Your Park District is moving forward with efforts toward a sustainable future in providing the best parks, recreational facilities and programs. Staying within our current budget, our attention is focused on protecting our natural resources, making our facilities accessible for all abilities and meeting your park and recreational needs.

The District has retrofitted most Park District facilities with energy efficient lighting and is now researching the same for park lighting. A portion of these costs were paid for through Smart Energy Design and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The picnic pavilion at the new Sunset Ridge Park is powered by the sun and the Hessel Park tennis courts are manually controlled so that players push a button to turn on the lights when they want to play at dusk.

Additionally, rain gardens have been installed at Scott and Hallbeck Parks and approximately 20 acres of prairie is being established at the new Robert C. Porter Family Park as well as an another three acres of prairie at Heritage Park.

We look forward to the ground breaking for the new Leonhard Recreation Center this fall, which will provide much needed gym space, an indoor walking track and playground along with multipurpose activity rooms. Also coming in the next few weeks is the beginning of the largest restoration project yet on the Virginia Theatre, bringing us one step closer to completing this historical facility.

Meanwhile join us in some new family fun events featured in this brochure and designed to keep the whole family fit and active. Recreational programs offer the opportunity for all ages to participate, learn social skills, make new friends, get fit and learn a new skill or hobby. From Anime classes to Zumba, the Park District offers an exciting array of opportunities for you and your family. We hope you enjoy our parks, facilities, trails and programs.

Bobbie H. Herakovich Newton H. Dodds Executive Director Park Board President

The Champaign Park District is a special district of local government with its own financial and legal responsibilities. It is governed by five elected residents of Champaign who give their services to the community. The Park Board holds its regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Bresnan Meeting Center, 706 Kenwood Road. Residents are invited to attend and are welcome to make suggestions or comments to improve the programs or facilities offered. The Champaign Park District’s 58 parks total over 576 acres. Thirteen facilities are available for a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Merry & Bright Flashlight Candy Cane HuntAges 3-10‘Twas a night in December at our favorite farm house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. But then in the dark there arose such a clatter, we rushed to the farm to see what was the matter. And what to our wondering eyes did appear but great bunches of candy canes and hoof prints of reindeer!

Kids, we just found out that Santa hid candy canes all over his reindeer’s favorite Park District place – Prairie Farm! So bundle up, grab your flashlights, and come on out to the farm to help us find them! We even hear that some rare and special candy canes have been sighted on the farm – and you’ll get prizes if you find them! Plus you’ll get to meet Santa himself and you’ll stay warm with as much hot chocolate as you can drink!

HIRING SPORTS OFFICIALS

The philosophy behind the youth sports program is to provide an atmosphere that focuses on fun, opportunity, sportsmanship and instruction. Sports can play a positive role in our children’s development, fostering physical skills and emotional maturity.

Our children should have a place where they can have fun participating in organized activities in a healthy, safe environment. We strive to provide quality instruction in the fundamentals of the sport while emphasizing fun and sportsmanship over winning. By creating a positive experience for the children we hope to encourage a lifetime of involvement.

You can help. We need the cooperation and assistance of parents and coaches to promote and demonstrate these values.

Champaign Parks Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit

providing philanthropic support for the Champaign Park District.

On a sunny afternoon in early June, during a special board meeting held over the lunch hour, the Champaign Park District awarded the contract for Phase III of the Virginia Theatre restoration. At first glance this would not appear to be a big deal; another project, another low bid. But in fact this project is a VERY big deal, putting in motion the work that will almost completely finish the restoration of our beautiful icon in downtown Champaign.

Major components of this project include total restoration of the paint and plasterwork of the auditorium, including the proscenium (decorative arch over the stage), replacement of the seats, upgrades of the lighting and electrical and installation of an elevator from the main to the mezzanine levels. Other items will be addressed to bring the building up to code and compliance with ADA. Although an exact construction schedule has not yet been developed, it is estimated that substantial work will be done by March of 2013, just in time for Ebertfest in April.

