General Meeting

This year at our general membership meeting we have some pretty

important positions up for election.

President - term 2015-2016

Secretary - term 2015-2016 2 Board Seats - term 2015-2016 (Rick and Janet).

If you are interested in being nominated for one of these positions

please review the duties as outlined in the bylaws on this website. Al-

so, you might visit with the outgoing officer or board member to get

more information.... ~President Marilyn Duncan

Membership Suspension

In response to behavior detrimental to the OkFQHR’s image, unsportsmanlike

conduct, and endangerment to other people and horses the OkFQHR Board of

Directors has suspended the 2014 OkFQHR membership of Grady Dougless.

This suspension also carries a one year probationary period for the year 2015, if

a reoccurrence happens during the one year probation period, his membership

will automatically and immediately be revoked permanently.

View from the Pens: Rick Huffstutlar Midsummer, it is, but not quite like the midsummers

we've had lately. Last week was the only truly hot

weather and this week it's cool again. It's been a long

time since we've seen this much grass at any time of

year. Sure hope the rain they're predicting for this

week comes. We're gonna fertilize the Bermuda grass

in the morning and pray for the best.

Speaking of Bermuda grass, did you know that there

are groups that list it as an invasive weed? I guess if

you've ever tried to keep it out of your garden, flower

bed, or cotton crop, you might agree, but it's done an

awful lot of good for a lot of people an livestock to be

classed as a weed. Old world bluestem and its cultivars are also being heavi-

ly maligned right now. Grasses such as Plains, WW Spar, Ironmaster, and

King Ranch bluestem, are lumped together as " yellow bluestem" (seems ra-

ther contradictory to me), and listed alongside musk thistle and tumbleweed

as invasive weeds. In the words of a friend of mine, "Sometimes a

college education can sure get in a person's way." It's all about perception. If

you're trying to reclaim native habitat these grasses can be a problem. If

you're trying to produce forage or hay on a large scale these grasses can be a

Godsend.

If you've stayed with me this far, thank you, but you must be really

starved for entertainment. Your Directors and officers have withstood quite a

year of trials so far. First with the youth versatility decision from last year

and now with our suspension of a member. I won't go into detail here but

rest assured each and every one of us agonized over both decisions and came

to an agreement that we all felt was in the best interest of the organization in

both cases. I think you can be proud of your governing body of being willing

to listen to all sides, weigh the facts and implement decisions such as this.

Having said that, you need to remember, elections are Aug 29 at the general

membership meeting. If you are interested in one of these open seats please

step forward and take part in one of these opportunities for personal growth.

Take advantage of the cooler weather and ride every chance you get. Oh and,

write if you find work. Rick

2015 Free Show Stall

There is ONE FREE SHOW STALL ($35 value) awaiting any member for every

$500 in sponsorship donations, cash or merchandise (all merchandise donations need

to be approved by the president) during the 2014 show year.

To the member who recruits the most sponsors in 2013, there will be a FREE SHOW

STALL for the ENTIRE 2015 SHOW SEASON ($140 value ).

Dear Club Members,

Please recruit a sponsor for the 2014 Show Season. Just ask your favorite business in

your town to sponsor you, or to advertise with the OKFQHR club. Our club will sup-

ply them a banner, announce them at our shows, list them in the directory, awards pro-

gram, and news letter, and will put them on the website - a pretty good advertising re-

turn on their sponsorship money! The sponsor forms are on the webpage, along with

the widow cards, and our club brochures that tell about our club and lists the show

dates.

Also, don't forget to bring a friend to the next show! Perhaps they will join in the fun

and competition of the OKFQHR. The office and officers would be happy to help

someone register their horse and to become a new member. Take a moment to appreci-

ate the enjoyment of owning, training, and showing a foundation bred quarter horse.

Now, share that with a

friend.

See you at the shows,

Mary, Debbie, and Janet

Explanation of OKFQHR Class Divisions

OKFQHR offers five divisions of classes: Open, Beginner, Novice, Amateur and Youth. The-

se divisions are based on the RIDER’S eligibility, they have nothing to do with the age of the

horse or how much the horse has or hasn’t been shown. Please make sure you understand the

following so you will know what you are eligible for and have what you need to enter the ap-

propriate classes. However, this is only a summary of what is in the FQHR Rulebook. As an

exhibitor, it is your responsibility to obtain a copy of the Rulebook and understand the

rules before you show.

OPEN DIVISION

The Open Division is for any rider. There are no restrictions except that the horse must be registered with FQHR to be shown in sanctioned classes and the rider must be a member of FQHR. Points earned in the Open Division accumulate over the lifetime of the horse and if the horse is sold, the points transfer with the horse. Also, you do not exclude yourself from showing in the Open classes if you show in one of the other divisions. (For example, the same rider can show in both Amateur and Open Ranch Pleasure if they quality as an Amateur.) No horse may be shown by more than one exhibitor in any one class.

BEGINNER DIVISION

The intent of the Beginner Division is to help the beginning show exhibitor get ac-quainted with and confident in the show arena environment. Exhibitors in the Be-ginner classes CANNOT have ANY points in ANY performance class. The Begin-ner classes are non-sanctioned and the horse does not have to be registered with FQHR. The ownership relationship to the rider is irrelevant in the Beginner classes. The rider must be a member of OKFQHR. There are no national points but OKFQHR year-end awards will be given for these classes. If you qualified for year-end awards (showed at three shows) in a Beginner class in previous years, you are not eligible

NOVICE or NOVICE AMATEUR DIVISION (These terms are interchangeable.)

