The New Year is traditionally a time forchanges and Crab Line has made a significantone, welcome to the first issue of Crab Lineunder Poppyland Partnership management!Strictly this edition is both transitional andcollaborative as ownership passes from thefounder Philip Keddell to PoppylandPartnership. Philip established Crab LinePapers Ltd ten years ago and has developedthe Crab Line into the unique local paper it istoday. However, as you know from theannouncement he made in the pages of CrabLine in November last year, he had decided tomove on to fresh challenges and offered thepaper for sale.We are delighted to have acquired the CrabLine and are very clear that you enjoy theentertaining, interesting read it offers everyfortnight. We intend to continue providing asimilar mix of locally focussed opinion, information and entertainment. Inevitablywith a new editorial team and ownership itwill bring some changes to the Crab Line butnot the underlying nature of the paper. Tomisquote an old advert Poppyland Partnershipwill refresh the parts of Crab Line you can see!So who are Poppyland Partnership? We areone of the seven Local Area Partnerships(LAPs) across North Norfolk District, formedabout five years ago to enable residentsimprove life in their communities. All LAPshave developed wide local involvement andare working with town and parish councils, charities, voluntary groups, schools, clubs andsocieties throughout their area. The LAPs havebeen funded by grants amounting to a smallproportion of the funds generated fromsecond home council tax.Recent changes to North Norfolk DistrictCouncil policy and their plan to establish a BigSociety Fund, which will utilize second homescouncil tax funds, are due to take effect fromApril. The new arrangements free the LAPs topursue methods of self-funding, and some of

the constraints of top down governmentobjectives, to continue their work. Across theDistrict the self-funding initiatives will take avariety of forms and for Poppyland Partnershipan ideal opportunity was presented when CrabLine Papers became available at the end of lastyear. Why have we got involved in Crab Line? Wellthe strong community focus of Crab Line andthe broad community involvement ofPoppyland Partnership are, we feel, an idealcombination that will be beneficial to both andprovide a firm foundation for a successfulcommunity interest company, ploughing backprofits into assisting groups and communitiesachieve their aims and aspirations. To see whatelse Poppyland does, have a look at our websitewww.poppylandpartnership.co.uk or drop intoour office at Merchants Place on Church Streetin Cromer; this will also be the new Crab Lineoffice.Who will be running your Crab Line? Theeditorial and production team will consist ofMark Danson-Hatcher, Chairman of PoppylandPartnership, whose day job is in maritimepublishing; Paul Powell, Development andProduction for Poppyland and for this paperand Catherine Plewman, PoppylandCoordinator and Editor. Our loyal and valuedadvertising customers will already have metsome members of the team with Philip; over

I would like to wish the new incarnation ofCrabline the very best of luck.  I believe that itwill be able to serve the local community wellas it develops.  I am particulalry thrilled tolearn that it will have a woman editor, and Ibelieve that she will be sensitive to the needsof all her readers and bring fresh insight and

energy to the role.  This is is an important yearfor Cromer, celebrating, as it does, its 750anniversary, I look forward to reading aboutthe occasssion and the many other terrificcivic and community activities in the monthsahead from here and from our neighbours!Yours in supportGreg HaymanMayor of Cromer

Dear EditorThe Cromer and District Chamber of Trade andCommerce are pleased that a local enterprisehas become the new owners of The Crab Lineand would like to congratulate the new teamand wish them well in the business.Phillip, has been a bit of a ‘marmite’ editorover his years at the helm with some of hispictures, the mankini front page probablybeing the most memorable for all the wrongreasons, his letters and his editorial commentsbeing controversial from time to time. Butisn’t that why his readers picked it up and readit. The Chamber of Trade would like to wishPhillip well in his ‘retirement’ whatever hisplans may be over there in Mundesley. We would also like to wish PoppylandPartnership well in their running of the paperand offer our support to them. As acommunity interest group, PoppylandPartnership are well placed to continue withthis ‘Local Magazine’ we hope they havemany interesting articles, stories, pictures andissues to print over the coming weeks and thatthe loyal local businesses continue toadvertise with them. A local businesscombined with a local community partnership, whoose aims are to support the residents ofthe area, together should be a powerful, interesting and valuable asset to the town.Congratulations, to new owners of this Cromerbusiness and Chamber of Trade member welook forward to reading The Crab Line.Yours sincerelyTracey J KhalilSecretaryCromer and District Chamber of Trade andCommerce

Pearls of wisdomThe success of the Crab Line from day oneis that it has always been different than theso often boring free other papers, whoprint whatever is sent to them, word forword. It is all about relating to your readersmaking it interesting, challenging, questioning and fun as well as beinginformative to the community you areserving. With the price of paid-for papers the CrabLine is often the only paper some olderreaders have access to so there is acommunity spirit responsibility involvedwhich you will already be aware of, byrunning the Poppyland Partnership. I am inno doubt that you will continue to producea publication that is enjoyed by so manyand make the improvements that need tobe in place to refresh this paper. Whatpearls of wisdom can I offer you? I wouldsay that the customer is always veryimportant, they are the bosses and theypay the bills. The vast majority ofadvertisers with the paper have been therefor years and have become good friends.Look after them. It is nice to be liked byyour readers but it is more important to bequestioned by them regularly.Have fun and may I take this opportunity towish you all the very best with the CrabLine. North NorfolkYoung carersOn Saturday 3rd December North NorfolkRotary club organised a Dinner dance at theLinks Hotel, West Runton, in aid of NorthNorfolk Young Carers, via the Holt Youth

Project. Over 150 people attended andenjoyed a superb meal followed by Dancing toAgent Orange. There was an auction and raffleand in total £5,000 was raised.

