COVID-19 AND CA
Forty-First Year | Volume 23 | 2020
New Outlets, New Ways of Thinking, and Newfound Creativity

F R O M T H EP R E S I D E N T
This year has brought unexpected and unique challenges. We never thought the last day students would come to campus for school would be March 13 or that graduation would be pushed back to June 20. Between those dates Columbia Academy did something it had never done before — transitioned to online learning for all students in junior kindergarten through 12th-grade.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our teachers quickly transitioned to virtual school, with students using Google Classroom or Zoom meetings to continue their education. I have never been prouder of our faculty than during this challenging time. The CA teachers demonstrated their commitment to serving our students and accomplishing our school’s mission by facing the challenge head-on, doing whatever it took to keep students learning.
With every challenge comes opportunity, and our students, faculty, and staff continue to rise to meet the challenges that appear. As the 2020-21 school year begins, we are committed to bringing students and staff back to campus safely. Our mission is best accomplished and our students learn and grow the most when they are present, face-to-face with our dedicated Christian teachers and coaches.
There will always be challenges as long as this world remains, and I remind all of us to remember the words of our Lord in John 16:33, where He says, “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart; I have overcome the world.” The God we serve is greater than any challenge we might face, and He is faithful. May we look to Him for guidance, wisdom, and strength.
We humbly ask for your prayers for a safe and successful school year. Thank you for those prayers and for your support, and please continue to join with us in our mission to impact the lives of young people for eternity.

Upper school science teacher, Kelley Loveless, left June 8, 2020, for Mesa, Arizona with her husband Jeff and two daughters, Olivia and Lola, for a mission trip with the Salt River Church of Christ. Much of their planned work was canceled due to COVID-19, but the Loveless family trusted God to guide them in His work throughout their time in Arizona. This is their story in Kelley Loveless’s words.
“When we got there, our main focus became helping the Native Americans affected by this virus. Due to shortages and restrictions on cleaning items and some food, we spent hours every day searching for items to meet the needs of the Native Americans. Most of the reservations were on a daily curfew during the week and were not allowed to leave their homes on the weekend. This makes it extremely difficult for them to get the basic items they need to get through this pandemic. The first two weeks we were in Arizona, we were able to collect enough items to fill a 14 foot trailer and take to the Navajo Nation. They were filled with so much love and gratitude. With the help of Salt River Church of Christ, we were able to fill the trailer two more times for multiple deliveries. These supplies were taken to Many Farms and Kayenta on the Navajo reservation and the White Mountain Apache. During our time there, Jeff was able to be a part of several Bible studies and also taught Wednesday and Sunday night Bible classes via Zoom. He was also able to baptize a woman into Christ. We are so thankful for the Salt River Church of Christ and the time we were able to spend and serve with them. We are also extremely grateful for the trust and support that the Graymere Church of Christ showed us during our time in Arizona.”
We appreciate Mrs. Loveless and the servant hearts of her family. Even amidst a global pandemic, they made it their goal to help others.

LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS PUBLISH BOOK:
“THE COLUMBIA ACADEMY ANTHOLOGY: LOWER SCHOOL EDITION”
Columbia Academy Lower School students hosted a book release Dec. 18, 2019. The book, “The Columbia Academy Anthology: Lower School Edition,” features 68 students from third-sixth-grade.
Dr. James Thomas, president of Columbia Academy, said, “Encouraging students to write at a young age is important in them becoming proficient writers for their future educational success. We are so proud of our students’ creativity and abilities, and we are thankful for our teachers who help develop these skills each day. We are especially thankful for Dr. Hillard’s help in making this exciting project a reality.”
The release was made possible by Dr. Mark Hilliard of The Woodfine Young Writers Guild, a division of The Hilliard Institute located in Spring Hill, Tenn. The purpose of the Woodfine Young Writers Guild is to advance literacy skills and encourage a love for reading and writing in young people. The master of the Guild is Dr.
For most sports, running is a punishment, unless you run cross country. This year Columbia Academy had both a full boys and girls teams. Starting in June, they worked six days a week to get better and stronger. These teams were led by three athletes who made it to the state championship.
Sophomore Annabelle Cothran, freshman Jaelyn Hickerson, and sophomore Connor Henson all qualified for the D2 Small Schools State Championship. Only the top 10 individuals and top three teams in each respective region advanced to compete. Annabelle Cothran advanced to the state championship by winning the regional in 20:28.04 while Jaelyn Hickerson finished in 10th position with a 22:22.78. Connor Henson finished runner up in the boy’s regional, running a 16:28.53.
These Bulldogs ran for the state championship Nov. 2, 2019, at Nashville’s Iroquois Steeplechase Course for the state
David Woodfine, a long-time educator in Oxford, England, and the chancellor of The Hilliard Institute.
Dr. Hilliard met with all students in third-sixth-grade on the Columbia campus to instruct them in writing. Students then
submitted short stories for review. The best were published in the anthology. In total, there were 150 submissions. Approximately 80 were chosen to be edited by a large board of professionals, including four editors from Ireland, two from England, and five from the United States. The top stories were published in the anthology.
The anthology is available for purchase for $10 with all proceeds being donated to the Columbia Academy Lower School Library. More than 200 copies sold during the pre-order phase. Additional copies will be for sale at Duck River Books, the Columbia Academy Dawg House Gift Shop, or through the Columbia Academy Lower School Library.
championship. In the girls’ race, Annabelle Cothran ran a 20:30 and placed fifth, earning All State honors for the second straight year. Jaelyn Hickerson earned a 24th place finish with a 22:26.06, capping off an outstanding freshman campaign. On the boys’ side, Connor Henson placed sixth with a 17:00.63, earning All-State honors for a second consecutive year.

