    Abstract:

This analysis was carried out to predict the crack and hence failure for Disconnector/Earthing

Switch enclosure used in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS). All Enclosures in GIS are under high

pressure of Gas and during short circuit or other failures this pressure this may rise

exponentially, hence every GIS Enclosure is type tested thoroughly for very high factor of safety.

Any failure could be disaster both for switchgear and operator involved (considered fatal)

Normal way is to predict the von mises stress value below the Ultimate stress value of material

and considered to be safe. For this task we tried to predict the crack which may generate due to

higher pressure and tried to predict the failure resulting.

Assumptions involved the crack size and possibility due to nonvisible size to naked eyes during

mass production, nonlinear behaviour of aluminium alloy, shape of crack size, fracture toughness

value as available for nearest material.

Successfully able to predict areas where crack can occur and propagate.

The model is under manufacturing stage after detail design phase, by end of December it is

predicted to be tested in Germany. This is done in simple steps so could be implemented in
