Welcome Welcome to Central Piedmont Community College’s Student Guide. Please consider this booklet your one-stop shop for learning more about the College’s many resources, deadlines and programs, including important information on enrollment, student services, schedules, important dates, registration information and more. To help the College further demonstrate its commitment to environmental sustainability, we’ve created a new student guide design that is thinner and lighter. That’s because we’ve moved our course schedules online. Up-to-date class listings may be found at http://schedule.cpcc.edu. There, you will find a complete listing of CPCC’s available courses, including class meeting times, location, course prefix and instructor information. And, to help you find information more easily, we have included the division/program contact information to assist you if a granted petition is required or you need information about a specific course in that particular division/program area. Summer Hours of OperationAs we continue to restrict spending wherever possible, CPCC will operate on a four-day, 40-hour work week again this summer. From Monday, May 17, 2010 through Sunday, July 18, 2010, the College’s hours of operation will be 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. from the College such as online registration, e-mail and online courses. To create your CPCC Login, log on to the website at http://cpcclogin.cpcc.edu. You can also get your Student ID number from the CPCC Login ap-plication if you do not know it.

3. Register for classes online at http://mycollege.cpcc.edu or in person at any of the convenient campus locations.

Use your CPCC Login account to check your residence classification. This classification determines tuition charges and is based initially on information provided on your application. Placement TestsPrepare for the placement tests• For more accurate placement into English and math courses, students

should take the placement tests only when feeling well rested, and after a thorough review of the ACCUPLACER study guides. You can find descriptive information about the placements tests, score requirements, and take practice tests at www.cpcc.edu/testing_assessment.

• Placement testing is administered at each campus location. Please visit www.cpcc.edu/testing_assessment/placement-testing for testing hours and contact information.

• Appointments are not required at the Central Campus, but be sure to check the Testing Center website for recent schedule changes.

• Remember, CPCC wants you to be successful!

Residency RequirementsNew students or students whose residence status has changed may be eligible for in-state tuition status if they have established and maintained a legal residence in North Carolina for at least 12 consecutive months prior to start of the term. A North Carolina driver’s license, voter registration card, North Carolina tax return and other proof, such as a lease or deed, may be reviewed in various combinations as documentation, but no one item or combination will necessarily be the deciding factor. Responsibility for proving status lies with the student.Non-U.S. citizens should bring a resident alien card, visa or I-94 in addition to the above types of proofs. The immigration document and date of issue are factors in determining residence status for tuition purposes. Use your CPCC Login account to view your current residence classification. If you think your classification is not correct, contact Admissions and Registration Services at any CPCC campus for a review of your status. The fee along with the original amount of the check or credit card charge is due within five (5) business days after official notification from the College. These amounts are payable only by cash or money order at any campus cashier’s office. A HOLD is placed on all student records until acceptable payment is received. If payment is not received by the due date, your registration for the class or classes is canceled.

Course Load RegulationStudents registered for at least 12 hours of credit during fall and spring terms and for at least nine hours of credit during summer term are considered full-time students. Any hours over 18 during fall and spring terms and any hours over 13 during summer term are overload hours and require permission. All students seeking overload approval for 19-20 hours during fall and spring terms and for 14-15 hours during summer term must secure approval from the faculty advisor, program chair, division director or appropriate instructional dean. All students seeking overload approval for 21 or more hours during fall and spring terms and for 16 or more hours during summer term must secure approval from the appropriate instructional dean.Note: Financial aid students (per federal regulations) need to register for at least 12 hours of credit to be considered full-time for the summer term. Veterans Affairs students (per federal regulations) need to register for at least six hours of credit to be considered full-time for the summer term.

High School Students For information about the Concurrent Enrollment or College Experience programs, call 704.330.6417 or visit www.cpcc.edu/hsprograms. You must be at least 16 years old to register.• Concurrent enrolled high school students begin in-person registration Jan. 6.

Academic Advising & Counseling• Whether you’re new to CPCC or a student returning after an extended

absence, visit the Office of Counseling and Advisement on the Central Campus (Central High Building, Room 212) or at any of the five area campuses to find out more about programs of study and course requirements. Returning students can also obtain program requirements from their faculty advisors; returning students who plan to transfer to a four-year school are encouraged to visit the Transfer Resource Center (see page 7). Students can also learn about program requirements in the CPCC catalog, which can be purchased at all bookstores, cashiering offices or viewed online for free.

• Students who want to change their program of study can meet with a counselor or advisor, or visit the academic department for their program of interest to complete this process. Veterans Affairs students need to contact the VA Office before changing programs.

