Bangladesh: According to the Corona Kotha, a bulletin that highlights feedback from community members

about COVID 19, which was developed by BBC Media Action and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society

on behalf of Shongjog/CWC - people living in rural and urban areas have been raising their concerns

especially in terms of being able to procure food as well as the affordability and quality of protective face

masks.

The RCCE (risk communication community engagement) pillar conducted a rapid assessment survey

focusing on the service uptake of the COVID-19 helpline and social stigma among adolescents, youth and

community members: 14% of the respondents do not know what to do if they observe symptoms of COVID-

19. Another 14% reported that they would go to hospital if they had any symptoms. 9% of the respondents

have called the COVID-19 helpline number, 48% of those who called reported that they did not receive any

response or support. 46% of the respondents think that people are scared to call the helpline number,

including 27% who are scared because their neighbours would ‘mistreat/abuse’ them if they were positive.

22 % of the respondents reported that people in their community mistreat/abuse others because of their

health condition and profession.

UNICEF supported the development of a communication strategy and campaign for promoting compulsory

mask use in Bangladesh.

The Minister of Finance announced an increased budget for social protection in FY2020-2021, which is

now at 16.18 per cent of the total budget and 3.01 per cent of GDP.

Violence against women and children has increased by 31 per cent due to COVID-19, a study by the

Manusher Jonno Foundation suggests. To this end, UNICEF’s case management and follow-up reached

212,627 children from March to June. UNICEF provided psychosocial support (PSS) for 53,367 children

(boys 33,207 and girls 20,160), 260 children with disabilities, and 14,916 parents (male 8,584 and 6,332

female). 84,532 children received other kind of psycho-social supporr, while 59,819 children called the Child

Helpline.

UNICEF is also working with the Ministry of Mass and Primary Education (MoPME) and Ministry of

Education (MoE) to support the learning engagement through TV, Radio, Mobile and Internet.

Heavy Raining: Following heavy rains and predictions for further rainfall, the pre-activation trigger has been

reached for the Anticipatory Humanitarian Action, pilot 2020 monsoon in Bangladesh. Currently, the

estimates are for 7.53 million people to be exposed to moderate flooding with around 2.8 million people

across nine districts to be temporary displaced. The initial Anticipatory Action Pilot has been initiated with

funds released, but activities would not begin until the 5 day-trigger is reached.

2,738 new cases and 55 deaths were reported on 5 July, bringing the total cases to 162,417 and death

toll to 2,052.

Brunei: Brunei Darussalam will enter Level 3 of its de-escalation plan on 6 July with further easing of

restrictions:

As of 1 July, the COVID-19 Relief Fund has collected BND$14.3 million.

Japan: 240 new cases were reported on 5 July, bringing the total to 19,522. Death toll at 977.

Tokyo Governor who was re-elected for a second four-year term on 6 July, has again requested the

residents not to make nonessential trips to other prefectures.

Local governments fretted over the coronavirus spread as they opened shelters for evacuees from the

torrential rains in southwestern Japan on 4 July, aiming to ensure social distancing and take proper

sanitary measures.

Malaysia: According to UNHCR, hate speech against refugees (particularly towards the Rohingya

community) continue to be prevalent online, potentially spurred by ongoing news about the Rohingya boat

arrivals.

UNHCR was invited by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations for a dialogue with

various stakeholders to discuss stronger collaboration on issues surrounding the protection of the Rohingya

refugee community in Kedah and other states, arising from xenophobia and anti-Rohingya sentiments.

Since the commencement of the Movement Control Order on 18 March, 40 child protection cases and 24

sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) survivors have been assisted through remote case

management services.

5 new cases were reported on 5 July, bringing total to 8,663 while the death toll stands at 121.

Singaporeans with MySecond Home pass must have ‘fit to travel’ certificates (issued by Singapore) to enter

the country.

From 1 July, Sabah is opening its land and sea borders to foreign workers from China.

