Systematic Diagnosis of Factors Leading to CyclicShearCreepofAirportAsphaltSurfacesTworunwaysatthesameAustralianairportwereresurfacedwith50-60mmofasphaltbetweenSeptember2010andJuly2011.TheMarshall-designed14mmnominalsizedasphaltwastypicalofairport-qualityasphaltinAustralia.Apremiumacidmodifiedbinder,locallyknownasM1000,wasused.Approximatelysixmonthsafterconstruction,horizontalshearcreepdeformationswereobserved.Thefailureswereonlyobservedinthebrakingzoneassociatedwithonelandingdirectionandonlyonthesecondofthetworesurfacedrunways.Around60isolatedfailurespresentedovertwotothreeyears,afterwhich,newfailuresceasedtoappear.
Ataroundthetransitionfromonerunwaytothesecond,thefineaggregate(dust)sourcehadchangedfromonequarrytoanother.TheseconddustcontainedpredominantlyHisingeriteclayminerals.Hisingeriteisa rarely encounteredmember of theSmectite-groupof clays andpossesses physical properties indicativeof potentially adverse effect on asphalt stability and shear stress resistance. The original dust containedNontronite,amorecommonandlessconcerningmemberoftheSmectite-group.Subsequentinvestigationdeterminedthatthebitumen(M1000)feedstock(crudeoilsourceblend)alsochangedataroundthetransitionbetweenthetworunways.Retainedbitumensamplesfrombeforeandafterthefeedstockchangeindicatedsignificantly different bitumen properties. It followed that the two runways contained two substantiallydifferentmastics, within an otherwise common coarse aggregate skeleton. The aim of this investigationwastodeterminethesingle, orcombination, ofasphaltconstituentsthatledtothesignificantdifferenceinrunwaysurfaceresponse tohighshearstressconditions. Themastic(bitumenfeedstockanddustsource)wasconcentratedon.However,significanteffortwasalsomadetoexcludeotherpotentiallycontributingandconfoundingfactors.
The initial phases of the systematicinvestigation confirmed the change inmastic was responsible for the observeddifference in surface performance. First,aircraft-inducedsurfacelayershearstresseswerecalculatedforthethreeregularlyusedlandingdirectionsacrossthetworunways.As a result, differential aircraft operationwasexcludedasacontributingfactor.Thefigure to the right shows the phases ofinvestigationleadingtoachangeinbitumenpropertiesasarootcauseofdistress.

Second,surfacelayerinterfaceshearresistancewasmeasuredbydirectshearandcyclicsheartestingofcoresrecoveredfromthetworunwaysurfaces.Thedirectsheartestingexcludeddifferentialinterfaceconstructionasapotentiallycontributingfactor.Thedirectshearandcyclicsheartestresultswerecombinedtodemonstratethattheasphaltonthefirstrunwayhadsignificantlyhigherresistancetocyclicshearstressthanthesecondrunway’sasphalt.Thisfocusedtheinvestigationtowardsthetwoasphaltmaterialsandtheirconstituents.Third, a range of non-specification testing was performed on the various retained and representativeconstituentmaterials. Itwasconcludedthatthehigherstresssensitivityandlowershearstressresistance associatedwith the bitumen used on the second runwayresultedinanasphaltsurfacewithreducedresistancetocyclicshearcreep. Isolatedzonesofpermanenthorizontaldeformationresultedunder the high shear stresses associated with typical commercialaircraft braking. The observed self-correction of the surface wasconsistent withmeasured in-storage hardening of retained bitumensamples.Thelackofresistancetoshearcreepofthesecondrunwaysurface was determined to be an example of medium-term asphalt

RecyclingConcreteAggregate(RCA)andReclaimedAsphaltPavement (RAP)areconstructionmaterialsproduced from existing structures which havereachedtheendoftheirservicelives.RCAistypicallyproduced by crushing concrete which has beenbrokenupwhileRAPistypicallyproducedbycold-millingasphaltpavement.RAPisfrequentlyrecycledintonewpavementstructure,oftenbeingreplacedonthesameroadwaysfromwhichitwasmilled.RCAismoreoftenusedasareplacementforvirginmaterialingranularfillapplications,buthasbeenfoundtobeusableinnewconcreteapplicationsaswell.
RCA generally has a high content of fine materialdue to the crushing operation. This finematerial isgenerallymadeupofthefineaggregateandcementmortarof theoriginal concretematerial. When it isincluded in new concrete, the fine RCA materialsgreatlyincreasethewaterdemandandcanreducethematerial’sworkabilityandcompressivestrength.Forthese reasons, this fine fraction is often reduced orremovedpriortoincludingRCA.
Unshrinkablefill(u-fill)isaconcretemixturewhichis characterized by its highly flowable nature andits low compressive strength. In order to achievethesecharacteristics,itisdesignedwithahighwatercontentandlowcementcontent.U-fullisoftenusedtofillaroundburiedutilitylinesasitcanflowbeneaththelinesandbeeasilyexcavatedwhenthelinesneedtobereachedinthefuture.
Because of u-fill’s low requirement for strengthand already high water content, it could representanpotentialapplicationwhereintheuseofrecycledmaterialsisnotdetrimental.
The City ofToronto is interested in determining ifrecycled materials can be effectively used in u-fillapplications. Specifically, they are interested in
recycled materials which include the fine fraction, unlike some previous applications. If this materialisusable inu-fill, thenasignificantprocessingstepcan be removedmaking recycledmaterials amoreattractive alternative tovirginmaterials.Dependingon the results of the study, they may modify theirmunicipal construction specifications to allow forrecycledmaterial’s inclusion in u-fill.TheCity puttogether a research team including the Centre forPavementandTransportationTechnology, consultantsfromLVM,andtheMillerGrouptoinvestigatethisquestion.
Theresearchprogramhasincludedseveraliterationsincludingtwofieldtrialsandseverallaboratorytrials.CPATThasundertaken these lab trials investigatingthe effect of recycled materials on workability, compressive strength, bleed water amount andbleedingtime, andbearingstrength.

Therecycledmaterialsthemselvesweretestedfortheirgradation,absorption,density,specificgravity,andfreeze/thawdurability.
The recycledmaterials consisted of a combinationofRCAandRAP,whichwas generally referred to asrecycledaggregate(RA).Therelativeamountofeachwasinitiallyvariedbetween100%RCA/0%RAP,70%RCA/30%RAP,and50%RCA/50%RAP.Inlateriterations,the50/50blendwasusedtoreplace0%,25%,50%,and75%ofthevirgingranularmaterial.
TheRAwasfoundtogreatlyaffectthebleedingrateofthematerial,whichissignificantforamateriallikeu-fillwithhighwatercontent.Thisalsoaffectedthebearingcapacityofthematerialsasasignificantamountofwaterremainedatthematerial’ssurfacelayerforconsiderablylongerperiodsoftime.
Fieldtrialswereundertakenwheretrencheswereexcavatedandsubsequentlyfilledwithu-fill.Thesetrencheswere allowed to sit for four hours andwere then paved over. The pavementwas then loaded to test formaterial’sbearingcapacity.
Theresultsofthelabandfieldtestsindicatethatu-fillproducedwithupto25%RAcanperformsimilarlytou-fillproducedwith100%virginaggregate.Beyondthislevel,thebearingcapacityofthematerialattheageoffourhourswasnotsufficienttosupporttheconstructionloadingthatwouldberequiredinthefield.
