balanced, cohesive, yet uncluttered backgrounds. Simple, but effective, mixed-media techniques include blending, sponging, spraying, stencilling, spritzing and scraping and rubber stamping.

By the end of this DVD Kate fi nishes the backgrounds she needs for Art Journaling 4 – Personalised Pages, where she then adds the layers, details, images and journaling to make each page a deeply personal piece of art.

In Art Journaling 5 – Mix Up the Media, Kate Crane created beautiful pages to be used in her Junk Journal – a journal that combines art with the special memories locked up in photographs, letters and anything treasured.

In Junk It Up!, Kate uses doodling, images made from scanned backgrounds, rub-ons, collage, stamps, quotes and many other techniques to complete beautiful and highly individual journal pages, as well as pages with pockets to keep all those special mementos safe.

Kate then shows how to bind the pages together using front and back covers and a canvas spine to produce a very special Junk Journal – a book of memories just for you or to share with friends and loved ones.

But a journal need never be completely fi nished, and Kate shows how you can keep on adding more pages and elements whenever you want. Junk It Up! fi nishes with a gallery showing even more of Kate's inspirational journal pages.

Art Journaling is a wonderful way of releasing the artist inside you and producing a permanent and precious illustration of your innermost thoughts as well as the events, people and

places that mean the most to you. But like any artist, you may need a little help to overcome the fear of a blank page, and Kate Crane is the perfect guide as she shares the tips, techniques and skills that will energise your pages and let your imagination soar.

Kate begins with the equipment you need to start mixed-media art journaling, with a guide to the journal itself, as well as paints, inks, pens, stencils, rubber stamps, useful ‘junk’, and anything else you may need. She shows how to prepare your journal pages for mixed media, and how to handle and blend acrylic paints. There’s also a handy guide to colour theory where you’ll learn which colours go together and which don’t. Lastly, Kate shows how to add depth to your backgrounds by adding layer upon layer, with more acrylic paint, colour washes, ink sprays, stencils and rubber stamps.

Relax while you can, because Kate’s infectious enthusiasm for this fascinating art-form will soon have you reaching for your paints and inks to create vibrant, colourful and inspirational backgrounds for your journal.

Join Kate again in ‘Art Journaling – There are No Mistakes in Art!’ to learn how to add focal images and journaling to your backgrounds to create busy and yet cohesive pages.

Following the success of her Art Journaling 1 and 2 DVDs, Kate Crane presents another superb set of DVDs to take your art journaling into

an exciting new world of multi-layered colour and texture.

In Art Journaling 4 – Personalised Pages, Kate continues the pages from Art Journaling 3 – Bold Backgrounds and explores ways to add fi nishing touches, adding more colour, doodling, rubber stamping, digital collage images and even some hand-drawn elements, maintaining unity and cohesion on the page.

Amanda Pink is the winner of our September Take It, Make It Challenge! We fell in love with her beautifully homely piece of wall art. Using a mixture of subtle textures and colours, she has created a three dimensional art piece with nostalgic undertone of love and security.

“I wanted to make a piece of art that in essence would depict the words of the quote, which I absolutely love, and it evolved from there.”

Q: How long have you been a stamper, and how did you get started?

A: I first started using stamps about 4 years ago when I joined a local card making class. I knew right away it was something I enjoyed, even more so when I started to discover the huge variety of stamps available and the many ways in which they can be used. The endless possibilities to what could be created appealed to me very much and I soon became hooked.

Q: What are your favourite kinds of stamps, and do you have a favourite stamp company?

A: With so many stamps available it’s hard to single out one kind over another. I guess I have found it’s handy to have a good all round mix of stamps in my collection. I LOVE quote and sentiment stamps, especially when they are really meaningful. I find texture, detail and background stamps indispensable as they can totally transform a creation. Image stamps are a real must have too and when choosing these I tend to go for more mature, arty, grungy, quirky images.

Q: Describe your style, are you a messy kind of stamper or a more ‘clean and simple’ kind of person?!

A: I’m not sure I really have a style as such as I think it can be limiting to the creative process, but I guess on the whole my work does lean more to the messy, grungy side than the clean and simple. Every now and again though I like to change it up and create more clean and simply. My more recent work has seen me use much more colour than I ever used to and it really has been a refreshing change.

Q: What kind of projects do you like creating the most?

A: I just love the whole creative process, so I enjoy making almost anything from cards and tags, to altered art projects and art journaling (which I am just beginning to dabble in). As long as there are inks, paints, stamps, texture and techniques involved, I’m happy.

Q: Apart from stamps, what is the one product you wouldn’t be without when you craft?

A: Now that is a toughie as there are a few products I use pretty much all the time, regardless of what I am making. I have a real soft spot for Distress inks. They are such a versatile product, I use them to stamp, emboss, blend, and I love how you can create some fabulous effects when you mix them with water.
