All of the residue from my adventures would stick to the bottoms of my feet until they almost became one with the ground. I would come inside, and my grandmother would quickly call me to the bathroom so she could wipe my feet off with a warm washrag. I loved the feeling of the warm water against my feet, the texture of the washrag scratching away the grime of the day, and the hands of my grandmother lovingly squeezing my feet. When I was preparing to paint this image, I propped my phone up against a wall, started recording, and knelt down on the ground pretending I was washing Jesus’ feet. My face was close to the ground with all the dust and dog hair that clings to my rug and I began to run my fingers through my hair, washing an imaginary foot. My dog Rumi came over, plopped herself down in front of me, and I began to pretend wash her paws. I giggled to myself and called to my husband, asking if he’d lend his feet to the scene. I quickly said to him, “But please don’t take your shoes off.” I didn’t want to experience his feet that close to my face; after all it was winter and feet tend to be a little more ripe after a long day in wooly socks. I began to rub my hair over his booted feet and I felt this profound sense of vulnerability and discomfort. The image of me kneeling as my husband sat in a comfortable chair was a difficult one for me to see reflected back at me on my phone. I wasn’t even willing to fake wash my husband’s bare feet. The amount of love it took to do this act willingly seems astronomical to me. I then asked my husband to take his shoes off. As I rubbed my hair on his feet I felt like crying. This is the posture that Jesus calls all of us into; a profoundly uncomfortable, shockingly reverent position; coming face to face, intimately engaging with the residue of Christ’s footsteps to smell and almost taste the journey of Christ. — LAUREN WRIGHT PITTMAN © A SANCTIFIED ART Military Service Please keep these people in your prayers. THE ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

10:00 AM APRIL 7, 2019

THE FIRST NOTE OF THE PRELUDE begins our worship. Please use the prelude time to turn your attention to God’s

presence and help. Nurturing our relationships and friendships

in fellowship is essential to our life as a congregation, so please continue to do so following our time of worship.

Those who are able are invited to stand.

FOCUSING UPON GOD’S PRESENCE AND VOICE

PRELUDE “How Great Thou Art” MICHAEL HELMAN Adult Handbell Choir

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP FROM PSALM 126 Leader: When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,

People: we were like those who dream.

Leader: Then our mouth was filled with laughter and shouts of joy.

People: We rejoice: “The Lord has done great things for us.”

Leader: May those who go out weeping, bearing seed for sowing,

People: Come home with joy, carrying their sheaves.

OPENING PRAYER

HYMN #804 “Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart!” MARION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Leader: If we ask God to restore us to the way we have been, then

we have not asked for as much as God intends to give.

God is not simply to return or restore us to former things.

Instead, God seeks to give the gift of resurrection —

a new and abundant life. With confidence in God’s

generosity, we confess our sins and seek the new life

offered in Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (unison) God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation, you have united us with Christ, making us one with all your

people. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we

forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

POSTLUDE “Trumpet in Dialogue” L. CLERAMBAULT

People: Purifying God, we grow comfortable with the way things

are in our lives, in the church, and in the world. We do not

always welcome the new life you offer in Christ, for you

overturn our notions of power and protocol. Sure of our

own righteousness, we are critical of others. Wanting to

control our assets, we hoard the gifts you give us.

Forgive us, we pray, for seeking our gain at the expense

of others. Help us bend our lives toward your own life of

self-giving and sacrifice. Fill us, our homes and churches,

and the whole world with the abundant love of Christ until

we are all made new.

Leader: Lord, in your mercy,

People: hear our prayers.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

SHARING THE PEACE Leader: Since God has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another.

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us share our forgiven joy with one another.

HYMN OF ASSURANCE #581 GLORIA PATRI

One Great Hour of Sharing is one of four annual special offerings. The four churchwide Special Offerings of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) play an important role in defining what it means to be a connectional church in

the twenty-first century, bringing together the diversity of the PC (USA) to focus and take faith-based action on shared concerns. The Offerings offer opportunities for partnership, learning, and witness and profoundly affect the life of the church as a collective witness to Jesus Christ’s love for the whole church.

Mighty and Merciful god, in Jesus christ you opened the doors to us.

Make us a church whose doors open so that we go out to Join in Mission and Ministry with all our neighbors in need.

through the gifts we offer to one great hour of sharing, May your light break forth before us, and May we be called repairers of the breach, restorers of streets to live in.

(isaiah 58)

Open Doors, Open Hearts

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING (OGHS) reflects the call of Isaiah to become repairers of the breach, opening doors to become the church with all the people we see.

OGHS is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world — sharing God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief from natural disasters, food for the hungry, and support for the poor and oppressed.

Each gift helps to improve the lives of people in challenging situations through three impactful programs:

PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE : Works alongside communities as they

recover and find hope after the devastation of natural or human-caused disasters

PRESBYTERIAN HUNGER PROGRAM : Takes action to alleviate hunger and the systemic causes of poverty

so all may be fed

SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLE : Invests in communities responding to their experiences of racism,

oppression, poverty and injustice and educates Presbyterians about the impact of these societal ills

JOIN WITH PRESBYTERIANS WORLDWIDE IN

ANSWERING GOD’S CALL.

IF WE ALL DO A LITTLE, IT ADDS UP TO A LOT!

We open our doors to join those who were dependent on outsiders for food, those who now receive seeds and silos to sustain a future for their children and communities; to partner with those whose land and livelihoods are threatened and now receive legal aid and protection for the land that is rightfully theirs; and to work alongside those whose homes and loved ones have been lost to a catastrophic event, offering hands and resources to help rebuild — and prayers to help restore.

Let us open our doors — as well as our hearts — to share through this offering the love of Christ through ministries of justice, compassion, and joy.
