Intro Hello everyone! This is Nancy Ward, the Nurse Consultant for OECOSL. We are bringing you an update to Nicole’s webinar from December 2 based on the latest CDC information

Review of termsClose Contact You were within 6 feet of someone who has

COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more withina 24 hour period.

You provided care at home or in a child careprogram to someone who is sick with COVID 19

You had direct physical contact with the person(hugged or kissed them)

You shared eating or drinking utensils They sneezed, coughed, or somehow got

respiratory droplets on you

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So first I want to review what close contact is. This is really important to understand when you are talking to your local health department. It is important that you are very clear about the potential exposure. Read slide.

More about close contact

Contact was within two (2) days of theperson showing symptoms

Or when no symptoms, within two (2) daysof the positive test date

You are a close contact if you are within six(6) feet even if you are wearing a mask

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So another important piece of information that is needed whether you are talking to your licensing consultant or the health department is who was in close contact (as we described on the previous slide) with a person the 48 hours before a person shows symptoms or without symptoms but has a positive test. Masks/cloth face coverings are meant to reduce the amount of respiratory droplets the wearer may put into the air.
Page 4: COVID-19 Revised Updates PowerPoint Presentationhas COVID-19 • Watch for fever (100.4), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19 • If possible, stay away from

What does it mean to quarantine?• Stay home for 14 days, or a shortened

period based upon local circumstances, after your last contact with a person whohas COVID-19

• Watch for fever (100.4), cough, shortness ofbreath, or other symptoms of COVID-19

• If possible, stay away from others, especially people who are at higher risk forgetting very sick from COVID-19

Presenter
Presentation Notes
read slide. So this has been consistent from day 1. if you’ve had that direct contact with a person within the 2 days before their symptoms or positive test. We have learned more about this virus and that most exposed folks who show symptoms will begin them 5-8 days after exposure

What to do if a positive case is reported?

A child who has been attending child care center, in the two-year-old classroom, tests positive for COVID-19. His/her parents contact the child care and report the positive test and indicate that he/she will be staying home. The child care has been keeping the same children together each day with the same set of teachers (one primary teacher and a sub who covers lunch and breaks).

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So this is a child who attends the child care the day before a positive test.

1. Contact their licensing consultant2. Contact their local health department3. Close off the 2-year-old classroom for up to 24 hours.

Clean and disinfect the area according to CDCguidelines and OECOSL guidance.

4. Contact families in the 2-year-old classroom to letthem know that their child has had direct contactwith someone who is positive for COVID-19. Thesechildren would be considered close contacts(quarantine) and should consult with their healthcareprovider for evaluation and determination if testing isrecommended.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Read slide Remind of mitigation strategies. The rest of the children outside the classroom are not close contacts, unless they are siblings, in which case they need to quarentine.
Page 7: COVID-19 Revised Updates PowerPoint Presentationhas COVID-19 • Watch for fever (100.4), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19 • If possible, stay away from

5. Contact all other families in the child careand notify them that a positive case hasbeen identified in the child care. Informthem that they should watch for anysymptoms associated with COVID-19 andstress the importance of mitigationstrategies such as saying home when sick, washing hands, wearing masks and socialdistancing. These children may continueto attend.

6. Send home the primary teacher and thesub who have been working in the 2-year-old classroom to begin their quarantineperiod and provide them information ontesting sites.

Page 8: COVID-19 Revised Updates PowerPoint Presentationhas COVID-19 • Watch for fever (100.4), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19 • If possible, stay away from

The two-year-old classroom should be closed for at least 7 days. Only teachers and children without symptoms and who complete a COVID-19 test (day 5 or later) and test negative may return on day 8. Teachers and children without symptoms who do not get tested may return on day 11.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So here is where things have changed. CDC now says the classroom needs to be closed for at least 7 days, but not necessarily 14. Teachers and children without symptoms who complete a Covid-19 test day 5 or later, can return as early as day 8. Those who do not get tested and remain symptom free can return on day 11 (10 days quarantine and no symptoms)
Page 9: COVID-19 Revised Updates PowerPoint Presentationhas COVID-19 • Watch for fever (100.4), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19 • If possible, stay away from

What to do if a positive case is reported? A teacher, in the 4-year-old classroom, in a ministry comes to work and begins to feel ill. Due to the protocols of assessing staff daily the teacher is sent home once symptoms were noticed. The teacher does go to see her physician and is given a rapid COVID test. The test comes back positive and the teacher notifies the ministry of the positive test result. The ministry has been keeping the same children together each day with the same teachers. However, the breakroom has been an area where teachers have tended to congregate and eat lunch. Upon discussion it has been learned that many of the teachers have been around each other eating lunch, without masks, for several days while the ill teacher was present.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Read slide. So many staff were in close contact (less than 6 feet) of the infected teacher who was not wearing a mask in the 2 days before her symptoms.

These children may continue toattend.

6. Notify all teaching staff that they may have hadcontact with a co-worker who has testedpositive for COVID-19 due to the practice ofbreak times. Any teacher that has been eatingin the break room with the teacher and has hadclose contact (two days before symptoms) needsto begin a quarantine period.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Read slide. Remind of mitigation factors. Remind of the practice for break rooms per EO 20-48 which requires written plans and reducing the number of persons who can be present in common gathering areas like break rooms for orange and red counties.

What to do if a positive case is reported? A parent of a child, who is attending a child care home, contacts the home operator and indicates that he/she has tested positive for COVID-19. Based upon the makeup of the child care home, all children have been together with the home operator and there are no other staff. The child care home operator has had pick up and drop off policies that have not allowed parents into the child care and thus direct contact with the parent has not occurred for all children. The child care home operator has also required that all parents wear masks during drop off and pick up and has worn a mask as well.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So things can look a little different in a child care home. Read slide.

1. Contact their licensing consultant2. Contact their local health department3. Inform the family that until the 10th day of the quarantine period is over

and the child is experiencing no symptoms, or the child receives anegative COVID-19 test and has quarantined for 7 days, that the childcannot return to the child care.

4. Contact families of the other children in the child care and let themknow that their child has had contact with a child whose parent hastested positive, but their child is not yet considered a close contact.Inform families that until the 10th day of the quarantine period is overand the child is experiencing no symptoms, or the child receives anegative COVID-19 test (day 5 or later) and has quarantined for 7 days, that the exposed child cannot return to the child care.

Other children can continue to attend due to no direct contact with the parent that tested positive. No other steps would be necessary unless directed by the local health department.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As a home operator, what do you do? Read slide. Item 3- since the child is a “close contact” of the parent, the child must quarantine. The quarantine period will start when the child is able to be away from the parent. If the child is able to isolate and has no symptoms after 10 days of quarantine, they may return to child care. If the child is able to isolate and is tested day 5 or after, the child may return day 7 with a negative test.
