Covenant House Washington brought to the stage and celebrated 31 youth who entered college.

The Issue of Youth Experiencing Homelessness Each year more than 1,000 homeless, disconnected and exploited young people from DC, Virginia and Maryland, walk through the doors of Covenant House Washington (CHW). Each young person has their own unique set of obstacles that prevent them from obtaining stability. Some have stories we’ve unfortunately heard too often: “My parents kicked me out because they don’t support my change in identity” or “I aged out of foster care and have nowhere to go or anyone who loves me” or “When I turned 18 my parents said that it was time to go on my own.” Regardless of the reason, CHW opens its doors with welcoming arms and a loving heart. In a recent national study on sex trafficking, CHW found that 40 percent of all young people who enter its programs had been exposed to trafficking and 33 percent of those people were solicited during their very first night on the street. When asked why this happened, the majori-ty of them said they had no other options and lacked a caring adult in their life. CHW provides youth with care and attention, but most importantly with workforce readiness, career placement and post-secondary support so that youth won’t ever experience that state of vulnerability. A 23 Year History Covenant House Washington serves as the region’s largest and leading non-profit in transform-ing the lives of homeless, disconnected and exploited youth. Since 1995, CHW has opened its doors to more than 50,000 homeless, disconnected or exploited youth in the Greater Washington, DC region. The solutions Covenant House Washington creates for youth go beyond short-term housing and support. CHW’s wrap-around approach gives young people the opportunity to become self-sustaining adults and active members in our communities. Last year, CHW served more than 70,000 meals, provided safe housing for 225 youth, placed youth in 156 jobs and enrolled 31 homeless and disconnected youth into college through its supportive wrap-around services. Mission-Driven Covenant House Washington’s success model is based on a continuum-of-care commitment that supports youth with wrap-around services.

“We provide support to our youth at every angle, which goes far beyond just a place to sleep,” says Dr. Madye Henson, CEO of Covenant House Washington.
