This is a year to celebrate all things Canadian and we at the Festival of the Sound are proud to do it with music. In my travels throughout the world I have found that Canadian musicians have a wonderful reputation for being fine artists and sincere, honest human beings, giving truth to the line from one of Mary Lou Fallis’s shows, “A Canadian prima donna is a contradiction of terms.”

This summer the Festival honours some of the musical icons who have helped define who we are and where Canada stands in the world. We are also celebrating the local heroes who have made, and still make, such a difference to this beautiful part of Canada.

It is with pride that we are also looking to the future and are featuring many new compositions. I am particularly interested in the program called “Time Travel I: 21st Century Women”, being convinced these four featured composers will be among the voices that further define Canada’s place in the music world.

Many of you will remember that during the last two seasons we have been featuring works that you indicated were in your “Top Ten” chamber music favourites. There were so many pieces collected that there are some left over, so I have included them in this summer’s program. These can be found in the concerts listed in this brochure. If you can find all 11, please send them to our office by June 1st, and if you are right, we will give you a prize.

Much planning and preparation is continually being done by many dedicated people to mount what has become one of the biggest chamber music festivals in Canada and we all invite you to share in the joy of hearing this great music. Please join us and bring a friend!

Throughout this brochure, the Maple Leaf icon shown above will draw your eyes to outstanding Canadians. Some of them will be familiar faces and household names. Most but not all are members, past or present, of the thriving Canadian musical community. The Charles W. Stockey Centre grounds are now the home to a stunning bronze sculpture of Francis Pegahmagabow, the most decorated indigenous soldier in World War I and later chief of Wasauksing First Nation. In 2018, the Festival will premiere a new work in his honour by Timothy Corlis.

This visual staging of Scheherazade evokes fantasies with images of the east, a romantic dream world evoked by the French Romantic painters Delacroix and Ingres. Their highly atmospheric paintings partner the kaleidoscopic images that Rimsky-Korsakov portrays in his music. A chamber version of the suite with staging by Arthur Spirk.

A story told through dialogue and music with actors, a narrator and live classical music. On December 16, 1825 Theodor Molt became the sole Canadian musician to meet Ludwig van Beethoven, but what could have happened between

the two men? After Molt's florid greeting in one of Beethoven's notebooks, the next four pages were violently ripped out and destroyed. Betrayal? Competition? Scandal, or just old fashioned ego and pride? With music, drama, video, history and informed speculation The Missing Pages investigates. A premiere performance.

youth MusiC eduCAtion Fund

In the late winter of 2017, a group of Board members and supporters met for two days to brainstorm and plan for the next five years in the life of the Festival of the Sound. This takes the Festival beyond the highly visible summer concert series to look at ways to promote the love of music in the Parry Sound region and far beyond. Youth Music Education was identified as one of these ways.

In 2010, Fran Brown, a dedicated concert-goer from the Festival’s inception, made a generous donation to ensure that children would have the opportunities that she didn’t have to experience classical music at a young age. The Youth Music Education Fund was established to ensure the future of Music Scores, the Festival’s unique initiative to bring professional musicians to Parry Sound twice each year for visits to all the elementary schools in the region. All children in Grades 4 to 6 are then taken to a formal concert at the Stockey Centre.

In order to enhance the Festival’s support of emerging professional artists through the Stockey Young Artist initiative and to broaden Music Scores to reach younger students and bring coaching and master class sessions to high school students, the Festival of the Sound will be asking for your help to grow the funds in the Youth Music Education Fund.

A tax deductible donation will make you part of this exciting initiative.

Charles and Lois Stockey endowment Fund

Charles and Lois Stockey were supporters of and workers for the Festival of the Sound in its formative years before they moved to Victoria, BC. In 2002, what began with a casual question from Charles about what was happening now in Parry Sound led to a donation of $1.7 million to name the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. Now the Festival has a home, an intimate performance hall that has come to be ranked as one of the finest in the world for chamber music. During the 25th Anniversary Season in 2004, the Festival Board established the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund to honour our benefactors.

Charles Stockey died in September of 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lois lives in Victoria and maintains a keen interest in news from Parry Sound.

Contributions of any size are welcome and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
