Sergeant First Class John Wayne Walding

By Flat Dark Earth · Updated over a year ago

John Wayne has toured Afghanistan and Iraq, hunted grizzly bears in Alaska and earned the Silver Star; and as of July

16, John Wayne is the first prosthetic limbed soldier to graduate the Special Forces Sniper Course. Staff Sgt. John Wayne

Walding of Groesbeck, Texas, that is. In April 2008, Walding and nine other Special Forces soldiers from a 3rd Special

Forces Group (Airborne) assault team were attacked by the Hezeb Islami al Gulbadin while searching for insurgents in

Afghanistan’s Shok Valley. Walding, one of several team members who were injured, took a bullet through his right leg

under his knee. “I ripped off my boot lace and literally tied my leg to my thigh to keep it from flapping around,” Walding

said. Over the six-and-a-half hour firefight, more than 150 insurgents were killed. The members of the assault team were

each awarded the Silver Star in December 2008 for their courageous actions in Shok Valley. While recuperating, Walding

worked as an assistant instructor at 3rd SFG(A)’s sniper detachment at Fort Bragg. In order to become a full-time

instructor, he had to complete the Special Forces Sniper Course at SWCS. During the course, many of Walding’s

classmates didn’t know about his injury and prosthetic leg. Walding said he enjoyed his fellow soldiers’ reactions upon

learning about his missing leg. “At first, [my classmates] were shocked to realize I was missing a leg,” Walding said.

“Then, they realized ‘Wow, he’s doing everything I’m doing!’” After his injury, Walding knew he wasn’t going to give up and

leave the Army. He also didn’t want to spend the rest of his career behind a desk. “You don’t become a Green Beret

because you ‘kind of like it,’ you become a Green Beret because you love it, and can’t imagine being anything else,” he

said. Walding said he refused to lower his personal standards following his injury, and pushed himself to excel as an

instructor because he knew teams and soldiers were relying on him. Due to his past experiences, Walding said he has a

lot to offer as a member of a Special Forces team, and wouldn’t bother trying to get back to a team if he hadn’t felt he

could be an asset. The seven-week Special Forces Sniper Course teaches sniper marksmanship, semiautomatic

shooting, ballistics theory and tactical movement. Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Owens, an SFSC instructor in 2nd Battalion,

1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), emphasized the importance of these skills, and said it takes soldiers like

Walding to push themselves to the limits. “Snipers have become more dynamic over the past 10 years,” Owens said.

“Considering current operations overseas, snipers have never been more prevalent, because of the need for distance

shooting in rugged terrain.” Walding said he loves everything about training to be a sniper, particularly the mission, the

guns and the skill. He even enjoyed training during the hottest June ever recorded in North Carolina. “The skill of a

Special Forces sniper is unparalleled,” Walding said. “This is the most prestigious sniper school in the world. That means

something.” “There was never a doubt that Walding would do well in this course,” Owens said. “He is extremely motivated,

and that never dropped during the course.” “He never asked for special treatment; he did the same training as everyone

else, and scored well in all the exercises.” Walding’s no-quit attitude has taken him from Walter Reed Army Medical

Center in Washington back to Fort Bragg, N.C., where he’s become the first amputee to graduate from the Special Forces

Sniper Course. During his initial recovery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, Walding set up short-term

goals for himself. He was a runner before the incident, averaging 50 miles per week. During recovery, he would get up

and run a little more every day, always keeping his focus on that next step. Walding is using the same process to work his

way back to an operational role. As a soldier, his first step was to finish the sniper course; the next step is acting as an

instructor for his fellow soldiers. He said he’s hoping to work his way back to a place on an operational Special Forces

detachment. “I’m John Wayne, born on the Fourth of July. This is what I was meant to do.” Walding said.

Staff Sgt. John Wayne Walding October 27, 2009

By USASOC PAO

Page 10: Craft International

Staff Sgt. John Wayne Walding, ODA 3336, C Co., 3rd Bn., 3rd SFG. Silver Star recipient

BEING born on the fourth of July with a name like John Wayne, arguably few people could be called more American. But for this young Special

Forces communications sergeant, the price of freedom was realized April 6, 2008, when he lost the lower half of his right leg to sniper fire during an

operation in the Shok Valley of Afghanistan.

That day Walding, a native Texan, and his team ventured into territory previously untouched by coalition forces to capture several high-value targets.

The mountain village where the insurgents were hiding had been used to stockpile weapons since the time of the Russian invasion in the 1980s.

With no roads leading into the valley, Operational Detachment-Alpha 3336, along with their Afghan commando counterparts, flew in by helicopter.

Upon reaching the infiltration point, the team made a 10-foot jump out of the birds, as the pilots were unable to land. Many of them landed in a waist-

deep, icy river, and with the temperatures already around 30 degrees Fahrenheit, the climate began to take its toll. In order to reach their target, the

group made its way up a treacherous mountainside to the fortress-like village, which rested on a hill at about 10,000 feet.

All seemed quiet as they approached the compound. They knew the enemy was waiting for them, but were unable to tell where. When the lead

element came to within a few hundred meters of the compound, they began to receive heavy fire from all directions. What ensued was a six-and-a-

half-hour firefight, during which the team called in Air Force F-15s for danger-close air support 70 times. More than 150 insurgents were killed in the

fight. But but due to approaching weather, rising casualties for the team, and nearly 200 insurgents closing in on their position, they were forced to

withdraw.