A person is considered Novice when he/she has not shown, judged, trained, or assisted in training a horse for remuneration, either directly or indirectly, nor received compensation for instructing another person in riding, training, or showing a horse in competition for five previous years. Any approved horse show judge is ineligible.

AMATEUR DIVISION

A person is considered Amateur when he/she has not shown, judged, trained, or assisted in training a horse for remuneration, either directly or indirectly, nor received compensation for in-structing another person in riding, training, or showing a horse in competition for five previous years. Any approved horse show judge is ineligible. Points will be awarded following the same point system used in the Open Division. However, points in the Amateur Division are calculated on a horse/rider basis and do not transfer with ownership.

A rider may not have won $250 lifetime earnings in any one event or may not have earned a com-bined total of 10 or more points in recognized associations in any one event prior to January 1 of calendar year. Once you begin the year as a Novice, you can finish the year as a Novice. When a rider becomes ineligible he/she will be moved out of the Novice division as of December 31 of that year and must surrender his/her Novice cards to FQHR within 30 days of notification. No horse may be shown by more than one exhibitor in any one class. In individual working clas-ses, one exhibitor may show two horses. Classes are open to both youth and adults when meeting the criteria above. No youth (under age 18) may show stallions. Points earned in the Novice Division shall not count toward a Certificate of Performance award or any other championship. You do not need a Novice card from FQHR to show at our local affiliate shows. The Novice exhibi-tor must also hold an individual or a joint membership in FQHR. In the Novice Division, the horse must be solely and completely owned by the Novice, an immedi-ate family member or by a business entity that is owned solely by the Novice or their immediate family. Please note that you do not “Novice out” by class or event; it is by division. Once you (not your horse) earn a total of 10 national points or $250 in any one event, in any division, in any recog-nized association, with any combination of horses, you are no longer considered a Novice and cannot show in any Novice classes. For example, if you earn a total of 10 points by showing in both Novice and Amateur Reining, you then have 10 points in a single event and you are no long-er eligible for any Novice classes. Remember that once you begin the year as a Novice, you can finish the year (even if you get your 10 points); that only national points (in any recognized breed association) count; and our non-sanctioned classes (such as Beginner classes and Walk-Trot) do not count against your Novice status as no national points are awarded in those classes.

YOUTH DIVISION The Youth Division is restricted to unmarried individuals 18 years and under (age as of January 1). In order to show in Youth classes to receive FQHR points, a youth must hold a current FQHR Youth Membership. Youth may show in Novice, Amateur (if they meet the criteria) or Open classes under an individual or joint membership. On the affiliate level, any youth wishing to participate in a Youth event may do so without a FQHR membership, as long as they are riding a FQHR registered horse and are a mem-ber of OKFQHR. No FQHR points will be awarded to that individual or horse. All other FQHR Youth Activity Rules should be followed. Youth may not exhibit stallions in any class. FQHR points are awarded on a one horse/one rider combination using the same criteria as the Open division and they cannot be transferred or applied to any other horse/rider combi-nation. Two youth in one family may exhibit the same horse on a one horse/one rider basis but not in the same class. Any horse exhibited by a youth in a FQHR approved youth class must be owned by the contestant or one of the contestant’s parents, grandparents, siblings or legal guardian as evidenced by records on file with FQHR for FQHR points to be awarded. Leased horses that are owned or leased by any person other than those listed above are ineligible for FQHR points in approved Youth classes unless lease agreements are on file with FQHR prior to the show. No horse may be shown by more than one exhibitor in any one class. In individual working classes a Youth exhibitor may show two horses.

Classes are open to both youth and adults when meeting the criteria above. No youth (under age 18) may show stallions. In order to compete in the Amateur division an exhibitor must have an Amateur card. Ex-hibitors can apply for Amateur status at the show. The Amateur exhibitor must also hold an individual or a joint membership in FQHR. No horse may be shown by more than one exhibitor in any class. In individual working classes, one exhibitor may show two horses. Any points or awards earned in the Amateur Division at any show when said points are earned by an Amateur competing under false pretenses, shall be revoked. In the Amateur Division, the horse must be solely and completely owned by the Amateur, an immediate family member or by a business entity that is owned solely by the Novice

A NOTE ON POINTS:

Points are given by both FQHR and OKFQHR at OKFQHR shows. Please understand the differences. FQHR points are awarded as stated in the FQHR Rule Book. These points become a permanent part of the horse’s record. Points and awards can be earned in three divisions: Open, Amateur (horse/rider combination) and Youth (horse/rider combination). The points are not trans-ferable between divisions nor can points earned in sepa-rate divisions be combined for a Certificate Of Perfor-mance or Conformation or Championship. FQHR points awarded in the Novice Division are for tracking purposes only and shall not count toward a Certificate of Perfor-mance or any other championship. To get a record of your horse’s FQHR points, contact FQHR.

OKFQHR assigns points to track year-end awards only; they are not a permanent part of the horse’s record. Points are given by class, based on the number of entries in each class. Each horse placing first through sixth receives a point for each horse they place above in the class, plus one point. Those points accumulate throughout the year and are used to determine year-end award winners. Points are kept by horse/exhibitor combination. These are the points you see posted on www.okfqhr.com. Every horse/exhibitor combination begins each year with a clean slate.
