Ganga-The River

The Ganga dses in the snowbound heights of the lIilllalClyas. nc,lrly 4000 mctl-Cs Ibove sea level) fi'om a dark. iCy cavern shaped like the mouth of a cow (known as Caul11l1kh). This glacier which maintains the elcl"Ilai no\\" of the Ganga has a backdrop of til(' three Bhaginuhi peaks.

From this gllc:icr. huge chunks of ice break down to fall inlO the rushing: waters of the Bhagirathi.

At Devaprayag. the Hhagil-athi is jOined by the Alakananda (which o!'iginates above Badrinath near the Intlo:rih('[ borele!' and receives the watc,'s of i\1'.IIldakini al Rudraprayag1 to fOl'm the great Gilnga dver,

From a swill moving !'tn'alll thl' Canga grows into a wide dver jusl helolT it iOllches the plains at Rishikesh, Then begins its over 2000 km-Iong: journey through the heart of India-the Indo-Gangetic plain-before it bUs into thl' Bl.v of Bengal.

Under the Ganga Action Plan. the pumping station al JajmBu is being renovated and its capacity expanded. Improvements to the sewage farm have been taken up. A mjor 130 MLD treatment plant is to be built. An i ntegrated sanitation scheme for Jajmau tanncl'Y area to treat the tannery wastes and improve drainage and garbage disposal has been initiated. A phased programme for tapping waste waters from the naJJahs and the cleaning/renovation of sewers has commenced.

Allahabad

Allahabad or Prayag is where the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati converge into one. Domestic waste rather than industrial effiuel1l is the problems here. Under the Ganga Action Plan, a time-bound action programme has been drawn up keeping in view that the Kumbh Mela will be taking place here in early 1989. The Gaughat pumping station is being renovated. A sewage treatment plant at Naini is being constl·ucted. Extensive renovation of the sewer network has also commenced.

For the first time in recent years, a determined, multi-sectoral 31?proach has been initiated to improve conditions in this historical city.

Patna

Emerging from another great and ancient city, Pataliputra, Patna today is the capital of Bihar with a population close to a million. The main source of pollution is the city's sewage. About 50 million litres per day flows into the river. One of the largest sewage treatment plants was built at Saidpur.Patna. But it became defunct more then 10 years ago. Under the Ganga Action Plan, its renovation was given high priority. The plant was recommissioned in June, 1986. Another plant at Beur has been

Public Involveluent in the Ganga Action Plan

While launching the Ganga Action Plan ,:II Varana:si on the Hlh June. 1986 oUl' Prime' lillistcl' has staled very deady. " The Ganga ACI ion Plan is not JUS! a Government plan. It has nOI been prepar'cd for Ih(' P"VD or government officials alone. II is a plan for all the people of India; one i n which they can come forward and part icipate, It is upto LIS to dean the whole of the Ganga and J'efl'ain fmm pollution ii" ,

In the first and the last analysis Ganga will remain clean only if the people want it so and help in the pmcess, There aloe many ways in which this can be donc,

'VVe must knmv what are the pl'Oblems of river pollution, what arc its sources and why pollution should concern us, \Ve must know how pollution affects the lise of the l'ive1' water, how it can affect our health. how it damages fish and olhel' aquatic life,