Unfortunately, the approach route the team used to reach the village had been cut off. Stuck between a hail of gunfire and the edge of a cliff, their

only option was to go down the cliff face. With intense firing still coming upon them, the team quickly scaled the mountain using rocks and branches

growing out of the cliff. Every member of the team had sustained some form of injury, so the less injured helped the more critical casualties down the

sheer face. Walding, having been shot near the knee by a sniper, tied his nearly severed leg to his thigh and began his descent. In order to reach the

solid ground below, once he reached the bottom of the climb he, along with the others, had to make a 20-foot drop.

Walding and his teammates showed true bravery, bringing everyone off of the mountain despite the odds. Because of their teamwork and

camaraderie, the 10 members of ODA 3336 present that day all returned safely, and were each awarded the Silver Star, Dec. 12, 2008. "When you

become a Green Beret, you become part of a brotherhood that you get nowhere else," Walding said.

For more information on the Shok Valley battle, see the May 2009 issue of Soldiers.

Chris Scott Kyle An American Legend

After a decade in the military Kyle retired to spend more time with his family and joined other former SEALs to establish

Craft International, a security company with the motto "Despite what your momma told you, violence does solve

problems." He also helped found Fitco Cares, a foundation providing gyms and fitness equipment to keep soldiers active

and providing counselling and medical networks. Fitco Cares director Trevor Cox described Kyle as a modest man who

wanted to serve his country and help others, and who died "doing what filled his heart with passion – helping soldiers

struggling with the fight to overcome PTSD."

Here is a message from Chris on his Craft International website

Thank you for choosing Craft International to meet your training needs. As a military or law enforcement professional we understand

your time is valuable.

We are honoured to be able to share with you the lessons learned from our instructors, whom have walked in similar paths as

yourself, and some of whom continue to still do so today.

Through these lessons, experiences, in-depth studies, pain/sweat/tears, and in some cases blood, they have set forth a curriculum

rooted in solid fundamentals that have been time tested and proven under a variety of operational conditions.

Page 28: Craft International

Our goal with our courses is to do one thing; make you better by giving you the skills necessary to dominate your opponent and win.

It's never about what we have done and where we have been; only how well we can articulate it all to you. We strive to be true

teachers, and not merely instructors.

We are humbled to be a part of your continuing search and refinement of your chosen craft. Thank you for your continued service,

dedication, and associated sacrifices made in protecting this great nation, at home and abroad.

Respectfully

Private Military Contractors Under Suspicion At Boston Bombing

TOPICS:Activist PostBombMilitary

APRIL 18, 2013

Activist Post

Yesterday, Infowars.com posted images of what they referred to as Navy SEALs in civilian field gear lurking

at the finish line of the Boston Marathon where two bombs killed 3 and injured hundreds.

It turns out these men were Blackwater-like private military contractors from Craft International, according

to investigative journalist Anthony Gucciardi of StoryLeak.com.

The two mercenaries were wearing typical field gear of khaki tactical pants, combat boots, black coats, and

carrying suspicious backpacks. But what really gives them away as Craft International mercs is the hat with

the Punisher-like symbol on it.

Page 44: Craft International

Upper left is suspect at Boston bombing – Upper right is Craft hat for sale in their shop

Bottom is Craft founder and ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (deceased) in the same hat

Gucciardi writes:

There has been much discussion over the two individuals fitted with earpieces and military-esque gear spotted

at the Boston Marathon, but as it turns out they may likely be employees of the Blackwater-style private

military/security firm Craft International.

Craft International, modeled after Blackwater as an advanced private military training organization, was

founded by the late ex-Navy SEAL Sniper Chris Kyle.

Either these serious-looking fellows are big fans of military contractors and want to emulate them, or they’re the

real deal. In either case, they seem very suspicious to be at the scene of the crime clearly dressed in civilian

mission gear.

Page 47: Craft International

Chris Kyle in his Craft gear

The story behind the Craft Skull logo combines several meaningful pieces of Chris Kyle’s life and service to

this great nation but mainly honors his fallen teammates. As part of SEAL Team 3, Chris and his fellow

teammates painted similar skulls on their gear in order to strike fear in the enemy. The crosshair symbolizes his

time spent on a sniper rifle and is also in the form of a templar cross to symbolize his faith. Lastly, the crosshair

is on the right eye to honor SO2 Ryan Job USN (SEAL), who was critically wounded when he was shot in the

right eye while on deployment to Iraq in 2006.

Following the successful rescue mission by Navy SEALs of freighter Captain Richard Phillips on Easter

morning, 2009, Ryan Job was asked by a local reporter if he thought using Navy SEALs against Somali pirates

was overkill. His response was, “despite what your mamma told you, violence does solve problems.” Ryan Job

died in September of that year following complications during reconstructive surgery.

The Craft Skull is a daily reminder to us all the sacrifices brave warriors have made and what it takes to triumph

over evil.

Page 48: Craft International

Additionally, a third figure dressed identically is seen crossing the threshold of the finish line holding what

appears to be some kind of remote control.

Will someone in the media have the courage to ask the authorities if these clearly suspicious characters are

being considered as official suspects?
