INTRODUCTION

The course examines the field and domain of curriculum, and curriculum approaches and theory; philosophical, historical, psychological and sociological foundations of curriculum; curriculum development, design, aims, goals, objectives, implementation & evaluation; curriculum issues and trends; models of instruction, direct instruction, guided discovery instruction and pure discovery instructions; and basic concepts of curriculum and instruction in special and preschool education. Students will be taught to understand and use the knowledge about the field and domain of curriculum, and curriculum approaches and theory; philosophical, historical, psychological and sociological foundations of curriculum; curriculum development and design; curriculum aims, goals and objectives; curriculum implementation and evaluation; curriculum issues and trends; models of instruction, direct instruction, guided discovery instruction and pure discovery instruction, and basic concepts of curriculum and instruction in special and preschool education. LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. explain the field and domain of curriculum, and curriculum approaches and theory;

2. discuss philosophical, historical, psychological and sociological foundations of curriculum; curriculum development and design;

3. explain curriculum aims, goals and objectives; curriculum implementation and evaluation; curriculum issues and trends inclusive of curriculum and instruction in special and preschool education, and 4. Analyse, and evaluate models of instruction, direct instruction, guided discovery instruction and pure discovery instructions to classroom instruction.5. Develop lessons for instructional purposes.

(4) Developing a Thinking Curriculum

Assignment 2: 30 marks (Pair/Group)Case Study:

Work in a pair or a group of three (3). Select an instructional issue you are interested in. Carry out a study to address the issue.

For example, you are interested to find out how one teaches English/Mathematics in your school. You wish to understand the issues, concerns, and challenges, etc. he/she faces while teaching the subject English as a second language. You have to Interview him/her on his/her strategies, and if necessary, you have to interview other teachers and the school managers/administrators as well in order to gather information about the case you are studying.
