Welcome to our new CPD programme for professionals in the sector of health, social care, early years and teaching and training.

We have developed a portfolio of activities which we hope may appeal to you. You can choose to study a longer qualification such as a 16 week specialist module or a one off workshop and/or seminar - it is entirely up to you.

All events and courses are certified by the Higher Education Centre, a validating body or a university.

Many of our activities carry university certification and these will be transferable if you wish to continue study with us or elsewhere in the future.

Wound Care and Pressure Ulcer Assessment and Management

Duration: 4 days over 3 months Day: Thursday (1st session 29th Sept. 2011)Certificate: Joint Lancashire Care NHS Cost: £300.00 Foundation Trust and the Higher Education Centre at accross College

An exciting new course for practitioners delivered in partnership with the Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust.

The aim of this course is to facilitate you to be able to undertake a comprehensive patient and wound assessment, including wound evaluation and management, pressure ulcer prevention and management.

The course consists of four sessions followed by practical experience where you are supported by a mentor and you will be expected to complete a competency workbook.

Health Care Assistants inPrimary and Community Care (Level 2)

Duration: 30 weeks Day: Friday Certificate: NCFE Cost: £550.00

This programme has been designed to support learning and development opportunities for staff working as Health Care Assistants or Health Care Support Workers in a Primary and Community Care Environments. It has been designed to allow participants to develop the underpinning knowledge of theoretical and practical skills and competencies necessary to support the work of the qualified staff within their particular team.

Preparing for the Mentoring Role (Level 3) Duration: 10 weeks Day: 1 full day attendanceCertificate: EdExcel Cost: £40.00

This unit focuses on developing an understanding of the roles, boundaries and responsibilities required of the mentor engaging in the mentor role. It explores the need to establish individual mentoring needs and the key techniques in maintaining

an effective mentoring relationship, establishing the means to review mentee progress as well as your own practice. The unit also highlights the importance of using appropriate opportunities to review progress through appropriate feedback, using target setting and action planning in a way that helps towards achieving their goals.

There is the opportunity to reflect on own practice and identify opportunities to develop skills with the aid of feedback from mentees, peers and other appropriate sources, and to use this understanding to inform practice.

Preparing to Teach in theLifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Award (Level 4)

Duration: 12 weeks Day: MondayCertificate: Ascentis Cost: £195.00

The PTLLS Award is essentially a survival guide to teaching and training in Further and Adult Education and consists of a minimum of 48 hours study and practice. It is wholly introductory and aims to give the untrained practitioner an understanding of the essential elements of teaching/training in a variety of educational settings, for example, colleges, community centres, workplace/industry and hospitals, indeed any settings in what is now termed the ‘Lifelong Learning Sector’. The course helps to promote a feeling for the challenges, responsibilities and satisfactions of teaching and for this reason acts as the basic unit of teaching competence embodied in the other teaching qualifications that can be progressed to.

Care Assessment and Planning (Alcohol and Substance Misuse Work) (Level 4)

Duration: 16 weeks Day: TuesdayCertificate: Liverpool John Moores University Cost: £320.00

There are a number of identified stages that occur in treating people with alcohol and substance problems; these include screening, assessment, care planning and aftercare. This module will guide participants through the treatment process as a multi-agency approach, referring to key documents and recommendations as set out by the National Treatment Agency. Learners will be required to consider the nature and relevance of each stage of the ‘treatment journey’ and its relevance in supporting identified needs of the service user. The module will offer the opportunity for the reflection of professional practice and candidates will be encouraged to critically evaluate current relevant research and its implication for choice of method in achieving optimal outcomes for the service user.

The Developing Child (Level 4)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: MondayCertificate: Bolton University Cost: £300.00

This module examines the way in which children develop, focusing on physical, intellectual/cognitive, language, emotional and social aspects of development whilst considering a holistic approach. It also explores factors affecting development including the influence of parents/primary carers, levels of support and nurture, the role of play and interaction with others and the environment. Participants will be required to demonstrate their skills of applying child development theory to practice, by reflecting on observations of children within their work setting.

Safeguarding Children (Level 5)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: TuesdayCertificate: Bolton University Cost: £300.00

This course is for any professional whose role involves working with children and which may include dealing with child abuse issues. You will develop an informed and up to date understanding of safeguarding children issues and all associated practices and procedures, build a core knowledge of key information and skills that contribute to safeguarding children processes, and learn about the importance of initiating and maintaining effective working relationships/partnerships with parents, carers and the relevance of multi-agency working. You will learn about different types of abuse, the range of signs and symptoms and the short and long-term effects of this abuse on the child. You will consider the differing perspectives of abuse, such as medical and psychological, and their implications for the vulnerability of children. You will also study the context of working with child abuse such as relevant legislation and policies, procedures, inter-agency working practices, methods of assessment and investigation and the skills for effective child protection planning.

