StatementofInterdisciplinarityWhentheMA/MFAPrograminInterdisciplinaryStudieswasfirstcreatedintheMAPFaculty(thenFineArts),therewasanunderstandingthattheterm“Interdisciplinary”meanttobringtogethertwoorthreediscretedisciplinaryareasofresearchtocreateauniqueobjectofstudy.However,giventhemanyresearcherswhonowengageininterdisciplinaryresearchtheboundariesbetweendisciplineshaveblurred,givingthetermnewandnuancedmeaningsthatinvolvesablendingofmethodsandtheoreticalframes.NolongerisitnecessarytoidentifyseparatedisciplineswhenengaginginInterdiscipinaryresearch.Forexample,itispossibletoenterintoanISMFAwithathematictopicrelatedtosocialandcommunityengagement,whereknowledge,methods,andtheoryfromImprovisationalStudies,community-basedresearch,andPerformanceStudiescoalesce,yetthesupervisorsmaybesituatedinMAPandTheatre.Structurally,studentswillidentifytwoormoremainconcentrationareas,linkedtotheirprojectandtheirsupervisors’expertise,andappropriatecourseswillbeidentifiedfrombothareas.

AdministrationofProgramOrganizationalStructureStudentsinInterdisciplinaryStudies(IS)inMAPprogramsareadministeredexclusivelythroughthepoliciesofISprogramsandtheUniversityofRegina.Student:

GraduateprogramsinInterdisciplinaryStudiesincludeastudies-basedMasterofArts(MA)andapractice-basedMasterofFineArts(MFA).Inbothcases,studentsarerequiredtocompletethesesorprojectsthatintegrateknowledgefromtwo(orthree)disciplinesorthematicareas,oneofwhichmustbeaMAParea(i.e.InterdisciplinaryStudies,CreativeTechnologies,Film,Music,Theatre,VisualArts).
Itisthephilosophyofourprogramthattraditionalskillsandspecializationsareusefullyaugmentedandcontextualizedbyaperspectiveandacross-disciplinaryapproach.Associetymovestowardsinformation/knowledgeeconomies,culturalandentertainmentsectorsarerapidlyemergingasdrivingforcesinchange.Inthisenvironment,thereisan

opportunitytoexpandtheroleofthefineartsbeyondtraditionaldisciplinaryboundaries.ThegraduateprogramsinInterdisciplinaryStudiesinMAParedesignedtoaccommodatestudentswhoaremotivatedtopursueinnovativeprojectsinarigorousintellectualenvironmentthatissupportedbyaflexibleframeworkofcourseworkandanexpansivenetworkofresearchlinkstotheuniversitycommunity.
MAProgramDescriptionTheMAprogramisdesignedtoaccommodatestudentswhoaremotivatedtopursueinnovativeprojectsinarigorousintellectualenvironmentsupportedbyaflexibleframeworkofcourseworkandanexpansivenetworkofresearchlinkstotheuniversitycommunity.TheprogramprovidesanopportunitytoexpandtheroleoftheArtstoincludeafocusonsuchareasastechnologyandscience;socialhistory;pedagogy,andidentity.Fivesuggestedthematicareasofconcentrationlistedbelowsuggestpotentialpathwaysbutarenotmeanttoextinguishproposed,individualizedandinterdisciplinaryresearchtopics.ThisMAprogramencouragesstudentstoconsiderinnovativeresearchquestionsthatinvestigatenewterrainbeyondthetraditionaldisciplinaryboundariescombiningtheoreticalandmethodologicalframes.Theprogramisdesignedforcompletionwithinonecalendaryear,thistimeframemayalsoassiststudentswhowanttomoveontodoctoral-levelstudies.TherecommendedlengthforMAthesesinInterdisciplinaryStudiesinFineArtsis60-80pages.DescriptionofOptionalThematicConcentrationAreas:Studentsmayconsideroneofthesepossibleconcentrationareas,althoughtheseareoptional:

StatementofOriginality-MastersOfFineArts(MFA)(Forstudents,supervisorsandexaminers):AMFAisaterminaldegree.Itwillprovidethetrainingforartistsandcreativeresearcherstomovedirectlyintoprofessionalworkinartisticandacademiccontexts.AtaMFAlevel,theprojectmustbeanoriginalcontributiontotherelevantartisticandinterdisciplinaryfields.Theprojectandsupportpapermustdemonstratecarefulresearchdesignandwellarticulatedmethodsandmethodologiesappropriatetothedisciplinesinvolved,andtotheinterdisciplinaryapproachtaken,andshowskillsandtechniquesatalevelappropriatetoadvancedcontributiontothefield(s).Thesupportpapermustdemonstrateandsupportthisoriginalresearchcontribution,andjustifythereadinessofthecreativeworktomovetoexaminationanddefense.

CoursesPlanningisthekeytosuccessfulstudyintheInterdisciplinaryStudiesgraduateprograms.StudentswillmeetwiththecoordinatorofInterdisciplinaryStudiestodevelopanddesigntheirprogramsofstudybeforeofficiallyenteringtheirfirsttermtoprovideanoverviewofplansandgoals.Thisshouldbedoneinconsultationwithco-supervisorswhowillplayamajorroleinprogramdesignandimplementation.TheGraduateProgramCoordinatorwillmeetwithstudentsintheweekspriortotermcommencementtoassistwiththisprocessandisavailabletorespondtoquestionsorissuesastheyarise.StudentsinInterdisciplinaryStudiesinFineArtsprogramsareexpectedtoberegisteredasafulltimestudentineverytermoftheacademicyear.ThecorecoursesthatanchorInterdisciplinaryStudiesinFineArtsprogramsareFA800andFA803.Thesearetypicallyofferedinfall,wintertermsrespectively.Coreseminarswillbetakeninthefirstthreesemestersofstudybyallfull-timestudents.Part-timestudentswilltakecoreseminarsintheirfirstsixsemestersofstudy.ApartfromtheFA800/803corecourses,studentsareexpectedtoregisterinregularlyscheduledgraduatecoursesinthesemesterstheyareofferedtofulfiltheirrequirements.ForstudentsenrolledintheMFAprogramoption,twoadditionalrequiredcoursesforyourprogramareregularlyscheduledanditisexpectedthatyouwillcompletethosecoursesinthefirsttwoyearsofyourprogram.EitherofthesecourseswouldalsoserveaselectiveoptionsforstudentsintheMAprogram.InFalltermFA804isofferedbyaFineArtsfacultymemberonatopicrelatedtotheirresearchwithbroadapplications(offeredonarotatingbasis).InWintertermFILM804isofferedbyaFilmDepartmentfacultymemberonatopicrelatedtotheirresearchwithbroadapplications(onarotatingbasis). StudioAccommodation