Funding for the project is coming from a variety of sources including capital funds, donations and a $500,000 Public Museum grant from the state, but your help is still needed. With a new, restored look comes new opportunities and the board and staff of the Champaign Park District hope you are excited about this project as we are. The Virginia Theatre not only holds a significant place in the history of downtown Champaign, but in the hearts of the many residents and visitors who have had the benefit of seeing shows within her grand walls.

Please consider making a donation now to the Champaign Parks Foundation in support of the Virginia Theatre restoration and help bring us one step closer to completion!

Champaign Bark DistrictLocation: Southeast Corner of Windsor and Rising Road Hours: Open daily from dawn to dusk seven days per week year round

The Champaign Bark District is a 7-acre space for your dog to run off-leash and interact with other dogs and humans. This park features a 4 foot fence, double-gated entry area, separate areas for large and small dogs, parking lot, drinking fountains, and dog waste stations.

Bark District MembershipDog Park membership carries with it responsibilities to all Dog Park users and the public at large. Not all dogs are good candidates for Dog Park play and interaction with a wide cross section of dogs. If your dog is shy about meeting new people, children, or dogs, he might not be a good candidate for the Dog Park. In addition, Dog Park users must be able to maintain control over their dogs even when off leash. All dogs at the Dog Park should be responsive to their owners’ calls.

Purchase a one-year membership for your dog at the Bresnan Meeting Center, Springer Cul-tural Center, or Tennis Center. Users found without proper membership tags will be asked to leave and may forfeit future park privileges. Bark District memberships are reciprocal with Urbana Park District’s dog park, so your membership is valid at both dog parks.

The Dance Arts SchoolThe Dance Arts School teaches classes in Creative Movement, Irish Dance and Ballet. The ballet school is certified by the Royal Academy of Dance based in London, England, and is the only certified ballet train-ing school in the state of Illinois. We train our students using the internationally acclaimed Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, a worldwide ballet training program focused on teaching classical ballet techniques in a manner that is safe for our dancers’ growing bodies.

In 2003, Dance Arts added Irish Dance to its curriculum. Students are taught a warm up, proper Irish Dance tech-nique, and a cool down that is safe for each age and ability level.

Our FacultyThe ballet faculty members have each received professional training and collectively represent a wide spectrum of performance and educational backgrounds. Our Irish Dance instructors are championship-level dancers from the Sullivan School of Irish Dance, Mayer School of Irish Dance, and Trinity Academy of Irish Dance in Chicago. The ballet accompanists are professionally trained pianists with specialties in performance, theory, composition, and more. The expertise of both the instructors and accompanists greatly enhances the quality of the school.

Tree & Flower Programs

Growing TogetherThe Growing Together Tree is a program for parents or soon-to-be parents to adopt a tree that has been planted in a park during the year of your new child’s birth. Together they grow: child and tree. You will receive an infant t-shirt and a map with your tree’s location.

Adopt-A-TreeWe invite tree lovers to “Adopt-A-Tree” in their neigh-borhood park. A tree can be adopted by individuals, families, scout troops, church groups, or service organi-zations. Adoption can involve watering the tree, spreading mulch, or keeping an eye open for vandalism or disease. You will receive a map with your tree’s location.

Retirement TreePlant a living, growing retirement gift for the newly retired friend, relative, or co-worker to celebrate a successful career and a new phase of life. The retiree will receive a map with the tree’s location and a certificate. Call for current fee.

Memorial TreesA living memorial is planted in honor of a loved one. Call for current fee.

Flower IslandsThe Flower Island program is a cooperative beautification effort between local businesses and the Park District. This unique program allows businesses to have a personal flower bed near their site and to assist with the sponsorship of beds on public property (e.g. parks, schools, library, right-of-ways, etc.)

Each year the local business pays a fee to the Park District. Half this amount contributes to the cost of their bed(s) and the remainder is used for the Flower Islands on public property. Hence, they enhance the beauty of the community twice. Services included for the annual fee are design, bed preparation, planting, maintenance, and fall removal.