Malaysia is still not opening its international borders to foreign tourists and workers; the country's tourism

sector will need four years to recover, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

Maldives: Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi expressed solidarity with

protestors demanding justice for victims of sexual assault. Exact figures are, however unclear as case

statistics has not been published since January 2020.

The Government has officially reopened its offices and institutions on 5 July.

The response operations shifted to the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) under the Ministry of

Health. The State of Public Health Emergency is extended until 14 July 2020. The Government is planning

to reopen the Maldivian borders for international travel on 15 July 2020.

State expenditure to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic exceeded MVR 976 million (US$ 63.3 million).

The Government announced a 40% subsidy for the electricity bills of June 2020.

Over 3,200 undocumented workers from Bangladesh have been repatriated.

33 new cases and 1 death were reported on 5 July, bringing the total cases to 2,468 and death toll to 12.

Nepal: The UNCT in Nepal, under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator and UNDP’s technical lead,

has initiated the process of developing the UN’s Socio-Economic Response Framework for Nepal. WHO,

UNICEF, UNDP, UNRCO and UN Women will be leading the five pillars, aiming to complete it by early

August.

The Government of Nepal (GoN) has extended the lockdown to 22 July. The suspension of domestic and

international commercial passenger flights has been extended to 21 July. Special permission from Civil

Aviation Authority of Nepal is required for rescue flights, freighter flights and flights related to the medical

and other essential supplies.

The COVID-19 Crisis Management Committee (CCMC) has recommended provincial governments to

upgrade quarantine centres to meet set standards and ensure necessary monitoring.

Repatriation of Nepali migrant workers from the Gulf and other countries continues. More than 15,052

people have been repatriated between 5 to 30 June.

293 new cases were reported on 5 July, bringing the total to 15,784 and 31 deaths.

Philippines: the country observed a record single day high of 2,434 new cases on 5 July, bringing the total

number of infections to 44,254 with 1,297 fatalities and 11,942 recoveries. Critical care resources of

hospitals in Metro Manila are at moderate risk level with 68 per cent of isolation beds and 51 per cent of

intensive care units occupied, while 30 per cent of mechanical ventilators are used.

Malaysia has begun the deportation of more than 5,000 undocumented Filipinos who have been held in

detention facilities in Sabah, with the first batch of 395 migrants of mostly women and children arriving in

Tawi-Tawi province and Zamboanga City on 4 July. The returnees will be confined for 14 days in various

quarantine facilities with hygiene kits and family food packs provided by the state authorities.

Singapore: As of 29 June, Singapore has conducted 757,746 tests. 136 news cases were reported on 5

July, bringing the total to 44,800. The death toll stands at 26.

The Ministry of Health has stepped up surveillance and contact tracing of community-transmission cases

in June.

Singaporean Foreign Minister has rejected the Indonesian government’s request to reopen the borders to

the tourist areas of Bintan and Batam in Riau Islands.

Afghanistan: 279 new cases and 38 deaths were reported on 5 July, bringing the total cases to 32,951

and death toll to 864.

Cambodia: The ministry of economy and finance and the ministry of health have collaborated with local

insurance companies to issue the $50,000 insurance certificate required for foreign travelers.

The 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM13) scheduled to be held in Cambodia in November has been

postponed until mid-2021.

Fiji: Fiji has been striving to restart its tourism industry by funding Fiji Airways, easing restrictions and

providing other boosting measures.

India: 23,932 new cases and 421 deaths were reported on 5 July, bringing the total cases to 697,836 and

death toll to 19,700.

Visitors to the Taj Mahal will have to wear masks at all times, keep their distance and not touch its marble

surfaces when it reopens on 6 July.

Indonesia: Indonesia reported 82 deaths on 5 July, to take the total death toll to 3,171. Daily confirmed

cases of coronavirus jumped by 1,607.

The Bali provincial administration is preparing to welcome foreign visitors in September.

President Joko Widodo has touted online courses as the default mode of learning for many university

students.

Iran: 2,560 new cases and 163 deaths were reported on 5 July, bringing the total cases to 240,438 and

death toll to 11,571.