Congratulations to Nathan Hixson, Spring Hill campus principal, for winning Teacher of the Month for November 2019 after a parent submitted an essay regarding his hard work and dedication to the school. This award is sponsored by the Columbia Daily Herald and Family Advantage Federal Credit Union. Students enjoyed throwing confetti and surprising him during a Circle of Friends meeting!
“New” and “unexpected” are a couple of terms that spring to mind when reflecting upon the past school year at Columbia Academy at Spring Hill.
We hit the ground running in the fall with a renovated campus, additional class offerings, and some new faces! Our campus was beautiful thanks to the efforts of so many individuals. I recall demolition beginning the last school day of the previous year and finishing touches were being applied the morning of our Sunday orientation day...quite the whirlwind!
Another enhancement to our school was our grade level offerings. We had little pattering feet coming down the hall that we hadn’t heard before...three-year-olds! We expanded our preschool and while they may have started small, boy, did that class finish strong. By the time spring came, we were at capacity and couldn’t have been more pleased with the success of that group. Our teacher, Mrs. Michele, did a wonderful job of creating a stimulating and engaging environment for their young minds and her fun spirit ensured a successful and memorable school day. We were also ecstatic to be able to ‘hang on’ to our fifth-grade students for one more school year with bringing them back! It was a memorable year for this group that had so long been with us. I’ll always have a place in my heart for our departing students...it’s a reminder of the relationship that is established in Spring Hill and how unique our campus is.
Finally, we added new faces to our school that contributed to our well-rounded faculty. Mrs. Alice Dahlstrom and Mr. Chris Carroll joined the team and did a fine job of being servant leaders.
Spring Hill CampusWHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE
Through three quarters of the school year, everything was going just like normal. We had a fun 50th day of school celebration, a successful cross country season, awards ceremonies, and planned assessments. Then, it struck. The COVID-19 pandemic took a dramatic turn that derailed our school year. Amid the chaos there were questions, uncertainty, and even fear. What also became evident during the
tumultuous time was focus, flexibility, and dedication. Within a 24 hour period, our faculty was able to learn unfamiliar teaching practices and implement an abbreviated program quickly. Our students and families were flexible with the curveballs that were thrown their way and handled the transition in stride. I would even go as far to say that our students adapted quickly and were actually eager (most of them) to login daily to learn what the day held! Through it all, dedication was the common theme from everyone involved in our quickly implemented online school. Teachers shared that they hadn’t worked harder in their lives to give the students the best they could create in such short order. Kids were diligent to complete their assignments and benefited greatly from the various means of learning
(Google Classroom, Flipgrid, Zoom, and countless other resources). Parents were also terribly understanding and supportive of our implementation which truly speaks to the attitude of TEAM at our campus! Overall, I was extremely proud of the efforts and attitudes put forth by everyone
involved; TOGETHER, we finished strong! Despite obstacles, hardships, and abbreviated plans - God is good all the time! While the year didn’t end up how we thought it would, it was still productive, beneficial, and definitely memorable. We’re optimistic about the future as CA at Spring Hill continues to do great things in the lives of our children and in our community!

FINE ARTS AT CAThis past year our theatre department had another first in the fall. Instead of a traditional stage show, the students put on a murder mystery dinner theatre. It was a wonderful way to let the students explore improvisational acting in a whole new setting.
After the success of “Oliver” in 2019, we had big expectations for our musical this year. Shrek was a lively, funny and talent-filled production. The seniors took the helm as Shrek (Lincoln Smith), Fiona (Victoria Karkau), Donkey (Cade Harrison), and Lord Farquaad (Phillip Young III) led a cast of sixth-12th grade fairy tale creatures, villagers, castle guards and even dancing skeletons. The students worked hard and created wonderful memories. The theatre department continues to grow in new ways each year, and we look forward to what is to come.

