Brodhead, an Chief Engineer for the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railway (M & M). Mr. Brodhead would later become Presi- dent of M & M. Between 1866-1867, the Clar- ence Covered Bridge was built south of Brodhead. The bridge was built to span the Sugar River on Route 20 (now known as State Road 11 and 81) and was in use for 64 years. In 1931, the bridge came to a tragic end when an overweight truck crossed, breaking through the floor and causing major damage to the structure. By that time, the highway was seeing more automotive travel and requiring the need for a stronger structure. The Clarence Covered Bridge, one of last known Wisconsin covered bridges in use, vanished and was replaced by a more modern structure. The bridge held sweet memories in the hearts of the people of Brodhead and the surrounding areas. Our summer festival was named Covered Bridge Days honoring of those memories. In 1984, the Brodhead Jaycees built a replica of the Clarence Covered Bridge over Norwegian Creek on the Sugar River State Bike Trail. The bridge replica is located approximately 2 1/4 miles north of Brodhead. The closest access is walking from the intersection of Golf Course Rd. and the Sugar River Trail (about 1/4 of a mile). In 2012, the Pearl Island Recreational Corridor (PIRC) committee was formed. A grant was obtained in 2013 and PIRC became a reality and began being promoted as a 3.1-mile public recreational playland. A covered bridge spanning from the east bank of the Mill Race waterway (Putnum Park) across to the west bank of the PIRC plans emerged. Plans were drawn and the bridge will be completed by the fall of 2019 at the park located off W. 3rd Ave, in north- west Brodhead. This is just the beginning of the Pearl Island Recreational Corridor. Our goal is to grow it to a recreational natural park for people to come and enjoy, from an one hundred mile radius and beyond. 8 10 JC Covered Bridge Replica Covered Bridge Days Map Map not to scale A community in the middle of everywhere! Covered Bridge HistoryIn 1856, the present City of

Brodhead was started as a railroad stop by Edward H. Brodhead, an Chief Engineer for the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railway (M & M). Mr. Brodhead would later become Presi-dent of M & M.

Between 1866-1867, the Clar-ence Covered Bridge was built south of Brodhead.

This is just the beginning of the Pearl Island Recreational Corridor. Our goal is to grow it to a recreational natural park for people to come and enjoy, from an one hundred mile radius and beyond.