Iranians who do not wear masks will be denied state services and workplaces that fail to comply with health

protocols will be shut for a week.

Iran has increased the production of COVID-19 medical items and equipment and is producing 2,300,000

masks; 145,000 N95 masks; 4.5 mln medical gloves; and 400,000 liters disinfectants daily.

Laos: UNICEF Laos handed over personal protective equipment worth US$30,000 to the Lao Women’s

Union and Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare on 1 and 2 July.

Mongolia: The UN Joint Programme on “Strengthening the national capacity to suppress transmission and

maintain essential services in the COVID-19 pandemic in Mongolia” was officially launched. The amount of

the Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Joint Programme is USD 1 million and it is a part of the UN multilateral

response in Mongolia.

Myanmar: A special relief flight carrying experts and personnel from five different organizations landed at

the Yangon International Airport on 5 July.

Pakistan: 3,191 new cases and 93 deaths were reported on 5 July, bringing the total cases to 228,474 and

death toll to 4,712.

PR China: 4 new cases were reported on 5 July.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China and Cambodia have demonstrated that the China-Cambodia

community with a shared future is unbreakable.

ROK: 48 new cases and 1 death were reported on 6 July, bringing the total to 13,139 and 284 deaths.

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on 5 July that the government will legislate fines and take other legal

action against individuals and business entities found to have defied quarantine rules.

Sri Lanka: 2 new cases were reported on 5 July bringing the total to 2,076, while the death toll stands at

11.

Sri Lanka’s schools will re-open on 6 July, for nearly 800,000 students.

Over 2,000 Policemen have been deployed in public places of the Western Province to detect persons who

are not wearing facemasks.

Sri Lanka’s Central Bank, in consultation with the Government, has introduced the Saubagya Covid-19

Renaissance Loan Scheme to provide working capital loans.

Thailand: Five new imported cases were reported on 6 July, taking the total to 3,195 with 58 deaths and

3,038 recoveries. It is noteworthy to mention that there has been no locally transmitted cases for 42 days.

The government will only allow foreign patients who have tested negative for Covid-19 to enter Thailand

for treatment.

Vietnam: Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc and his Lao counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith on 5 July

exchanged information and experience in combating the COVID-19 pandemic as well as specific measures

to foster collaboration in various fields in the post-pandemic period.

Global

Daily Figures: According to WHO, the world has seen a record breaking 24 hours rise in cases globally

with 212,326 new cases on 5 July. Johns Hopkins reports 11,419,638 confirmed cases with 534,267 deaths

and 6,161,732 recoveries as of 6 July.

Australia: The boundary lines between Victoria and New South Wales is closed after a spike in COVID-19

cases in Melbourne.

Australia has around 8,500 cases and 106 deaths to date.

Brazil: 26,051 new cases were recorded in Brazil in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,603,055 and

64,867 deaths on 5 July.

Italy: COVID-19 has exacerbated existing inequalities according to the Italian National Statistics Institute

(ISTAT).

As of 5 July, there were 241,611 cases with 34,861 fatalities and 192,108 recoveries reported in Italy.

Mexico: The total number of fatalities surpassed thirty thousand on 4 July, now standing at 30,366 with

251,165 cases.

Russia: 6,736 new cases were confirmed on 5 July, taking the total to 681,251 with 10,145 deaths. The

Health Minister said that Russians shouldn't expect a return to their ‘normal pre-coronavirus lives’ before

February 2021.

Spain: Catalonia region locked down an area with around 200,000 residents following a surge in cases and

all movements to/from A Marina in Galicia are halted for 5 days.

Spain has reported 28,385 deaths 250,545 case to date.

UK: Some experts have warned that the fallout of the new pandemic means that thousands could die from

cancer as they weren't able to get treated on time.

The state government is close to making a deal of £500 million supply for 60 million doses of a potential

vaccine made by Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline.

There were 286,931 cases with 44,305 fatalities and 1,375 recoveries in the UK as of 5 July.