COVID-19 AND CAThere is no doubt that the year 2020 will forever be known for its tumultuous beginning. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) took the world by storm and entered America with a fierceness not seen in decades. Church buildings were empty, the economy stalled, many businesses closed for good, March Madness courts were silent, and schools were closed for the remainder of the school year.
However, in the midst of these unprecedented events Columbia Academy continued to be a beacon of light in our community. We pulled through, tapping into new outlets, new ways of thinking, and newfound creativity. Our teachers remained committed to our students, working tirelessly through virtual classes. This required more patience and resourcefulness than ever before. It has been incredible to watch them come together, though apart, in order to reach their students and to continue classes as if they were not sitting miles apart.
Ben Diles, director of spiritual development, made a special effort to heighten spirits with his encouraging messages sent daily through social media. Athletics Director Pernell Knox paid homage to the athletes who were unable to finish their senior season by lighting up the spring sports fields for 20 minutes for all to see as they drove by campus. The softball team created a fun video to show their support of each other despite the social distancing. The staff from each school created videos to send to students.
Facebook posts were created daily to highlight senior class members, allowing the CA family to send them well wishes through the internet. Drama teacher and photographer Sarah Tatom took and
shared family “porchtraits” to highlight how families were managing the quarantine. Chief Financial Officer Andrew Williams worked tirelessly behind the scenes to take advantage of federal support and eagerly worked through the madness to find relief for CA families who needed it. Dr. JamesThomas met with board members, addressed nervous parents, and made tough decisions in order to care for our students and faculty and ensure their health and wellbeing.
For the first time in Columbia Academy history, March, April, and May passed with a silent campus. Classrooms sat empty, ball fields remained eerily quiet, and graduation ceremonies were altered, but the CA family was virtually closer than ever before. We applaud all those who worked to remain positive and encouraging. We thank God for showing His handprints daily amid the chaos, and we pray His blessings on all our CA families as we close a school year like no other.
In the midst of these unprecedented events, Columbia Academy continued to be a beacon of light in our community. We pulled through, tapping into new outlets, new ways of thinking, and newfound creativity.

We grieve the loss of Mrs. Mary Margaret Lovell this year. She went to her eternal home on the beautiful summer day of July 27, 2020. She follows her husband, Monroe Lovell and her son, J.W. Foster.
Mrs. Lovell had ties to the school that date back to 1929 when her brother attended Columbia Military Academy. She served the school in many ways such as cleaning up campus, cooking, repairing the stained glass windows of Academy Hall, supporting the sports teams, and any other way she could find to lend a helping hand. Mr. and Mrs. Lovell were avid supporters of Columbia Academy and were honored
in many ways, including the naming of the gym, Lovell Hall. In October 2013, Mr. and Mrs. Lovell were inducted into the Dr. Bill Thrasher Athletic Hall of Fame at Columbia Academy. In 2016, she

was named an “Honorary Captain” of the football team and was thrilled in 2019 when the state championship basketball team paid her a special in-person visit to show off their trophy. She will be missed by alumni, students, teachers, staff, and everyone who had the honor of knowing her.
“She was a truly amazing lady, and I’m extremely thankful to have been able to know her and be blessed by her life. As a faithful Christian, I know that she went to her reward, and the thought of her reunion with Monroe is a beautiful and joyous thing. It was a thrill for me to see her and Monroe’s excitement when the Anderson Fieldhouse was built. One of my favorite moments was showing them their reserved seats - top and center of the reserved section. They were so proud.... She will be missed by so many, and I’m thankful to God for being able to know her, ” Columbia Academy President James Thomas said.
“She was a truly amazing lady, and I’m extremely thankful to have been able to know her and be blessed by her life.”- Dr. James Thomas

Columbia Academy Endowment Funds and Giving ReportThank you to the many generous donors who have helped grow the CA endowment. For more than 35 years, families and supporters of Christian education have invested in the future of Columbia Academy by establishing and contributing to endowments at CA. Endowments are established as an investment where the principal remains for perpetuity and only the growth and interest gained are used.
Most of Columbia Academy’s endowed funds were created to provide need-based financial assistance for students. That investment provides financial assistance to students or meets other important needs for teachers and students. During this challenging time, we will be able to bless the lives of more students with financial support to attend CA and learn about God’s word on a daily basis.

Please consider leaving a gift to Columbia Academy after your lifetime through your will or revocable living trust and join these CA Legacy Society members.
Anyone can be part of the CA Legacy Society regardless of the size of your gift or estate. The best way to give depends on your situation and should be discussed with your attorney, accountant and/or financial advisor. We have an attorney who specializes in estates who can confidentially help you define how you want to allocate your estate. If you are interested in becoming part of The CA Legacy Society and would like to meet with our attorney, feel free to contact Dr. James Thomas, President, [email protected] /931-380-8509.
WHAT WILL YOUR LEGACY BE?The sustainability of our Christian school is dependent on generous supporters who believe in our mission and give. Legacy gifts ensure the long-term health of Columbia Academy and our mission. Your estate will be your single, largest opportunity to bless organizations that you believe in. Christian education is needed more than ever for our young people and the future of our society. What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Here are some thingsto consider:
• It’s easy – You simply need a few sentences in your will or trust to complete your gift. You could give specific property, a fixed amount or even a residual gift after other monies have been distributed.
• Your gift has an increased impact to CA – As a 501(c)(3), CA doesn’t pay income tax when gifts are received.
