EXECUTIVE HEALTH

Is a sore back interfering with your life? You are notalone! Nearly four out of five people experienceback pain at some point in their lifetime. Back pain takesvarious forms, from a persistent dull ache tosudden sharp pain, and has many causes. Sometimes itresults from a sprain, fracture, or other accidental injury. It can stem from a disease or medical condition, such asherniated disc, arthritis, fibromyalgia,a narrowing of thespinal canal through which the spinal cord runs. However, many people develop back pain becausethey’re overweight or sedentary. However, even smallepisodes of back pain are the result of weakness in thecore muscles and usually lead to longer, more painfulepisodes in the future if you don’t take care of theunderlying problem. Here are a few tips that aresurprisingly effective at preventing back pain andkeeping it from returning1. Get more exercise. If

your back is hurting, youmay think the best wayto get relief is tolimit exercise and to rest.Studies show thatfrequent changes inposition and regularphysical activity canhelp ease inflammationand muscle tensionfaster in the back.

2. Maintain a healthy weight. Extra pounds, especiallyin your midsection, can make back pain worse byshifting your center of gravity and putting strain onyour lower back. Staying within 10 pounds of yourideal weight may help control back pain

3. Quit smoking. Nicotine in smoke, restricts the flowof nutrient-containing blood to spinal discs, sosmokers are especially vulnerable to back pain.

4. Sleeping position. Ifyou’re prone to backpain, talk with ourphysical therapists aboutthe best sleepingposition. What is mostimportant is to be in acomfortable positionthat you can sleep in toachieve the most rest.Sleeping on your side with your knees pulled upslightly toward your chest with a pillow between theknees is best during the first 15-30 minutes in bed.Prefer to sleep on your back? Put one pillow underyour knees and another under your lower back.Try to avoid sleeping on your front.

5. Improve your posture. Find a good chair to sit on.Avoid soft couches or chairs that put you in

a slouched position. Find a chair that will allow youto keep your feet flat on the floor when you sit. Withstanding, try to alternate your positions and walkaround if possible. Have one foot forward whenstanding and switch this every 10 minutes.

6. Watch how youlift. Don’t bend overfrom the waist to liftheavy objects. Bendyour knees and squat, pulling in your stomachmuscles and holding theobject close to yourbody as you standup. Don’t twist yourbody while lifting. If youcan, push rather thanpull heavy objects.

7. Use supportive shoes. Agood pair of shoes, withcushion can reducepressure on yourback. Avoid using highheels as they shift yourcenter of gravity andstrain your lower back.

8. Keep your wallet in yourfront pocket. Don’t putyour wallet in the backpocket of yourpants. Sitting on a walletshifts your balance whensitting causingdiscomfort and backpain.

9. Avoid heavy bags. If youuse a briefcase orhandbag, make sure youhave only what you needto lighten the load. Usea bag that can strap overthe opposite shoulder,so the weight is moreevenly distributed.

When carrying a heavy bag or case without straps, switchhands frequently to avoid putting all the stress on one sideof the body. There is a lot that you can do to prevent back pain and alleviatequickly when it starts. The important part is to work with yourphysical therapist to address the underlying cause of your backpain. This puts you on the right path to a healthy back thatwill support you pain free for a lifetime.
