UKECharisma

UKECharisma is an organization established with the support of United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysian Students (UKEC) in January 2011 to encourage students’ volunteerism by providing a reliable and sustainable framework for

community services and leadership projects to be carried out in Malaysia. The UKECharisma team consists of Malaysian students studying from highly regarded universities across the United Kingdom as well as Malaysia.

Projects begin with a recruitment phase where any university student studying in the United Kingdom, Ireland or Malaysia will be given the opportunity to apply to be a volunteer, or as called in UKECharisma, a Charisman. Then on, the Executive Committee selects volunteers based on the merits of their applications. Control of projects are handed over to project leaders alongside with their respective teams. Projects cover various aspects but particularly on education with an emphasis on the English language.

And the Charismen came marching in.

The idea of UKECharisma proved to be one worth pursuing. Over the past 5 years, UKECharisma has seen the execution of over 6 education projects all over Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Sabah. Through these projects, we witnessed commitment and passion from the participating members in their nation building efforts. Hopefully, along the way, we’ve changed some lives as well.

We anticipate 2016 to be our biggest year yet with an expanded Executive Committee and additional team members to be deployed under respective tasks, as we concentrate our efforts to continue inspiring youths of Malaysia in the spirit of volunteerism, servitude and cultivate a sense of care for our society.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR US

While there seems to be increasing awareness on Lung Cancer, AIDS and Breast Cancer in Malaysia, these diseases are only ranked 5th, 6th and 11th respectively as causes of death in Malaysia. Coronary Heart Disease is the number 1 killer in Malaysia, followed by stroke, signifying a strong need for cardiovascular health awareness. In 2010, the total number of deaths in Malaysia due to coronary heart disease was at 22,701 according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), contributing to about 22.18% of the total deaths in the country.

Heart attacks and myocardial infarctions can happen anytime, anywhere. The only way to increase chances of survival is through pre-hospital treatment. 39% to 47% of pre-hospital fatalities are preventable. The chain of survival includes early access to the emergency response system, early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to support circulation to the heart and brain, early defibrillation and early advance care by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and hospital personnel.

One of the factors that has a negative impact on its rate of success is the lack of basic skills and knowledge in performing bystander CPR among the Malaysian public before medical aid arrives.

MOTIVATIONSFor Tammy Tan, a chemical engineering student from University of Manchester, this realisation hit hard. A year ago, Tammy witnessed her beloved grandpa falling down and breaking his skull. Seeing the poor old man lying in a pool of blood, Tammy felt totally helpless. To watch someone she loves suffering in agony but to have no knowledge or skills to help led her to realize the importance of pre-hospital treatment, and subsequently, sparked an interest in Tammy’s mind to spread the awareness of CPR training to people around her.

Through the Inspire Initiative campaign, a platform provided by UKECharisma which allows students to voice out their ideas, Tammy and a group of Malaysian students studying abroad have decided to come together to transform the idea of educating the public about CPR into reality. The theme for this event is “Be Someone’s Hero”, and they aim to educate 1500 people the basic skills needed to manage an emergency life threatening situation until medical aid arrives. This can potentially help save a life or at least mitigate the effect of the untoward incident.

In line with our 59th National Day Celebration

We’re hoping to celebrate our 59th National Day in a different spirit. As we ponder upon and celebrate our growth as a nation together this far, made possible through our national heroes’ efforts, let’s aspire to be someone’s hero in return. Despite the differences that we may have, as is the nature of our unique diversity, keep the hearts of the nation beating.