Enrollment: September – November Questions: Greg Sancken, 398-2591

Tree ProgramsChampaign Park District plants our program trees during the spring and fall. Spring tree examples include: Red Maple, River Birch, all Oaks, Canada Red Cherry, Red Bud. Fall examples include: Norway Maple, Sugar Maple, Hackberry, Locust. Call for current prices.

Deadline: Spring (February 1); Fall (August 15)Questions: Craig Kempher, 398-2591

The Adopt-A-Park program was developed by the Champaign Park District in 1982 after a class at Robeson Elementary School inquired about adopting the park near their school.

The purpose of the program is to encourage people in a park neighborhood to assume some responsibilities for their adopted park. This helps maintain and program the park above the level that the Champaign Park District is able to achieve on its own. Adopted parks build community support and often become the focal point of neighborhood activities. The park programs benefit both the Park District and the adopting group.

If you are interested in adopting a park or would like more information, please call 398-2550 or visit us at www.champaignparkdistrict.com.

How to Register Register in person at any Champaign Park District facility, by mail, or online at www.champaignparkdistrict.com. Champaign & Urbana Park District residents may begin registering immediately. Non-resident registration begins Monday, July 16, 2012.

Fees: Resident/Non-Resident (R/NR)Residents living within the boundaries of the park district regularly support park facilities and programs through property taxes. People living within the Champaign and Urbana Park District boundaries pay the “resident (R)” fee. Persons residing outside these districts will pay 50% more than the resident rates – “non-resident (NR)”. Fees charged for programs are used to offset part of the costs for special instructors, facility costs, and program supplies.

Dishonored ChecksA $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned by the bank for any reason.

Program Waiting ListsPrograms may fill. If this is the case, please ask to be placed on a waiting list.

Program ScholarshipsBecause some residents are unable to participate in recreation pro-grams due to economic hardship, the Champaign Park District offers scholarships to reduce certain fees and charges.

Scholarship applicants are not guaranteed fund availability, program registration, or choice of program location. Early applications are given priority. Scholarship application forms are available online or at the Bresnan Meeting Center and will be mailed to residents upon request. All requests will remain confidential. Need is the primary criterion upon which scholarship applicants are considered.

Child Care Resource Service (CCRS)CCRS helps income-eligible parents who are working and/or going to school to pay for their child care. Based on parents’ family size and income, working families whose incomes are at or below 50% of the state median income level may be eligible to apply. Processing can take up to 10 business days. Please pick up an application from CCRS.CCRS approved families may register for summer camps by paying a $10 deposit per child/per session of camp. These deposits may be refunded at the end of the summer once all CCRS checks are received and there is a credit balance. If money is still owed on your account once CCRS checks have been applied, you will be responsible for the rest of the bill. Because the Park District does not receive payment from CCRS until one month after the service was provided, your deposit could be refunded as late as October.

Questions: Child Care Resource Service, 333-3252 or 1-800-325-5516

Program Cancellations/RefundsDay Camps: A chance to cancel from an all-day camp without paying more than the required deposit will only be given through five (5) busi-ness days before the start of the session. After that, the full fee will be charged to the participant and the spot in the class will be opened to those on the waiting list.

Preschool Programs with Monthly Billing: Two weeks notice in writ-ing is required, or guardians are responsible for payment for the fol-lowing month. More information is given in the Preschool Handbook.

All Other Programs: Refunds will be given only through the second meeting of any program, unless otherwise noted above. There will be a $5 service charge due to participant cancellation (per participant/per occurrence) unless otherwise noted.

Exceptions: If the District cancels a program due to minimum registra-tion not being met, full refunds will be given. Pro-rated amounts will be refunded to participants if a class is cancelled by the District after it has begun. If a participant experiences a medical problem which prohibits program participation, the refund will be a prorated amount based on the number of sessions remaining in the program.