• Students with no previous college English or math course credit who are required to take college-level English or math courses will need to take the ACCUPLACER placement tests. (This may be required as a prerequisite for some course other than English or math.) For more information, including how to prepare for the placement tests, visit: www.cpcc.edu/testing_assessment. After testing, have your placement test scores interpreted by an academic advisor or a counselor and select your English or math courses.

• Students with previous college work are advised to submit official transcripts from prior institutions to Student Records and complete a Transcript Evaluation Request form. While students await the results of this official transfer credit evaluation, counselors and advisors can use unofficial copies of transcripts to make course recommendations. Veterans Affairs students are required to submit all prior college and military transcripts.

• Also, talk with a counselor if you have concerns about possible barriers to successfully completing your classes this semester. Personal counseling services are also available to you at CPCC.

Standards of Academic ProgressCPCC requires that students make academic progress in order to remain in good standing and continue their enrollment. CPCC has established and will apply the standards of academic progress to all students with a declared program of study pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate. Students bear responsibility for their own academic progress and for seeking assistance when experiencing academic difficulty. Satisfactory Academic Progress requires that students must maintain a term GPA at or above 2.0. For more information visit www.cpcc.edu/ican/sap. Note: All financial aid recipients are required to meet satisfactory academic guidelines established by CPCC and the financial aid standards of progress, pursuant to Federal Regulations.Students on academic probation or suspension are not eligible to register during priority registration. Transfer Resource CenterThe Transfer Resource Center (Central High Building, Room 100) assists students who are transferring from CPCC to four-year colleges and universities. Continuing and returning CPCC students meet with transfer advisors on a drop-in basis to discuss transfer programs, transfer requirements, prerequisites and course selection. Students can also learn about transfer programs in the CPCC catalog, which can be purchased at all bookstores, cashiering offices or viewed online for free. Contact the Transfer Resource Center at 704.330.6454 for additional information.

Disability ServicesStudents with disabilities who are interested in making arrangements for classroom accommodations and other related services must meet with a disability counselor. Students must self-identify and provide appropriate disability documentation to be eligible for services. Career ServicesCareer Services assists curriculum students with career decisions and facilitates the search for employment opportunities by providing them with exclusive, online job listings. Individual appointments can be scheduled with a career counselor at any campus for personalized attention to address each student’s career or job concerns. When students need help polishing their résumé or interview skills, Career Services can help. Computers are available for creating résumés, taking career assessments or gathering information on specific careers. Financial AidFinancial aid students must be awarded and have a Financial Aid Authorization Form on file in the Financial Aid/VA Office before financial aid will be posted to their accounts. Students will need to pay any tuition, fees and bookstore charges not covered by financial aid. If a financial aid student is placed on suspension after grades post, he/she is responsible for paying all tuition, fees and bookstore charges. Note: Check with Financial Aid to be sure there is enough time for Financial Aid processing before your tuition payment is due. You may need to be prepared to pay for your classes and, if eligible, receive your award later.Students who wish to apply for financial aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year at www.fafsa.gov. (Don’t forget our school code: 002915.) Help filling out your FAFSA is built into the system, so you’ll receive assistance as you go along. Veterans AffairsCPCC is approved by the North Carolina State Approving Agency for the enrollment of persons eligible for education assistance benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Program helps increase the retention rates and provides inspiration and motivation to CPCC’s minority male students. 3MP provides comprehensive activities that promote the personal development, academic improvement and other social and educational advancement among minority males at CPCC. Parking DecalAfter your tuition and Campus Access, Parking and Security (CAPS) fees are paid, you can obtain a parking decal from the Cashier’s Office or the Security Office at any campus (except Central Campus). Central Campus parking decals can be obtained at the Cashier’s Office in Central High.

Student ID• New Students - Obtain your student ID card. Student IDs are required for

many of the services at the College including the library, Academic Learning Center, fitness centers and Testing Center. Student IDs are made in the Central High Building on Central Campus and at all other CPCC campuses.

• Returning Students - Keep your ID and have a validation sticker applied each term after paying. (There is a charge for replacement IDs.) Students can obtain validation stickers at cashiering and registration offices on all campuses.

Financial ResponsibilityWhen you register for classes at CPCC, you become financially obligated. It is your responsibility to pay all charges on your account by the due date. If your financial aid, scholarship or payment from an external source becomes unavailable or is insufficient, you must pay the balance immediately upon notification. It is your responsibility to ensure that your tuition and fees are paid in full.