As a direct result of the April Government cutbacks, The Holt Youth Project has been overwhelmed with referrals and desperatelyneeded funds to start up a much neededsecond group for primary school children agedbetween 7 – 11. North Norfolk Rotary club hasadopted this cause for the 2011 – 12fundraising and this additional group will now

be able to go ahead, organiser JulieAlford said she was delighted andunderstands the pressure on this charitywill only grow over the next 12 months!

In addition to the above, North NorfolkRotary Club are taking 21 young carersout for a Christmas dinner as a directresult from their recent fundraisinginitiative at Morrisons in Cromer.

MammothParade inCromer

On the first Thursday after the clocks wentforward, yet again, a small herd of Mammothswandered into Cromer, dazed and confused."It's all this constant switching to and fromBritish Summertime!" said their spokesmammoth, "We'd been asleep since the dawnof time but all this changing of the clocks justdisrupts things. A bunch of Neanderthalstried  the same thing  a long time ago andwhere are they now? The whole idea isprehistoric and belongs in the stone age, justas we do."The group halted at Cromer Museumto  trumpet "Helloooh!" to some old fossilfriends in the Geology section before headingon to the younger cliffs at Sidestrand. As theyreached the traffic lights they paused toadmire the brilliance of the modern display oflamps in the window of Randalls Electricalshop. One of the older males did not complete thejourney as his right knee was playing up. Heheaded back to the therapeutic mud of theriverbed at West Runton for a lie down andwas hoping to pick up a pack of hyenas on theway just for a laugh. It must be time for a change in the changingof time.

A True GentlemanI, like anyone who had the honour of knowingTrevor Opher would best describe thischarming fellow as a true Gentleman. I firstmet Trevor back in January 2005, after beingtold about the gentleman living almost acrossthe road from us in Cromer. Trevor, thenaged 82 years young was a Normandyveteran as well as being one of the firstsoldiers into Belsen. Trevor, when Iinterviewed him spoke of his first impressionsof this hellish place. The commandant of thiscamp Josef Kramer was there and behaving asif they had done nothing wrong. Trevor alsospoke of how close Britain was in the 1940s tobeing invaded by the German Army. After thewar Trevor moved to Leicester where heworked as a driver for the Leicestershire

Social Services. He married Maureen in1955. The couple, along with theirdaughter Dawn, after he retired moved toCanada Road, Cromer 22 years ago.Trevor has taken part on all the eventsinvolving the Royal British Legion sincemoving here. One would always noticethis delightful man by his marching in andout of town and that he was always verywell dressed and always smiling. I, like somany will miss this true gentleman.

Trevor leaves behind his wife of 56years Maureen, their daughterDawn, a grandson, agranddaughter and two greatgrandsons. Born 15th February1922 Died 16 December 2011 Thefuneral took place at St Faiths onJanuary 17th at 11am.

The Madness That IsMundesleyIs it magic or madness that drivesaround 75 people into the North Seaoff Mundesley, in aid of the Mundesleylifeboat. It is just one of those eventsthat draws out the good folk of thisvillage to either swim or encourageothers to get wet in the tropical watersthat are the North Sea. With prizesfor the best and not so best dressedswimmers for both adults and thechildren it is always quite a sight tobehold. Whatever it is it is good funfor all involved with refreshments onhand from the lifeboat supporters.

Kung HeiFat Choy!Kung Hei Fat Choy! (May you becomeprosperous) and Sun nien fai lok! (HappyNew Year) are just two traditionalCantonese greetings made at the time ofChinese New Year, also called the LunarNew Year, which this year fell on January

23rd and began 15 days of celebration tostart of the Year of the Dragon. PoppylandPartnership is delighted to have such anauspicious start to our ownership of CrabLine. Why? read on and also see how youmight have a better year ahead than youthought, but be careful:

2012 – Year of the DragonIn Chinese tradition, each year isdedicated to a specific animal. TheDragon, Horse, Monkey, Rat, Boar, Rabbit,Dog, Rooster, Ox, Tiger, Snake, and Ramare the twelve animals that are part of thistradition. In 2012, the Dragon iswelcomed back after the 2011 year of theRabbit. Each of these animals is thought tobestow their characteristics to the peopleborn in their year. The Year of the Rabbit was characterisedby calm and tranquillity, but the Year ofthe Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration andintensity. People respond to the spirit ofthe Dragon with energy, vitality andunbridled enthusiasm, often throwing allcaution to the wind – which can be anunwise move: the Dragon is all aboutdrama but if you take unnecessary risks, you may find yourself starring in your ownpersonal tragedy.

