After posting a 5-3 mark to end 2010 as the interim head coach, Garrett was awarded the top position in hopes that he could guide a team that had to r ebuild its secondary and offensive line on the fly. Back-to-back 8-8 seasons that saw the team lose the final game of the season to miss the  playoffs has Jerry Jon es making changes. With the departure of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the team is moving from the 3-4 to the 4-3 defense under Monte Kiffin. While the defense has been the center of attention in recent drafts, the Cowboys man- aged only 7 interceptions during the 2012 season. That effort was good enough for t he 31st ranking in the league. In total, t he 19th ranked team in total defense forced only 16 turnovers on the season. While quarterback Tony Romo draws his fair share of criticism, the play of the offensive line is an area that the Cowboys must address moving forwar d. The team set a franchise record for the fewest amount of rushing yards over a 16 gam e season in 20 12. Couple that with seeing their quarterback sacked 36 times on the season, the draft will have to be the area where the team must find a starter or two. While their cap situation isn’t great, restruc- turing a few deals will give them a chance to resign key free agent Anthony Spencer. Key Free Agents  Anthony Spencer, LB - a year after signing the franchise tag and posting 11 sacks, the 29 year old will look to cash in as either a 3-4 LB or a 4-3 DE. Victor Butler, LB - the 26 year old posted 3 sacks once again in limited opportunities. Graded out as high as DeMarcus Ware Mike Jenkins, CB - was a Pro Bowl CB in 2009 and best Dallas CB in 2011. Played in the slot in 2012 after off-season shoulder surgery. Looking for 5 -7M a year in new deal. Felix Jones, RB - often injured but explosive change-of-pace back when healthy. Kenyon Coleman, DE - solid 3-4 run de- fender. Will co me cheap as age is a concern. Kevin Ogletree, WR - after a great opening night to the 2012 sea- son, Ogletree lost his 3rd receiver job to 2nd year receiver Dwayne Harris. Another End of Season Missed Opportunity