WithdrawalWhen a student determines that he/she will be unable to complete courses in which he/she is currently enrolled, it is the student’s responsibility to initiate procedures leading to a formal withdrawal (“W”) in order to avoid a failing (“F”) grade.A student who for any reason cannot complete a course, must take the responsibility to formally withdraw in order to avoid a failing grade. To receive a “W” grade, a student must withdraw prior to the 35 percent date of the class. Financial aid and Veterans Affairs students are required to notify the Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Office if they intend to withdraw from a class.

RefundsThe refund policy is established by the North Carolina Community College System and is subject to change without notice. CPCC will apply this policy without exception. 16-Week Curriculum Classes• 100 percent of paid tuition is refunded if you officially withdraw from

classes prior to the first day of the academic semester. • 75 percent of paid tuition is refunded by the College if you officially

withdraw from a class on or before the 10 percent point of the class.• Check with your instructor for the exact date.Occupational Extension Classes Continuing Education Occupational Extension classes are non-credit classes. College-level grade point values and credit hours are not awarded for Occupational Extension classes. Continuing Education Occupational Extension classes are indicated by OE after the course description under the “refund” column.• 100 percent of paid tuition is refunded if you officially withdraw from the

class prior to the first day of the class. • 75 percent of paid tuition is refunded if you officially withdraw from the

class on or before the 10 percent point of the class. The 10 percent point varies from class to class. Fees and other charges are not refunded.

Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Students Financial aid and Veterans Affairs students are required to notify the Financial Aid/Veterans Affairs office if they intend to withraw from a class. In addition, financial aid students may be required to repay the U.S. Department of Education their tuition/fees and/or bookstore charges. If a Veterans Affairs student withdraws from a course, they must notify CPCC’s VA Office immediately to prevent any overpayments. The VA Office is required to report all changes of enrollment within a strict timeframe to the Department of Veterans Affairs to prevent liabilities to the student and/or college. The last date of attendance must be verified for all Financial Aid/VA students. HigherOne Debit Card CPCC has partnered with HigherOne to provide curriculum and financial aid students with a more efficient, easier way to receive their refunds. Do I have to wait until the end of the semester before I can visit my counselor or faculty advisor?No. It is a good idea to plan ahead for the upcoming semester early to ensure that you are on the right track! You can visit an academic counselor or faculty advisor at any time during the semester.

Q. How do I know who my Faculty Advisor is? From the CPCC homepage, log into MyCollege using your CPCC Login and password. Select Students from the left navigation. From the Academic Profile menu, select “My Profile.” Your advisor’s name and email address will appear near the end of your profile.

Q. What if my financial aid has not been awarded yet and my tuition is due? Talk with your Financial Aid Counselor. If your file is waiting on

corrections, your course(s) may be held. Otherwise, please be prepared to pay for your tuition and books.

Q. Do I need to take a placement test(s)? There are many factors that determine whether or not a placement test(s)

is required. Do you plan to take any courses with an English or math prerequisite? Are you transferring in courses completed at a different school? Have you taken the ACT or SAT? Does the program you are trying to get into require a placement test score? It is best to speak with an advisor or counselor to determine if a placement test(s) is required.

Do I have to wait until the official evaluation of my transfer credit is complete before I register for classes?You do not have to wait until your transfer credit has been evaluated to register for classes. Counselors and advisors can do a preliminary review of your prior transcript and recommend courses for your first semester at CPCC.

ACA 111 - If you’re new or returning to college, this class will help you get on your feet. ACA 120 - What kind of career suits your personality? Goal setting, career exploration, resume writing and interviewing techniques make this class a must for serious students seeking serious careers. This class is only eight weeks in length, and provide one credit hour.

ACA 118 - Note-taking, test-taking, memory, critical thinking - find out what it takes to be a successful student in college - and in life. This is a full semester class, and offers two credit hours.

Fire/Smoke• Activate nearest fire alarm• Immediately evacuate the building using the quickest exit.• Do not use elevators.• Take personal belongings with you (keys, purse, coat, etc.) and close the door

behind you.• Do not attempt to use fire extinguishers unless properly trained.• Assist persons with disabilities.• Call Security at 704.330.6911 from a safe location.

Bomb Threat or Suspicious Package• If you receive a bomb threat on a campus phone, hang up and immediately dial

9*57 to flag the call.• If a telephone number is displayed, record the number.• Call Security at 704.330.6911 from a landline phone.• Proceed as instructed by emergency personnel.• Do not use cellular phones, two way radios or other electronic devices.• Do not handle suspicious package or other items.

Hazardous Materials• Evacuate the area immediately.• Call Security at 704.330.6911 and Health and Safety at 704.330.5492.

Tornado/Hurricane• Shelter in place away from windows and doors.• Move to interior room on lowest level of the building.• Call Security at 704.330.6911.