Cultural Diversity within the Community (Level 5)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: FridayCertificate: Bolton University Cost: £300.00

This module considers the heterogeneous structure of community life in Britain and the changing nature of ethnicity, including debates about identities. It explores the complexities of race and racism and examines the process of discrimination, both individual and institutional, as well as exploring how the needs of specific ethnic minority users of health and social care services are being addressed.

Health and Illness in Society (Level 5)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: FridayCertificate: Bolton University Cost: £300.00

This course is for professionals working in the health sector and provides a broader understanding of the social issues that have an impact on health. You will examine some of the key sociological themes such as class, gender and ethnicity, the related economic factors, and the impact of these on health inequalities. It is expected that you will consider these factors in the context of your professional practice. You will be required to interpret, analyse and evaluate information from a range of sources relevant to the subject area.

Alcohol Substance Use and Mental Health (Level 5)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: WednesdayCertificate: Higher Education Centre Cost: £300.00 at accross College

In this module students will have an opportunity to explore the complex relationship between alcohol, substance use/misuse and mental health/illness. A bio-psychosocial approach to the study will encourage the integration of differing concepts relating to co-morbidity of alcohol and substance misuse and mental illness, as students gain an understanding of the level of impact on individuals, families and communities. Consideration will be given to the level of knowledge and competence required within the workplace to ensure effective service delivery, as students develop an overall insight into service provision and the strategies currently used to address the demand. Strategies and intervention from within a mental health promotional framework will be outlined and current service provision evaluated.

Mental Health Care, Perspectives and Practice (Level 5)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: FridayCertificate: Bolton University Cost: £300.00

To examine the development of the field of mental health care historically, politically and legally. To explore the theoretical perspectives which underpin the development of corresponding treatments and interventions, which address these problems. To develop the student’s understanding of the role of the key players in mental health teams and the collaborative nature of that role when working with clients.

Quality Assurance Systems in Education and Training (Level 5)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: MondayCertificate: University of Huddersfield Cost: £300.00

The module examines and evaluates the ideology, conceptual basis, key features and potential impacts of commonly used quality systems in education and training. It explores the interaction between key processes and measures such as performance indicators, internal audits and findings-led inspection. It critically evaluates the

impacts of quality processes and the way in which notions of professionalism are re-worked in local settings.

Mentoring and Coaching inLearning and Organisational Contexts (Level 5)

Duration: 10 weeks Day: MondayCertificate: University of Huddersfield Cost: £300.00

Students will examine a range of approaches to mentoring and coaching. Current ideological, political and sociological aspects of mentoring and coaching will be reviewed. Consideration will be given to organisational context and culture and the purpose and role of mentoring and coaching within different settings. Students will analyse infrastructures to support mentoring and coaching. Students will explore the relationship of mentoring and coaching to other professional roles such as counselling, considering the ethical and potential power implications of mentoring and coaching relationships.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Level 6)

Duration: 32 weeks Day: ThursdayCertificate: Qualifi Cost: £2,500.00

This course is designed for experienced / qualified therapists or counsellors of any modality that want to add Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) qualification to their work. However, as there is a considerable amount of therapy skills included specifically for CBT it is also available as a standing start qualification for entry to psychotherapy as a profession. Admission on to the course is on the basis of suitable prior education and work experience and is a suitable addition to a variety of professions such as youth workers, hospice staff, nurses or social workers.

The course is accredited at QCF Level 6 by Qualifi Ltd. a national awarding body regulated by Ofqual and accredited by The National Council for Psychotherapists. It

is also mapped into the minimum training standards of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP) to enable graduates of this Diploma to apply for and work towards accreditation with BABCP.

Sector: Early Years

A series of one hour workshops for Early Years Professionals/Practitioners providing an insight to;

Session 1: Brain Development - A look into how the brain works on a basic level to ensure the terrible 2’s are an interesting part of growing up, or why behaviour is sometimes uncontrollable by young children.

Session 2: Schema Play - Insight into the basic layouts of schema play and a chance to share ideas to support schema in learning development.

Session 3: Communication Friendly Spaces - Ideas to develop better quality interactions for children using simple and inexpensive materials.

Session 4: Behaviour Management - Ideas I bet you all knew but didn’t give it time to work.

All of the above are delivered by a qualified Early Years Practitioner.