The Dragon PersonalityPeople born under the Dragon arepassionate, brave and self-assured. Attheir best they are pioneering spirits; attheir worst, they epitomize the old adage:Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.Dragons are generous with theirresources, a tendency that at its mostnegative can reflect a foolhardy attitudetowards money. But Dragons in generalare blessed with good fortune. They are

smart, enterprising and have a wickedsense of humour. They have a natural flairfor fashion and are the people to consult ifyou want to catch up on the latest trends.2012 is ushers in the Water Dragon. Waterexerts a calming influence on the Dragon’sinnate fire. Water Dragons are more opento other people’s opinions than otherDragons which gives them the ability tochannel their personal charisma into realleadership qualities. Some of the celebrities born in previousDragon Years include: John Lennon, RingoStarr, Al Pacino, Marlene Dietrich and MattDillon. The Dragon’s lucky colour is yellow.

The Dragon and Good FortuneDragon years are lucky for anyone thinkingof starting a business or initiating a newproject of any sort because money is easierto come by for everyone, whether it’searned, borrowed or received as a gift.Consequently we can expect the economicdownturn to ease up a bit in the comingyear. Fortunes can be made but they canalso be lost: Keep in mind like all goodthings, the Year of the Dragon will come toan end and you will be held accountablefor unreasonable extravagances.

We wish you every good fortunethroughout 2012 and the Year of theDragon.

Norfolk is no exception andhere in our part of Norfolk there is a richsource of legends to explore. We don’tclaim to have the authoritative versionbut welcome to first part of the Crab Lineguide to Norfolk Lore.

In honour of the previous owner/editorwe will begin at Mundesley. We also thinkit important to dispel any new legend thatwhat is about to be described might bePhilip following the sale of Crab Line.An apparition known as the LongCoastguardsman was reported in thenineteenth century walking the Norfolkcoast between Bacton and Mundesleyevery night just as the clock strikesmidnight. He is never seen on a moonlitnight. He revels in windy conditions, particularly when a storm rages, when hesings and shouts at the top of his voice.During the lulls of a storm he can beheard laughing loudly. At other times hiscries for help sound a long way off.

Who the Long Coastguardsman is nobodyknows but his behaviour is similar to thatof other spirits haunting the English coast, such as Hooper of Sennen Cove and JanTregeagle of Tregeagle’s Hole both on theCornish coast.

Have you seen or heard Norfolk’s LongCoastguardsman?

The GinnyLouise ArrivesIn NorfolkThe first of a possible fleet of up to10 state-of-the-art, purpose designedsupport vessels to transport personnelinvolved in the planning, development and construction ofoffshore wind farms in the GreaterWash and southern North Sea arrivedin Harwich on December 29th from its Spanishboat builder. Its owners, Tidal Transit, sailed her round thecoast and moored at Great Yarmouth onJanuary 2nd to provide an early opportunityfor potential customers and the media to lookover the vessel before she goes on to Wells-next-the-Sea and Grimsby for furthercustomer trials.Ginny Louise’s specification greatly exceedsthe current fleet being used for the samepurpose in the UK. The vessel’s MCA Cat 1coding and 10,000 litre fuel tanks give it arange of up to 150 miles offshore, well withinthe range of the UK’s forthcoming Round 3wind farms. She provides 4 crew members and twelvepassengers with comfortable beds, kitchen, bathroom, internet & entertainment facilities, enabling wind farm engineers to live and workon-site for up several days at a time. The vessel boasts rugged GRP constructionthat allows her to operate in rough seas – amajor advantage when working in the NorthSea. She is also fitted with twin V12 MANengines that allows her to achieve 27 knotswhen carrying 12 passengers & crew, and upto 6 tonnes of on-board cargo. Massivecargo decks fore and aft can accommodateup to 10,000kg of tools, equipment and

spares, and the Guerra crane on the aftdeck with a lifting capacity of 1,025kg at6.9m caters for long reach loading andunloading. The crane can also be deployed for camerasurveys and grab sampling. Leo Hambro, TidalTransit’s Commercial Director, is enthusiasticabout the vessel’s arrival, saying: “The arrivalof the Ginny Louise presents us with anexciting opportunity to introduce a verydifferent vessel to the UK’s offshore wind farmdevelopers and operators. When the nextvessel Eden Rose arrives early in 2012, we willundertake a tour of all the major east coastports to showcase the advantages of thesesensational vessels. With the UK constructingever larger offshore wind farms to help meetthe world’s need for clean energy, I believethat our vessels will quickly become thepreferred form of transport for wind farmcrews.”

Not SuitableAs HandLuggageDuring a lively debate at the Basle Airporten route to Gatwick to visit his mum inMundesley my stepson had to re-organisehis luggage. They, airport security, expressed major worries that he wascarrying in his hand luggage a couple ofplastic bags containing a Fondue cheesemixture, which they then agreed could bein their hand luggage. It was not until theyhanded out their Christmas gifts, did theyspot the fact that this razor sharp 17cmlong knife had been in their hand luggageall the time, which had been through oneof the airport scanning machines. It doesmake you wonder what else goes merrilyonto an aeroplane and how dangerousfondue is to your well being.
