Our Community Assistants and Hall Directors are here to help you. If you have an

problems or concerns feel free to meet with someone and let them know. If you ne

help scheduling a room visit or peer mediation stop by the Housing Oce.

For after hour lock-outs or maintenance issues please call (877) 867-8410 for assistance.

    1. Find ways to admire and appreciate this person. This is the rst move towards getting along. Get beyondappearances. There isnt a person on this earth who doesnt have something interesting about them. Figure out

what it is and observe it, ask about it, talk about it. People respond well to people who see something admirable inthem.

    2. Assume good will. The thing you are convinced the other person is doing specically to annoy you may well bjust a habit or a holdover from the way things are in his or her home. Before you leap to the conclusion that yourroomie is out to get you by blasting heavy metal during study hours, ask if this is the way he or she always studiesIt just might be the case!

    3. Communicate. No one can read minds. If you dont like your roommate to borrow your shampoo, CDs, or ashdrive, say something. Simmering in resentment will only make it more dicult to get along. Conversely, you cantread your roommates mind. You dont know if its all right to borrow things unless you ask. You dont want tocreate resentment on their part, either. Communicate in a friendly way. Snapping at people invites them to snapback even harder. What the heck are you doing with my calculator? invites a ght. Instead, try something like,Maybe you dont realize that Im kind of particular about people using my stu. Id really appreciate it if you

wouldnt borrow my calculator without asking.

    4. Communicate about things that interest you. People get interested in people who are interesting. If youlimit your conversation to who gets to use the phone rst, you wont get very far in getting to know your roomie.Lose your shyness. This is the person who hears you snore and sees you rst thing in the morning. Better balancethat with some sharing about movies, music, or harmless gossip.

    5. Negotiate. Somewhere along the line, youve already learned how to state a problem, brainstorm alternatives,

and choose a solution (even if it was in your international relations class). Got a problem? Call a meeting when

neither of you is hungry, tired, or furious and see if you can work it out. Remember, youve got to be reasonable if

you want the other person to listen to reason.

Living with another person is not always the easiest thing in the world.

Living with a complete stranger can be even more dicult. However, with a little patience and a little compromise those tense, awkward

situations can be minimized. Here are 5 helpful tips for managing

    roommate quarrels:
