Concurrent Instruction
3
Concurrent Instruction - is delivering instruction simultaneously for students in-person and virtually for at least part of the lesson
Systems across Maryland and the United States are using concurrent teaching.
What could concurrent instruction look like?● Virtual students join a Google Meet session to view a shared desktop and/or a
camera directed toward the teacher● In-person students are seated in appropriately spaced desks with or without
their devices● Both full group and small group instruction can occur during the class period● Both in-person and virtual students could be asked to do independent work while in
small groups
Concurrent Instruction
4
Benefits● Provides in-person direct instruction for students whom remote learning is not
meeting their instructional needs● Allows families to have a virtual option● Provides important in-person engagement and interaction to support the social
emotional health of students● Allows schools to maintain their master schedules
Challenges● Considerations for modes of engaging students in person and virtually● Requires implementation and adjustment as we go● Requires professional development
Concurrent Instruction
5
Professional Learning● Utilizes Wednesdays for teacher professional learning● Designed specifically for the model selected ● Will include:
○ opportunities for teacher collaboration○ sharing of best practices○ lessons learned○ just-in-time supports
Planning for a 4th Quarter Model

additional staff
Lunch Options● Grab and Go
Instruction● Full day of concurrent instruction

Partial Day Models
7
Benefits● Cohorting of students in classrooms● Limiting of transitions● Brings students back into buildings
Challenges● Logistical challenges for families● Less than a half day of face to face instruction● Travel time interrupts instructional day

● Students come to buildings two times per week (AA/BB format)● Students are instructed by their teachers four times per week● Students cohorted with their class for in-person instruction, no transitions● Students would not eat lunch while in school ● Concurrent instruction part of the day (SEL, ELA - reading and writing)● Synchronous instruction part of the day (Math, Related Arts, Content)● Partial day PreK might have to regroup (maintain same teacher whenever
possible)● Tiered bus schedules
